I paired with Joseph , we tried to make the puppet spit on their hands and wipe it on their pants, then walk. It’s just that we didn’t have enough time to finish the whole thing, but all in all, I think we did a pretty good job.

I brought my sandwich and pretended my hand is a creature. I think it’s really fun of how expressive a hand could be, I think I wanna explore that more in my further pixilation stop motion.

I used blankets and lots of other objects to create a tornado with a face, I think the humanization of the tornado is really fun. My first idea was just a simple tornado to create a thunder to crack on the person. But when I’m creating the work with my friends, I decided to put a face on the tornado to make it more fun, and to be honest , it turned out really well! It really added a bit of creativity to the work .

Me and Joseph were trying to do a weird moving sequence, we were struggling with how the movements should be like so he filmed me to get some reference, we tried to import it in Dragonframe to do it frame by frame but we really struggled about it. So in the end we just put the reference and Dragonframe side by side to do the stop motion animation.

Claymation practice

I bought some different clay online to do my claymation, but the problem is , the clay I bought is cloud clay, and it dries a bit too fast…… But in the end , I still managed to do a pretty decent claymation in the end. But as a practice , it’s good enough in my opinion, it made me thought about what should I do in the ICA project of my claymation. I think I’m gonna make the cat jump down , turn into a puddle, puddle changes color into blue and the cat walkes out of the puddle.

I’m doing a pixilation based on the practice that I did , but this time , I added some more characteristics to the objects interacting with my hand. I really like how my hand has its own emotions as well.

But the problem is , I used a green colored crisp bag on a green back ground, big mistake.

This is gonna be my final pixilation stop motion animation. I used a pink crisp bag this time so no worries. I think this is currently the best one yet. The characteristics on the hand is really fun , I really like how when the crisp bag swallows the hand and the hand shakes violently. When the hand swallows the crisps was also fun as well.

Ok so during the session on Thursday, I didn’t feel very well and left the session early , but I did had ideas about what should I do about my puppet stop motion. So in my presentation PPT, I wanted to do a “slap” sound for the pixilation, then again, doing it for the puppet sounds kool as well. So I’m gonna try to do that next week during the session.

I did a quick puppet stop motion this lab session. It’s more of a practice for puppet animation, because I always find puppets hard to control and animate? Because all the joints are connected and it’s really hard to just move the parts where I want it to move.

This is my paper cutting animation, I was really interested in the Monkey King folk lore in China so I used multiple elements in the story to present in this stop motion. Like the rock that the character came out of, the stick he pulls out from his ear and the cloud he summons and flies away. I’m really satisfied with my work this time, I consider it my best stop motion so far this semester. The paper cutting parts are colorful and the movements of the character are fun and creative.

I was interested in the whole pixilation creatives, but most of the pixilation animation I saw was using other objects to reference as food or just a whole human body as a “puppet”. Which is pretty creative, but I kinda want to focus on the point where the hand can express human emotions , kinda like in Tom and Jerry where the owner of Tom only showed her feet and still can express really good emotions. So I remembered Thing from The Addams Family, it’s just a hand but still it has multiple emotions just from the movements.

I rewatched the first stop motion I did and I found multiple mistakes. First of all the edge of the table is in the shot ; secondly , the puppet has black color on its body but there’s a black background; lastly the lighting is not balanced.

I forgot whether was I the director or not, but I did came out of the creative ideas in this pixilation. I wanted to use the props to create creatures and “ special effects “, I really like how I came up with the video game kind of style in this pixilation.

I kept a cat myself and I was really interested in the flexibility and fluidity of the cat . Then I found this claymation series online by Threadwood animation, where they do claymation of the stupid things that cat do, I really like the shape of the cat’s designs they did in their shorts. So I referenced and took inspiration from their shorts.

This is a stop motion animation series which is very popular and famous in China ( especially in the 2000s), It’s all animated in paper cutting animation, the character designs and shapeful and fun. But my favorite part of this animation is the color designs.

Chinese Shadow Puppetry is an amazing traditional culture in my country, and because I’m featuring a famous Chinese traditional folk lore character, why not take the style inspiration from some amazing cultures in China, Shadow puppetry has a unique style of designing the characters——they’re always on their sides, which I consider is not only a choice of style but also easy to manipulate the puppets when telling the story.

I grew up watching Havoc in Heaven so the style really stuck in my brain( in a good way) , it’s kind of why I got interested in animation, it’s creative and it spreads the gospel of the beautiful Chinese mythologies.

For my object animation, I used different objects to represent different creatures. I really like how I made the different objects move with different emotions and style. And when the mouse explodes it’s really fun as well.

This is the final showreel of my stop motion animation, I added sound effects and fixed some stop motions in post as well(the paper cutting animation and the claymation). Sometimes I can’t find the perfect sound effects to fit my animation, but sometimes you got to be creative, like the rustling sounds , I just searched up paper rubbing sounds and it fits amazingly.

I implemented the cannon on Megatron as a part of the puppet animation as well. Which I think is something that regular puppets can’t do, there’s so many possibilities in toys and action figures .

So actually I’m kind of struggling in puppet animation, it’s kind of hard to keep up with the LAUV, and even harder if you just do the puppet movements from imagination. But I had this idea, lots of people online uses toys or action figures to do stop motion , why not I try it as well! So I went and found some references online to inspire me.
