         <description><![CDATA[<div>Students have been practicing Point of View in Reading.  In class, we watched a short video on Hurricane Katrina (DiscoveryEd website) and students made connections between the event and themselves.  They jotted down notes/facts/interesting details from the storm onto dots and drew lines when that information made a personal connection to them.  <br>Then we read "Remembering Hurricane Katrina" in our Reading/Writing Workshop book.  We skipped sharing our Connect the Dots papers because of time.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>We concluded our study of habitats by reading our class book we made about habitats around school.  After reading the story of The Three Little Pigs, groups of four had to make a house out of popsicle sticks and masking tape.  Each group was given 50 sticks and a roll of tape.  After the structures were made we tested their strength by having a fan (the big bad wolf) blow on them. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Little Engineers</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Students learned about the engineering process and how engineers determine a problem, design a solution and then build prototypes.  The problem they had was the gingerbread man needed to get across the river.  With toothpicks and marshmallows as their supplies they needed to build a bridge to get across.  Students researched about different types of bridges and then designed it and sketched it out.  After that was done they started building their prototype. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Second graders have been learning and practicing the reading comprehension skill "Main Idea and Key Details." In class, we listened to the short close read story "Tornados" in our Wonders Reading/Writing Workshop book. Then we went through the story a second time and made some personal connections. I modeled mine under the document camera and the kids wrote their's in their reading journals. We wrote "Tornados" in the middle of the paper and our names at the top. I modeled writing some facts and info from the story then connecting the dots when there was a personal connection. Students did the same thing. When we finished students worked with a turn and talk partner to share.  </div>]]></description>

After exploring different seeds, we planted flowers and grass seeds in STEM. We looked at the different parts of a plant and their jobs. We decided to incorporate "butterflies" and their life cycle into this Unit. We have been keeping a journal and recording our observations. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>After finding and plotting data where Solar Ovens work best, students began to plan, discuss, and build their solar oven prototype.  Since this was in the middle of winter, we had to wait to see real results. Students have tested these during recess (even in the snow). It was amazing to see how warm these prototypes actually got when it warmed up. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Mrs. Morgan had created a powerpoint to help focus on the essentials in this concept. We were lucky to have a student whose parent is a Fisheries Biologist. This parent came to school with a co-worker to discuss and teach the students about their job of a Fisheries Biologist, what they do, and taught the students how to recognize different fish, whether they are meat eaters or something else, prey or predators, and distinctive characteristics of each fish. They also discussed how they took what they loved to do growing up, and made it into a career where they actually get paid for it : ) </div>]]></description>
