Imperialism- a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. one Example of imperialism was the scramble for Africa.
Militarism-the belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests. An example of pre war militarism was Austria Hungary's aggression on Serbia. An Example from ww2 would be when Hitler used nationalism to override individual self-interest and subjugate the welfare of the general population to achieve social goals.
Alliances-Treaties of union between two or more states, for the purposes of defending each other against an attack in war, or of jointly attacking third states, or for both purposes. the upside to an Alliance is that you can get help to attack other countries. Influenza: 20 Million Killed World Wide
Soldiers: 8.5 Million Killed and 21 million wounded

Influenza caused many soldiers in battle to die off. It caused major suffering due to the trench warfare used during World War 1

Europeans: 40 million died
Total: 60 Million dead

Both sides had to undergo through massive loss in life. Germany and the USSR had the biggest casualties on both sides Another reason was because of the holocaust caused by the Nazis

GENOCIDE
Armenian Genocide: 600,000 died due to starvation or killed
Holocaust: More than 6 million

The assassin was used as an excuse to punish Serbia who was then presented with an ultimatum from Austria and if they refused, it would lead to war. Serbia leaders agreed with most demands but wanted to settle others through an international conference. Austria denied their request and declared war. Russia, who was an ally of Serbia, ordered mobilization of troops to go towards the Austrian border. While Stalin was excluded from the Munich Conference, he was not happy about having to join the West, but Hitler promised him territory. Germany and the Soviet Union agreed to divide Poland. Hitler went forth doing so with a surprise attack on September 1st, of 1939 where German aircraft and troop trucks rumbled across Polish borders while aircraft and artillery began the bombing of Poland's capital, Warsaw. France and Great Britain then declared war with Germany on September 3rd, where Poland dramatically fell before they were able to take any military response. From this, Hitler annexed the west half of Poland while Stalin occupied the eastern half and countries north of Poland. If Japan conquered European colonies, it would cause a threat to American controlled Philippine Islands and Guam. So, the U.S government sent aid to strengthen Chinese resistance. Japanese was able to overrun areas such as Vietnam and Cambodia which led to President Roosevelt to cut oil shipments to Japan as of July 1941. Japan planned massive attacks on British and Dutch colonies in S.E Asia and American Outposts in the Pacific. On December 7th, of 1941, American sailors at Pearl Harbor woke up to explosions in which U.S military leaders expected at some point. Within 2 hours, Japan damaged 19 ships, killed more then 2300 people and left 1100 wounded.
