Assistive Technology is an accommodation or modification that have been needed for many students with disabilities to learn and become functioning members of society. Assistive technology is any object or system that increases or maintains the capabilities of people with disabilities. This can be as simple as a hand rail to complicated as a lightweight, high-performance mobility device that enable people with disabilities to play sports and be physically active. All of these improve the life of the student using it. I am welcoming and accepting of all assistive technology as long as it improves the life of the student using it.

My thoughts are I believe it improves and helps these individuals to becoming more independent and successful.I love the main AT and alternative apps they have made for multiple individuals with a disability. Answer your second question it was not a requirement and I do believe its because students with disabilities were discriminated. Most people did not see potential in these kids

I appreciate all of the new and old AT devices that support students in the classroom. In particular, the iPad has been a useful communication and learning tool for students with autism. Speech communication apps, for example, provide easy to access activities that tend to be highly engaging.
As far as the legal system, I think that considering that special education laws have been in effect for less than 50 years, we're in a good place with AT laws.
-Ruth Ann Byerly

AT is making more advancement and aiding students with disabilities to optimize their learning. AT was clearly defined and its consideration in schools was first made in IDEA 1997. Technology started evolving in the 20th century. At that time it was more expensive, difficult to access, and designed big and cumbersome. Thus, technology was not how it is today, with even small children carrying high-tech phones with them all the time. Thus, it would have been more difficult to bring AT is schools prior to 1997, especially keeping in mind the hurdle of funding. Also, when technology became popular it made advancements into different sectors sequentially with hospital and medical systems leading and schools following much later.

I feel the legal system has recognized the benefits of AT and has continued to redefine the laws as needed in order to keep in pace with technology. Keeping in mind that many forms of AT are dependent on the private sector's development of the necessary technology, it is fairly easy to recognize that the timelines of AT availability and computer advancements correspond with each other. The legal system does not provide the technology, it provides for the technology to be made available to students with disabilities. The requirements were likely put in place to insure that cost was not the deciding factor in decision making -- low-tech AT is not nearly as costly as some of the recent advancements using high-tech.

I think the new arrivals of AT are absolutely phenomenal and very much needed. The use of AT has opened so many doors for students who truly needed it. I also think that the legal system has done a pretty good job of continuously making amendments to the laws in order to keep up with the changing world of technology. Many times it is hard to completely accept things that are new and costly - which could be a reason for the laws being drawn out as they have been.

Assistive technology is becoming more readily available in classrooms with grants available to further provide for students in need. It is something that is continually evolving to better students and meet their individual needs. Ruth Ann made an excellent point about how recent special education laws are in comparison to others. It is important that teachers continue to expand their understanding of students needs and advocate for the necessary change to continue to improve the laws that impact our students and their families.

I think AT is a great aid that gives students with disabilities the ability to explore, and learn new things. The legal system might have taken a while to accept AT because they wanted to be sure that brining AT into the classroom was a good idea.

The legal system took a long time to accept AT because the government is filled with old people who don't want to become "hip with the times" They didn't want to accept an easier, BETTER and more effective way of doing things. But, when push comes to shove, research proves AT aids people with disabilities far more and costs WAY less!
