El Anatsui created a new installation for the Tate Modern's lobby - After the Red Moon, which featured three installations that were stunning from both a distance and up close. Looking closely at the entire large net undulating on the ground like waves shimmering on the ground, the artist spliced and stitched together thousands of discarded bottle caps and metal wires to create these shimmering, flowing tapestries. As the first inspirational research for the major project, what I gained from this is that true artwork is not limited to the materials used to make it, so I would like to challenge myself to use different mediums in the design process or in the process to test and produce the final project.

This was my first attempt at gelli print, which is a relatively simple operation of cutting out the desired shape and then applying the desired paint to the gelli plate and finally topstitching it. This time I printed out my first illustration and then used a knife to carve some details of the features. I thought it would be easy so I chose the smallest offset plate I could find to try it out, and at the same time I had some wire to make some texture patterns with.

I wanted to visualise the cravings, I found that whenever I wanted to eat more sugar to relieve stress I would first have a series of thought struggles, this was the brain's reasoning fighting against the cravings and the process was difficult so I drew some illustrations using bright oranges as well as bright yellow colours, I illustrated the human body through human expressions and movements. I use bright orange and yellow colours to illustrate how cravings are manifested in the human body through human expressions and movements. The key words are: restlessness, excitement, irritability.

These are my final results, I did the topography through two materials, one was a paper cutout and the other was a random arrangement of wire, as this was my first attempt at gelli print. I was confident at first because I thought I had thoroughly figured out how to use gelli print, but I was less than satisfied with the end result. Firstly, I didn't spread the paint out on the table, which resulted in too much paint and unevenness on the board, secondly, I chose a top sheet that was too hard to fit perfectly on the board, and lastly, I didn't choose enough shapes to make it obvious that some of the small details that I had sculpted would be difficult to show up on the small board. Although this experiment was a bit of a failure, I like this way of doing some experiments, and in the later stages of practice I may go to the printing studio to try to make some gelli prints again.

I printed out my initial drawings and brought them to my school's studio lab class to experiment with the materials. The first thing I tried was to reproduce the painting on topiar paper. The teacher taught us how to topiar the shapes we wanted onto the paper underneath without smudging the image, firstly we had to fix the printed paper and then stick it onto the topiar paper. The experiment was simple and fun, but I thought the desires might be blurred, so instead of limiting the image to just the centre, I ended up topstitching different angles of the face 4 or 5 times on the same piece of paper. I'm happy with the final result because I think that's what happens when I can't control my desires, people are multi-faceted and the cluttered image just expresses the multi-faceted person.

The two images above are also my experiments inspired by researching some artists. I got some inspiration by reorganising the photos. After I had decided on the theme I drew a storyboard that was also humorous about sweet addiction. A pop gun looks colourful and harmless, it looks ordinary, but when this gun goes into the hands of a sweet addiction it's like committing suicide, in fact quitting sugar is one of the things that people need to do proactively because fighting sugar slows down aging in humans and reduces the chances of heart disease, sugar causes inflammation so I always get acne so I actually wanted to be humorous to bring attention to the fact that sugar is this thing is everywhere in our lives.So I'm planning a late final outcome might want to do a zine or pamphlet to tell a short story and is leaning towards being subtle about the consequences of sweet addiction. In the meantime I should keep the role of the girl because it's like telling my own story.

I am currently researching the emotional ups and downs of the whole process of human addiction, first very irritable then pleasurable after getting and finally left with emptiness. These three paintings are a series, and the emotion I want to express in this series is the emptiness part, when people reach a certain point of excitement, they will fall down rapidly, so they will feel an unprecedented emptiness, and this emptiness is the beginning of addiction. So I use black, red and blue to express the emotion, i.e. there is the residual emotion of the euphoria but more black emptiness.

I went to this cute exhibition mainly for the Hello Kitty 50 years exhibition as I am a fan of Hello Kitty. But this cut exhibition is not just about Hello Kitty it also includes a lot of Japanese vintage items such as American Girl Soldiers and some local Japanese cute comics. But this exhibition gave me the feeling that it was weird in a cute way, there were a lot of illustrations in bright colours but when you look at the details in the pictures, there were some mutated creatures and some black holes, which would make people feel shivering. But this happens to be the feeling that I like, and I wanted to incorporate this feeling into the process of the output of my work, as my subject matter deals with desire and addiction.

I started by designing a small graphic intended to be felted in wool, as the eyes and mouth represent desire in a certain sense so I designed a quirky style. This was my first attempt at felting something and I found it very difficult to tie into a specific shape as I had anticipated, I needed to adjust the shape and size in advance and then layer the wool on top of each other layer by layer and then start to make the details in different colours, felting is very time consuming combining different colours of wool together and eventually I needed to trim the edges to make them look more I also had to trim the edges to make it look a bit more neat and tidy.

At the same time I visited other galleries at Tate Modern for filming and on-site sketching, my main tool for this sketching was acrylic markers as I was obsessed with composing illustrations with bright coloured markers at the same time, this material made the illustrations interesting and I was able to overlay some saturated colours with abandon, which I enjoyed the process of doing. So I mainly chose to work with geometric shapes, I tried to understand the flatness of these shapes, because the different depths of the colours make the picture three-dimensional, and I wanted to learn about this kind of shapes and the use of colour blocks.

In the reflection stage I showed my classmates the research so far and what my topic was about, in which I had basically decided that my topic had to do with greedy dopamine and that I would be researching specifically about sweet addiction and drawing a storyboard to express my ideas. At this stage I'm still stuck on the re-shadowing because I want to visualise how addicted people feel at different stages of their addiction, so that people can face their desires more clearly because everyone has desires whether they are good or bad they are a part of the emotions that make up a person's being. Including myself, I have never really looked at my desires directly, so I want to face my desires directly through the final project. So what I need to do at this stage is to sort out what the specific parts of the research I want to do are, and I can also start asking friends for their opinions on whether anyone else is suffering from the same sugar-controlled cravings as me. I think this thread is going to get more and more interesting. I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who are plagued by this problem.

Due to the theme of this project I wanted to visualise desire by looking at myself, so I targeted my main research on sweet addiction, so I wrote some keywords, girl, candy, candy house, candy gun, addiction, eyes. These elements were the main elements of my initial collection of ideas that I wanted to start with and then begin to develop the whole project. Maybe the end result will be a series of images or maybe a booklet that tells the viewer what I want to say through storytelling, so I'm aiming to think through different perspectives at the moment. Most of the food in the world contains sugar so it's easy to get addicted to sweetness, for example some people like to eat and when their blood sugar rises they get sleepy which makes them sleep well and eat satisfactorily but it's actually not good for the human body, so I'll probably be looking at how much sugar is in different foods or I'll go into researching sugar on the market as I have a lot of time left to work on this and then I'll look at it from all angles. Think about it.

I printed off my favourite images and then split them up to make some collages. I first tried to sketch some of El's installations to find the shadows and cut out some of my favourite parts of some of the photographs into geometrical shapes for back-up, and then cut out the human body from Julia's paintings, I tried to make a collage of both artists' work even though they have their own individual characteristics. I tried to make a collage of both artists' work although they both have their own characteristics. I tried to use these geometrical shapes to cover the human face and then overlap them in a way to form an image, which I hoped would have an undulating effect. This collage is also a way of expressing my confusion about the project and the exploratory stage of the project, which seems to be a void, but in fact, I am gradually making use of some fragments of ideas to form a complete story line.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter secreted by the brain and is used to help cells transmit impulses of chemicals. This brain endocrine is mainly responsible for the brain's eroticism, sensations and transmits excitement and happy messages to the human brain, so this is also associated with addiction.

Dopamine can be very good for maintaining human mood, but people may not be able to control themselves, thus abusing the pleasure brought by dopamine, leading to addiction.

double vision

1. Self-exploration: I may look to myself for things that used to be addictive to me, such as getting in a good mood through the fact that I used to relieve stress by eating a lot of sweets, or playing games all the time or even forgetting to take a break.

2. Desire visualisation: exploring desires under different social stages from the macro aspect and analysing individual desires from the micro aspect as a reflection of social or other issues.

Purpose：To warn people that dopamine can’t be abused.

Methodology：Illustration and modelling

I'm interested in illustration as well as modelling, so I'd probably do a booklet and then think about combining it with modelling to show my ideas.

Audience：My target audience is likely to be people who have the same inability to control their addiction to overdose on their own “dopamine".

I'm honestly happy with the end result, but I didn't purchase a protective bag ahead of time which resulted in the sand wearing off the surface when I brought it to my new school, and it was difficult for the teacher and classmates to hold it in their hands for observation. At the same time, the teacher felt that I could have added a scent to the surface of the sand or wrapped it in something similar to sugar paper, which would have increased the interactivity between the work and the audience and allowed for a more immersive appreciation of the work. I think the idea is good but it is difficult for me to implement it, I didn't find any spray on the market to add scent except perfume, some perfume is sweeter may be a little bit like candy feeling. I will think about adding these mediums at a later stage, after all, it's just an experimental stage right now. About this drawing I think my control of the carving knife is rather lacking, I can easily shake my hand which leads to some details of the graphic will be different from the picture, this is something I need to fix, also the perspective of the swamp on the ground has some problems, I hope to improve it in the later stage, for the colour scheme my friend thinks that black doesn't quite fit with the theme of dopamine because the dopamine she has in her mind is coloured and won't be there with darker colours but I think that a proper amount of black is able to express darkness and I'm not just making a beautiful side of the world as my idea is more on the side of the more darker worlds so I think that it can be moderately used with some blacks.

I'm still very happy with the final etching and printing results, I probably prefer the zinc effect to the steel effect, or maybe it's because the corrosion time on the steel wasn't long enough to make the pattern lighter, but I'm still very happy with the attempt. For me the hardest part of printing is trying to adjust the paper and the copper plate to make it right, because I still get skewed even after trying to adjust it, so I will communicate with my teacher before printing in the future to see if there is a good way to solve this problem. When comparing etching and gelli print, etching is more suitable for mass production because the copper plate can be reused again and again.

I found a shop in China with the right material, I bought about 20 colours because the sand they sell is very fine and has a shiny surface attached to it, then I bought three different sizes of adhesive backing boards, which are thicker than the normal ones they sell so they are better for displaying. I haven't used similar tools and materials before this, and there are no similar tutorials online so I'm going to make some small ones to try the feasibility of this approach.

My plan is to do 8 pages of illustrations and then print the zine in riso, on the one hand the way the riso is printed will make the images have a bit of a staggered and overlapping feel to them, which is in line with the effect I'm going for, but that's just my initial idea and I may change it at a later stage. What I planned was a girl falling into her dream world and coming to a weird world full of teeth as buildings that she's trapped in, then she randomly enters a building and finds a cake full of teeth as well as an apple core as the core of a carousel, and the seats are made out of teeth, and on the back cover is a bunch of cavities saying hello to the girl. More than anything, I'd like to urge people not to harm their bodies by over-abusing dopamine for the sake of momentary pleasure, and sweet addiction is just one of those things. I started by drawing a specific version of the story then began meticulously illustrating each page.

This is my final overall zine design, I changed some graphics and colours to tweak the overall picture but the teacher and classmates showed confusion about pages 4-5 as well as not knowing exactly what my story was about, and these were the only two pages where I used a pink background so it would look out of place in the whole zine which gave me a headache. Admittedly my inspiration dried up after page 3 of the illustration design so I wasn't very happy with the graphics that came out, but I still have a month to revise after this check point and I'm sure I can adjust myself and rework the whole zine design as well as organise the story line and not just limit it to an 8 page zine.I may add more later on! I may increase the number of pages later to complete the integrity of the story.

Marcel Duchamp is a French-American painter, sculptor, chess player and writer. Toussaint believed that an object should be created in its own stylistic character, not as a ‘picture’ of another object. Upon closer inspection, the nude woman descending the stairs is made up of a pile of geometrically shaped pieces of broken wood that fill most of the space of the picture, to represent the succession of geometries of the head, arms, pelvis, and legs, as he extracts a number of frames to create a tense sense of movement. In this work, he uses abstract lines and shapes to combine the images and further reacts to the movements, complexes and columns of the subject's nude female body walking down the stairs through the image. I really like this feeling of urgency and I think this can be applied to desire, similar to a drug addict who starts to become delirious when prompted by jealousy and desire this is the feeling I wanted, so I also wanted to create this feeling by altering the images to reorganise them.

Julia Soboleva is an artist I have long admired as a mixed media artist, her process involves painting and collaging over found photographic images, the work meditates on themes of madness and reality as well as constructing something mysterious with unsettling overtones and absurd humour, which is a style I love. In Julia's world, bird-headed creatures roam menacingly around and ghostly figures perform strange rituals in images that are both disturbing and impossible to look away from. I have always tried to interpret Julia's paintings before I read the blurb, I try to understand them from my own point of view, these images may make me think of depression or some special people living amongst us, but very few of us will ever find out about them. I intend to make a collage of her paintings with my own photographs of El's work.

I went through my chosen keywords, desire and dessert for the moodboard, I searched for some images of my interpretation of these two words to use as inspiration, I think that human desires are sometimes uncontrollable, and when people's desires flare up it's extremely contradictory, and there's a feeling of wanting to be in control of yourself in the midst of being out of control, so I think that this part was hard to define. At the same time I looked for paintings and realistic photographs of desserts, the colours just looked very vibrant and fitting to the theme of dopamine, there was a sense of fantasy as well as impracticality, and these inspired me to start thinking about different tools to develop this project. For example, some tools that look hard but are actually soft, felt art.

I made a mood board mainly based on extracting weird scenes, so I looked for some photos of paradise and some bright colours to give me inspiration. From these I extracted some main keywords that I could later apply to the picture making. Mazes, escape exits, overlapping staircases, checkerboard floors. I felt that these elements could be added to my illustration to suggest that I was making a weird world of candy teeth. My classmates suggested that I could try to use black areas sparingly as it might be more relevant to the word ‘dopamine’, as people always think of bright colours when they think of dopamine.

I started to think about using different materials to develop my work and I found that there is a type of candy that has a granulated sugar attached to the surface, I like to eat this type of candy because usually the granulated sugar on the outside of this type of candy is acidic to balance out the sweetness of the candy. I initially wanted to paint with sweets but a lot of the sweets were very large which resulted in very little detail that I was able to create, so I thought it would be feasible to paint with coloured white sugar. However, for various reasons, this idea was difficult to realise as it can easily melt due to weather or improper storage. In the end, I thought of a material that could be used instead of sugar and would not melt easily, and that was sand. Sand is finer than sugar so it is more feasible, and I started searching for the material on the internet.

Dopamine fives pleasure,and the brain releases large ammounts of dopamine when people do something enjoynable. people feel good and seek more of the feeling. Maria is a fashion designer turned felting artist, these are some of her paintings made with wool felt, I was attracted by the soft and strong images, I was curious how she combined these soft wools into a painting, so I took a closer look at some of her felted wool paintings, in which she was different from other artists in that the borders of the images were blurred, and the work needed to be placed in a far away place to be able to be seen. Her paintings have a dreamy, soft and unreal feel to them, so I wanted to try to make something with this method. In my mind, wool felt is not as easy as painting a picture, so I want to try this way, this material is new to me so I need to buy the material and learn how to use it easily.

I found a wool felting introductory video on Youtube, in which the author tells the basic use of the tool and how to poke the wool into a ball, in which the different thicknesses of the needles for poking the wool are used for different purposes, the thin needles are for adjusting the details while the thick needles are more suitable for poking a specific shape, which doesn't look very difficult but seems to be very time-consuming, so I bought a small set of the material intending to make an attempt. I'm looking forward to being able to make my own graphic designs in felted wool. I will begin the wool felting exercise by designing a simple graphic.

I followed it up with a wool felt about desire, this time with a design about apples and eyes as the main elements. In Christianity the apple represents desire and the serpent represents the devil tempting Adam and Eve to eat the apple, so I used the apple as the base and then converted the apple core into an eye instead, because addictive desires are evil rather than desires when competing normally so I'll be doing it a little more on the evil side. But the main problem is that it's time consuming and not very big. I wanted to make a painting with wool felt for a while, but with the limited space and materials and the time consuming nature of it, I couldn't put all my energy into it, but experimenting with it as a material still gave me a lot of ideas and inspiration.

I purchased a whole starter set of wool felting tools and I started to make something to correspond to my theme, first I thought of sweets so I started by first pinning out the long strip in the middle of the sweets, to be honest this step alone took most of my time as wool is always fluffy so if I wanted to make it into a shape and hold it in place I needed to pin the wool together. As I got better at it I got faster, so I made some more candies, and in the meantime I made two cavities. But as I got better at it I was going faster and faster which made it easy to get my hands stuck even though I was wearing gloves, so I had to slow down a bit to make sure I was safe as the needles were very sharp and could easily get stuck in my hands.

I took the advice given to me by my teacher and set the girl in this weird candy world full of teeth as buildings so that the viewer would know where the girl was at the same time adding richness to the picture. Above is my draft, I started to think about how to make the image fuller, and on the left side is the process I did to articulate how the girl fell into the weird world. I designed the girl to be trapped in a labyrinth looking for an exit, but the exit she finds is not a doorway back to the real world, but a passageway to the weird world. But the labyrinth on the left has a perspective problem as well as an angle problem, it's just a rough draft I'll redraw a labyrinth at a later stage. But I didn't want to add fonts to the illustrations because I didn't want to make it clear what I was trying to say, I wanted the viewer to understand what I was able to say through my illustrations.

I started out with a plan to do a booklet incorporating sand drawings, but the main material was more specific and I wasn't able to do a good blend, so I planned to do it in two ways that would become my Final Outcome. A series of sand drawings and a zine that told a story. so I started to write the story line as I plan to develop a short story with the girl as the main character to echo my theme. By analysing this with my classmates and teacher, I felt it was necessary to reorganise the story line, and I liked the idea of writing down some ideas and drawing some sketches to help me clear my mind. At first I was thinking of doing a zine but a normal zine can only accept 8 pages of illustrations, this idea confined me so I started to increase the number of pages of illustrations and a booklet was possible. So I started to add the story line as well as the teacher suggested me to add the main character to the picture, which inspired me a little bit, so that the audience can have a clearer idea of where the girl is in the world and how she interacts with the world. So I started to implement these as well as some of my classmates suggested that I could also make it better for the audience by adding text as well. These suggestions were noted down for my reference. So I started to think about using some similar patterns flat for the cover, and since some of the ideas came from testing, I would start to present my strange ideas as paintings. I'm planning on 12 pages as a base, and if there aren't enough pages you can stack them in multiples of 2.

I like this kind of vague feeling, so I want to try to draw some illustrations with this kind of feeling. I am satisfied with the output of this stage because I tried many different ways to express myself this time including finding my favourite way to present the illustration at the end. I used to like to draw things on paper, but this time I am completely in love with the printing studio, and experimenting with different materials helps me to open up my mind instead of being confined to the theme. These sand drawings are the main works that I brought to the check point to share with my classmates, in which I made some attempts to not connect the story, so I want to create more illustrations in the later stage to attract the audience's attention.

In this check point, I met a student from Hong Kong. At first, I didn't tell her my theme and let her make a guess, which was generally correct but still a bit off-topic. When I explained the theme to her, it dawned on her that she understood it, and she gave me a suggestion that I should put a layer of bag on my sand painting to protect the sand on the surface, because long time touching will cause the sand on the surface to fall off and ruin the picture. start to fall off and ruin the picture, and she also liked my painting. For this check point I brought my selected sand art and zine designs. I was apprehensive at first because I was afraid that no one would like my theme and style, but when I got back to my seat I realised that I had received a lot of messages from my classmates, and I read each and every one of them very carefully. Many students said they wanted to buy and get my sand art work, which surprised me and made me happy that my work could be liked by my classmates. This gave me great encouragement as I reached a plateau that caused me to not be able to come up with more good ideas and thoughts. The encouragement and advice from my classmates gave me great confidence to work hard in the last month to revise and submit my final outcome.

Dopamine is the key to human pleasure and allows people to live a life of pleasure, but when people want to overdose on dopamine this can lead to addiction. There are many aspects of addiction such as gaming, overeating, alcohol, etc. These forms of entertainment can be very enriching but when they are overused they can have negative effects. From my own point of view, when I feel anxious or unhappy, I start to eat all kinds of sweets, the rapid rise and fall of blood sugar brings me great pleasure but at the same time accompanied by fat and tooth decay. So I want to use this project to tell people not to abuse dopamine to seek it.
