Qandeel Baloch, a famous influencer and blogger in Pakistan, was murdered by her brother in an "honour killing", purportedly as her online content brought shame to the family. In this short documentary we see Qandeel's father condemning the murder, calling Qandeel "their flower" and expressing deep grief at the loss of his daughter and claims not to have disapproved of her lifestyle. How does this fit into the cultural template that is presented of honour killing? Who is more representative of the "culture" of Pakistan, Qandeel's father or brother?

To address honor crimes from the perspective of women’s rights and well-being, it seems that a third way out of the grim choice between the tradition effect and the disciplinary effect is needed (Kogacioğlu, p.141)

Fadime Sahindal - "She argued for the inclusion of immigrants in European societies, never failing to express compassion for her family’s situation, despite the violence she experienced. In her speech in parliament, she said, ‘If society had taken its responsibility and helped my parents to feel a greater stake in Swedish society then perhaps this might have been avoided"

Dowry murders are characterised by Narayan as a recent phenomenon that is being conflated with a traditional one. Narayan illustrates how Dowry and Dowry murder are distinct processes, with the latter exacerbated and intensified by commercialisation and commodity culture.

If we were to take her template to analyse a recent manifestation of misogyny in “Western” culture that would not be characterised as “traditional”, we could look at the America First group profiled by Louis Theroux in his latest documentary, Extreme and Online. America First are culturally located in the modern frameworks and ideologies of internet culture and the alt-right. They do, however, declare allegiance to a Christian ethos, while simultaneously using shocking obscenity and rape threats that can be associated with the internet assemblage of extreme porn, incel culture and online abuse of women.

Is the example of members of the alt-right group's degradation of women “traditional” because of its Christian affiliation in a comparable way to Dowry murder and Hinduism? Narayan's descriptions of mythological appeals to fire and Sita and tenuous cultural reference points that are drawn could equally be invoked by allusions to the biblical template of the Madonna/Whore narrative, though it would be obvious to Western audiences that such links might legitimise and romanticise such behaviour that is framed as an abhorrent and exceptional “modern phenomenon”.
