Verbal Irony: When Annemarie and Kirsti were talking about the Hirches and where they had went.. Kirsti had stated that she thinks they had went on vacation to the seashore, which Annemarie thought was not the case.. she had replied saying that they must've had brought a basket of pink-frosted cupcakes with them in a sarcastic way.
This is an exmaple of verbal irony by how Annemarie replies to Kirsti. You can tell that what she said was meant in a sarcastic way. When Annemarie had heard what could have possibly happened to the Hirches from Kirsti, she probably thought that it was unbelieveable and wasn't the case which caused her to reply back with sarcasm.

Dramatic Irony
Mama and Uncle Henrik had lied to Annemarie to keep her safe. If she had been asked a question from someone and she knew the answer.. that would cause her to lie and to feel guilty.
This is an example of dramatic irony because we (the readers) knew that if Annemarie had known the truth then she could have possibly messed things up by being suspicious if she was asked a question by soldiers. After she found out why they kept a secret from her, she had started to understand why.

Situational Irony:
When the casket had been opened up, they would probably have expected a body when they had first noticed the casket.. but instead there were blankets and clothing inside of it. This is an example of situational irony by knowing that since the soldiers were getting suspicious of the casket... they would have thought that there was a body in there since Mrs.Johansen had told them it was (but it really wasn't). But after the soldiers had left, the casket was opened and there actually wasn't a body, there was just blankets and clothing.
