He was born in 1445 in Florence. His father was a tanner. He was first apprenticed to a goldsmith after he finished school, but Sandro preferred painting so his dad instead apprenticed him to a master painter, Filippo Lippi. Lippi taught him many techniques such as panel painting (painting on flat pieces of wood or metal), fresco painting (painting on walls), and perspective. Under Lippi, he painted frescoes in the Prato Cathedral.
(Sandro Botticelli, Brittanica Academic)

His painting style can be described as robust, graceful, and the figures are strong and defined. The expressions on the subject of the painting often had a contemplative look to them. He often used softer colors for the background while using stronger colors for the subjects of the art. He also specialized in portraits and converting written descriptions into paintings.
(Sandro Botticelli, Britannica Academic)

He never married as he was absorbed by his art and lived with his family. By 1470, he was an established master who had his own workshop. By 1478 he entered his artistic prime. Some of his most famous works are The Birth of Venus and Primavera. He was also summoned by the pope at the time along with some other master painters to work on the Sistine Chapel. He turned in three paintings: Events of the Life of Moses, The Temptation of Christ, and The Punishment of Korah.
(Sandro Botticelli, Brittanica Academic)

As important as his religious works were, his secular (nonreligious) works hold just as much, if not more importance. He specialized in portraits. It was most likely because of this that the Medicis decided to sponsor him. The subjects of some of his secular works were of some of the Medici family members such as a portrait of Giuliano de’ Medici, the brother of the ruling Medici of the time, Lorenzo de’ Medici. Botticelli also painted the grandfather of Lorenzo and also his father. He also included all four of them in Adoration of the Magi.
(Sandro Botticelli, Britannica Academic)

As the Medici family fell and Lorenzo The Magnificent died, Botticelli also faded into the background as the High Renaissance (The period of time where Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael dominated the arts) brought a new style that overshadowed Botticelli. Towards the end of his career, his painting took on a religious theme. Some examples are St. Augustine in his Cell, Agony in the Garden, and Last Communion of St. Jerome. He died in Florence on May 17, 1510.
(Sandro Botticelli, World History The Modern Era)
