The Aleppo earthquake was caused by the movement of the African plate and the Arabian plate on the Dead Sea Faultline, also known as the Levant Fault. These plates are moving in the same direction but at different speeds, and this is called a transform plate boundary. The Arabian plate is moving 1.9cm/y and the African plate is moving 0.6cm/y. Aleppo is in a geographic fault zone prone to earthquakes.

In the current day people have enough notice to leave their houses to go and find refuge with a family member or friend some place far away from where the expected earthquake is to occur. In the time period of the Aleppo Earthquake lots of countries and cities had conflicts of interest. The Aleppo earthquake was larger than people thought it was going to be, and they also didn't have the technology to detect this major earthquake. They only had a small warning of the earthquake which was the earthquake the day before on the 10th of October 1138.

The long term affects are also able to be seen by photographs taken in present time. You can see that there were not efforts put into rebuilding the city, as it is now in ruins and the occupants were either killed in the earthquake or fled to refuge.
