CONNECTED BUT ALONE

Over the years, technology has become part of our lives wherein tools, resources and information are readily available at our fingertips. It made our lives to work faster, a lot easier, and more productive. It brings people to places where they want to be and connect people in different continents around the world.

Modern technology has contributed massive impact and has had an impressive influence to the way people communicate. Exchange of ideas and information became more efficient by just one click of a button, people can communicate through emails, faxes, mobile phones, video calls and social medial channels.

As modern technology evolved, generations of all ages have also upgraded the way they communicate with other people. Interpersonal interaction has been compromised in a way that people rather text than talk. They are reliant on what technology can offer and expect more from it but are actually setting theirselves up to be isolated. Social gatherings such as meetings, conventions, events, parties and family gatherings wherein interaction and communication has been bargained by what technology can do such as updating what they are “currently” doing, FaceTime or video call people who are physically distant, busy scrolling over their smartphones on what to buy online or simply busy playing online games.

People nowadays, don’t have the time to talk things that really matter. “Alone together” rose up as a concept in which people wants to be with each other but are also elsewhere connected to places and people where they want to be. Though they are physically present, but they are mentally absent. People are slowly forgetting the real essence of communication and their full attention has been diverted on the power of digital technology which the users have a full control of it to be entertained.

Smartphones are now easily acquired and almost everyone has full access on the internet. It has become an essential gadget to everyone to the point that one cannot function well if it’s not on their side, bags or even in their pockets. It has become a habit to check their smartphones at all times even when they go to sleep or upon waking up.

Social media has influenced people on how they think and act. The more the person become active socially through the internet the more the person is to be likely reticent in person. Modern technology has removed the interpersonal engagement of one person to each other.

Technology is making a bid to human connection. Though communication has been compromised by modern technology, it’s still in the person whether to give importance or not to personal interaction. Listening, eye contact, and full attention are still the key to effective communication because it gives a special connection to each other to fully understand what a certain information is being relayed based on gestures, tone of voice and facial expression.
