Certain stories stand the test of time because they have a good plot and storyline. Also it depends on the type of story, historical fiction might stand the test of time because people want to read about history and adding elements of fiction make it more interesting. People might read Shakespeare's work still because plays are still being put on today. All stories must have at least a plot, timeline and it also depends on what type of story and characters it has. All stories must have either 1st person, 2nd person or 3rd person
