Working Times Regulations

Looking into the basics of 'Working Times Regulations' we understand that simply, a person under contracted employment cannot surpass 48 hour working weeks (over an average collected across 17 weeks). If a person is under the age of 18, they cannot work more than 8 hours a day/40 hours a week legally, however you can chose to work more than the hours specified above by opting out of said 48 hour agreement. Exceptions can be made for those working within military sectors, private households or other areas that require 24 hour staffing.

When we look to apply this to sporting business we know that (unless specified otherwise) a junior member of staff could not be employed to run the gym for a period longer than 8 hours at a time. This might mean that if the gym was wishing to function as cheaply as possible they may have to employ more than one member of staff to work particular days. This may be a disadvantage in some cases as it may be costly to train staff in certain departments of their roles and responsibilities. They may need to attend/complete a gym instructing course and become qualified to carry out any gym inductions safely. This may be expensive for the gym if they do not have the facilities to train staff through their own means.

Christmas day trading act (2004

(Matthew Flello)
The Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004 (c 26) is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It prevents shops over 280 m²/3,000 sqft from opening on Christmas Day in England and Wales. The Act applies only to large shops; small shops can continue to open on Christmas Day.

The aim of the Act was to keep Christmas Day a "special" day, whereby all major retailers would be closed. Although it was traditional for major retailers to close on 25 December, some retailers, such as Woolworth's, began to open some stores in the late 1990s. Both religious groups and shop worker unions were against the idea of Christmas openings, leading to pressure on the Government to pass legislation to prevent the practice.

In 2006, the Scottish Parliament debated a similar law that would apply to shops in Scotland. The law was enacted in 2007 and it contained special provisions for New Year's Day retail activities too.
