Figuring out your depth of field can drastically change the way a viewer looks at the picture. If your f number is small it gives you a larger aperture making the depth of field lower. If you have a higher f number then your aperture is smaller giving you a higher depth of field. Figuring out the depth of field can make or break a photo. So it’s really important to be knowledgeable when it comes to depth of field so you can create a better and more profound photo.

  • Pixels - a minute area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed.
  • Image resolution - the detail an image holds
  • Megabyte - a unit of information equal to 220 bytes or, loosely, one million bytes.
  • Megapixel - a unit of graphic resolution equivalent to one million or (strictly) 1,048,576 (220) pixels
  • Gigabyte - a unit of information equal to one billion (109) or, strictly, 230 bytes
  • Jpeg - a format for compressing image files.
  • Raw - allow for much more editing than JPEG files.
  • Tiff -  is a standard in the printing and publishing industry. TIFF files are significantly larger than their JPEG counterparts, and can be either uncompressed or compressed using lossless compression.
  • Png - is a file format for image compression
  • White balance - the color balance on a digital camera.
  • Histogram - a diagram consisting of rectangles whose area is proportional to the frequency of a variable and whose width is equal to the class interval.
  • Aperture - a space through which light passes in an optical or photographic instrument, especially the variable opening by which light enters a camera.
  • Shutter speed - the time for which a shutter is open at a given setting.
  • Depth of field - the distance between the nearest and the furthest objects that give an image judged to be in focus in a camera.
  • Aperture priority - an exposure system used in some automatic cameras in which the aperture is selected by the user and the appropriate shutter speed is controlled automatically.
  • Shutter priority - a system used in some automatic cameras in which the shutter speed is selected by the user and the appropriate aperture is then set by the camera.
  • Bitmap - a representation in which each item corresponds to one or more bits of information, especially the information used to control the display of a computer screen.
  • Exposure - the quantity of light or other radiation reaching a photographic film, as determined by shutter speed and lens aperture.
  • Watermarking - mark with a watermark.
  • Optical zoom -  a true zoom lens, like the zoom lens you'd use on a film camera. They produce much better-quality images.
  • Digital zoom -  is a function of a digital camera used to make the image seem more close-up. Digital zoom on a digital camera works the same as cropping and enlarging a photo in a graphics program.
  • Bracketing -  is the general technique of taking several shots of the same subject using different camera settings.
  • Light meter - A light meter is a device used to measure the amount of light. ... Typically a light meter will include either digital or analog electronic circuit, which allows the photographer to determine which shutter speed and f-number should be selected for an optimum exposure, given a certain lighting situation and film speed.
  • Image stabilization - is a family of techniques that reduce blurring associated with the motion of a camera or other imaging device during exposure.
  • Noise - is random variation of brightness or color information in images, and is usually an aspect of electronic noise.
  • Lag time - shutter lag is the delay between triggering the shutter and when the photograph is actually recorded.
  • Hot shoe - A hot shoe is a mounting point on the top of a camera to attach a flash unit and other compatible accessories. 
  • Fisheye -  is an ultra wide-angle lens that produces strong visual distortion intended to create a wide panoramic or hemispherical image.
  • Macro - Macro photography is about photographing objects that are very close to the lens, the film or the sensor. 
  • Telephoto -  a telephoto lens is a specific type of a long-focus lens in which the physical length of the lens is shorter than the focal length.
  • Wide angle - a wide-angle lens refers to a lens whose focal length is substantially smaller than the focal length of a normal lens for a given film plane.
  • DSLR - (Digital Single Lens Reflex) A digital still image camera that uses a single lens reflex (SLR) mechanism.
  • Dynamic range - The dynamic range of the subject is a measure of the range of light intensities from the shadows to the highlights.
  • Exposure compensation - Exposure compensation is a technique for adjusting the exposure indicated by a photographic exposure meter, in consideration of factors that may cause the indicated exposure to result in a less-than-optimal image.

The reason for this is that images different sources of light have a different ‘color’ (or temperature) to them. Fluorescent lighting adds a bluish cast to photos whereas tungsten (incandescent/bulbs) lights add a yellowish tinge to photos.

    • Auto – this is where the camera makes a best guess on a shot by shot basis. You’ll find it works in many situations but it’s worth venturing out of it for trickier lighting.
    • Tungsten – this mode is usually symbolized with a little bulb and is for shooting indoors, especially under tungsten (incandescent) lighting (such as bulb lighting). It generally cools down the colors in photos.
    • Fluorescent – this compensates for the ‘cool’ light of fluorescent light and will warm up your shots.
    • Daylight/Sunny – not all cameras have this setting because it sets things as fairly ‘normal’ white balance settings.
    • Cloudy – this setting generally warms things up a touch more than ‘daylight’ mode.
    • Flash – the flash of a camera can be quite a cool light so in Flash WB mode you’ll find it warms up your shots a touch.
    • Shade – the light in shade is generally cooler (bluer) than shooting in direct sunlight so this mode will warm things up a little.

    Photo-shoot plan: I went outside my backyard with my mom during golden hour. I took shot of her eating a sweet roll.
    Reflection: I think my pictures went really well. I wish  had a better setting then just my backyard but I worked with what I had. I liked that it was golden hour and the light was pretty good and shone well on my pictures.
