'A modest Proposal" By Jonathan Swift

A modest proposal written by Johnathan's Swift in 1729 begins by deploring the sad fate of the poverty-stricken Irish, who have to spend there days trying to feed their large expanding families. As a solution to poverty, in which these families are forced to live by virtue, having so many mouths to feed. Swift suggests that these poor Irish families should fatten up their children, and sell them to the rich English landowners. He argues that children could be sold into a meat market, as early as the age of 1. Giving poor families some much-needed income, while sparing them the expenses of raising so many children. With 100,000 Irish children out of the population being set aside from dinner, his solution he reasons will also help to resolve the issues of overpopulation and unemployment in Ireland, giving the Irish economy a much-needed boost, while making it easier for England to deal with its unruly Irish subjects. Swift then goes on to offer statistical support for his proposal, and specific data and about the number of children that are to be sold. There weight and price, and the projected eating patterns of there consumers. He even suggests certain receipts for preparing this delicious new meat. Generating ever more and delicious new dishes. It will expand and improve the culinary experience of the wealthy, resulting in a healthier and happier population as a whole. A modest proposal ends with the argument, that the practice of selling and eating children, will have positive effects on Irish family morality.

Malcolm Gladwell’s Revisionist History podcast “The Satire Paradox”

Every week Malcolm Gladwell revisits the forgotten and misunderstood. This weeks episode, he talks about satire, political satire for that matter. Gladwell believes that we live in the golden age of satire, where it's almost to the point where we seem to conduct as much of our political conversation through humor as through the normal media. Stephen Colbert at the 2006 white house correspondents dinner, in character as the conservative talk show host. He was then playing on the television, he stands up and gives a satirical toast to his quote-unquote hero president, George W Bush. "I stand by this man, I stand by this man because he stands for things, not only for things, he stands on things. Things like aircraft carriers, and rubble, and recently flooded city squares. And that sends a strong message that no matter what happens to America, she will always rebind, with the most powerfully staged photo ops in the world." All the while, President Bush was sitting very unhappily on the rails just a few feet away from Colbert. Squirming and grimacing and looking rather convincing like he'd rather be a hundred feet underground. It was a moment of comic genius.

The Handmaids tail is an effective use of social and political satire. Atwood draws her readers attention towards several actions throughout the story, such as unpleasant, brutal and horrific events in the recent past and in contemporary society. Another can be social trends. During her novel, she draws on many examples of régimes which have their echoes in Gilead. The rapid change into extraordinary brutality from an apparently civilized society. For example, the massacre at Srebrenica of Bosnian Muslims by Serbs in the former Yugoslavia in 1995 - shows Atwood's awareness of how easily our way of life could at any time be horrifically transformed.

I decided to choose this show because it covers the major issue of racism and prejudice in a humorous, enlightening way. I believe the author wants to show how sometimes certain activities designed to deal with prejudice, like the one in like the clip above, can actually cause more problems then they solve.

Gladwell's meaning of "satire paradox"

I believe that when abusing humor it can destroy the true purpose of satire. With this being said, I understand that the Handmaid's Tail does avoid Gladwell's paradox because of Margret Atwood leaning in the wrong direction from the true humor and so far, I have yet to acknowledge this use of paradox due to the poor output of humor Atwood writes. An example is that the Handmaids must do what the commanders mandate, and they don't have the freedom and exposure to the real world which is taught through conformity.

An issue that's important to me!

A political issue that is important to me which can be satirized to make a change is how people believe global warming isn't so bad. Statistically, global warming is a serious matter that is occurring across the world and has an effect on the oceans. Ongoing effects include rising sea levels due to thermal expansion and the melting of glaciers and ice sheets. Climate change is a major issue facing the world today, but some people believe that climate change is a hoax. This term refers to the changes in temperatures and climates experienced by people living in countries all around the world. Even some famous people believe that this is an example of fake science, and others believe that it exists but not to the degree that some say. Those who deny it exists have a few key reasons for their belief.
Climate change isn’t something you’d consider, well, funny. But every now and again, a little gallows humor may come in handy, and may even lead to improved communications and public understanding. Comedians and talk show hosts satirize climate change to represent foolishness and corruption of a society by using humor, irony, exaggeration or ridicule. It intends to improve humanity by criticizing its follies and foibles.
