Analyze the symbolic meaning of the fence. What does a fence symbolize to Rose? What does it symbolize to Troy? Does the fact that the fence is not being built foreshadow anything?

The symbolic meaning of the fence towards rose is to put a barrier between them and society and keep all the negativity out. Troy clearly doesn't care because instead of building the fence he decides to go about his day. YES! the fact that the fence is not being built foreshadow the fact that Troy couldn't care less who enters or leaves his life.

I believe that the fence to Rose represents closure and kind of saying to leave the past in the past and move forward with your life. Stop looking back at what could've been and focus on what could be done for the future. The fence to Troy I believe symbolizes giving up and not trying anymore, being okay with what's happened and didn't happened. The fence can also symbolize keeping him from doing what he really truly wants to do, and he's not ready to do any of that so he doesn't finish it, because maybe he still has some kind of hope that there is time to do what he really wants to do but then again deep down inside he knows its too late.

The fences to Rose's point of view symbolizes to protecting her family from anything including the past. The fences to Troy's point of view symbolizes keeping people in the past and maturity because his son never wants to do it and Troy wants him to mature, another thing that it can mean is keeping the present out because he doesn't believe anything has changed. It is foreshadowing because his son Cory is trying to become a football player so by not finishing the fence he still has a chance to accomplish it.

Fences can have and unlimited amount of meanings. For Rose her fences represent security in life. That may not necessarily mean being rich, but means to be happy and safe with the people she loves. For troy the fences symbolizes him being closed minded and what's done is done, what's said is said. Troy does really give much thought to other peoples ideas and dream due to the past events in his life, his fence is to prevent the idea of things going right for other when they didn't go right for him.
The fact that the fence isn't built foreshadows, without moving other obstacles out of the way or coming to terms with current situations, this fence to keep things out or in can't be finished. In order too finally build this fence Troy or any other of the characters have to come to some kind of realization. What if this emotion blocking, fait holding, dream catching fence isn't built? Would the ending still be the same?

The fence is both metaphorically and literally for protection. It's to protect the family and the house. Rose wants Jesus to build a fence and protect her. Troy wants a literal fence to protect his house so no one will take it away because he has worked so hard for what he has.

For rose the fence represents protection and is a way to grow her family and keep them together.
For Troy the fence is his way of keeping his family inside away from the realities of the cruel world that he's struggled with as well as allowing them to live freely without societies judgement.
The fence not being built right now foreshadows that there is some kind of conflict or issue that is going to form as we read more on into the book.

Bono states in the play that people build fences to keep people in or out and Bono questions Troy on his intention for this fence. We believe that the fence symbolizes for Rose being trapped in this repetitive life. She's been with the same guy for 15 years waiting for Friday to come for payday, and cooks dinner every night for troy and repeat. We also believe the fence symbolizes for Troy is him keeping his family in the fence to keep them safe from the outside world so they wont get hurt by what he thinks is "reality". Because the fence isn't being built it can foreshadow his family seeping through the cracks and him loosing control of himself and his family.

What the fences mean to troy id to build fences to keep people out because he is inflexible to change, roses meaning to the fences is to build fences to keep people in because she has the need to defend her family. the fact the fence not being built does foreshadow the future about either rose not being to build her fence to protect her family, and troy to fail on keeping people out and eventually let people in.
