The tone of the poem has a negative tone to it because it talks about death for example "as lightning to the children eased" this is explaining how kids were afraid of lightning and older people who are afraid of death but others tell children to not worry about it because it won't strike at them and every one else not to worry about death because they don't want people to think about it as they get older and older

Special Meaning

A word that has a special or unusual meaning is the word truth. The reason i picked this word is because through out the poem she talks about to tell a truth which i believe relates to the fact that people will die at one point in time and you have to prepare yourself for it. She says "The truth's superb surprise" This quote really stood out to me because it talks about how people have to talk about the truth or it will surprise you when it comes out of nowhere.

The symbol of the poem is lightning because it's another thing that people are afraid of and others are afraid of death and it relates "as lightning to the children eased with explanation kind" as adults explain to children that lightning wont do any harm and that lightning wont hurt them and others tell people that they shouldn't worry about death because they should worry about it or shouldn't talk about it that much

Central Idea

The central idea of the poem is about death and how if you don't slowly prepare it will be like a kid when they see lightning. It scares people but if you don't prepare for it, it will hit you hard. A quote from the poem is "as lightning to children" which i think played a big role into the central idea. It talks about hoe like lightning we are afraid of death but the more we talk about it, like the more we see lightning, we get less scared of it.

the poem relates to her obsession with death. This is true because she relates lightning to death and how people are afraid of death and lighting. This is a connection that all of her poems have in common because a lot of her poems include death with them.
