         <description><![CDATA[<div>Due to the need for economic growth in the US, Philippine colonization was viewed as necessary by the end of the 19th Century. As the great depression worsened, concerns grew over the needed cost to govern the Philippines. In addition, white Americans were concerned over Filipino immigrants competing with white Americans for jobs, potentially&nbsp;taking them. Since Filipinos were classified as US nationals, they were exempt from immigration quotas.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

White vigilante groups began harassing the Filipinos, 22-year-old Fermin Tonera was shot and killed by a white raiding party.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
