Lauren's Self-Discovery by Lauren Trerotola

In this project, you will illustrate and reflect upon your evolving perceptions of your own identity, students, communities, and critical service learning as a framework for teaching for equity and diversity. During the first four weeks of the course, you select and/or take photographs that represent your thoughts, feelings, and experiences about your identity, racial identity, students and their communities, and service. The first four photos and reflections are phase one of the project--Pre-Photovoice. As you engage with texts and the community, you will take different photographs and reflect upon your perspective. The second four photos and reflections are phase two of the project--Post-Photovoice. Throughout the semester, you will house your photographs and reflections for consistent feedback on padlet.com. On the assigned dates, you will bring physical or internet copies of your photos to class to discuss with your peers. During our final reflection course, you will present a final 5-minute selection of these photos with accompanying reflections in a documentary video.

Reflection: How do I perceive the New Brunswick community and students? In what ways have your perceptions of the students and communities of your clinical placement changed based on your interactions with the New Brunswick community? What do you wish you could do differently in your clinical placement based on your experiences this semester? How will you use the information from the course in your future classroom? What text have we read that have challenged and/or affirmed your perceptions of diverse students and communities?

My perception of the New Brunswick community was limited as a commuter student. I would go to my classes on Rutgers campuses and then I would leave. I would say during my time there overall I never thought about it much. I think during this class, I examined more of the community than I have most places I have been. It has definitely become apparent to me that wherever I end up teaching, knowing the city or town will be an integral part of my job. Seeing the place my student’s live in through their eyes, knowing the resources they have access to, or even walking the commute the students take to get to school everyday plays a direct role in who they are and what they experience. I recognize that to be their biggest supporter, I need to have first-hand knowledge of those instances. I think the incorporation of community in my classroom will depend on which grade I end up teaching, but I know for sure I want my students to understand and explore the sense of community in the classroom, the school, and the city, and what role they play in impacting it. One of the articles that helped shape my perspective was the “A Traffic Jam in Atlanta” piece. Now, when I drive through almost any town, I look at where certain stores are placed, main roads, housing, etc. and consider the reasoning and ramifications of why it was developed that way. I think about who it hinders and who it supports and how my students should also be able to recognize those deliberate decisions.

My race is white/Caucasian. I believe I understood the color of my race from a young age. However, I began to understand what implications my race holds in our society around my teenage years, and I am still learning about all the ways my race benefits from this system. Thinking about Bettina Love, and her suggestion about changing the language from ally to co-conspirator resonated with me. An ally sounds like it offers silent support while a co-conspirator evokes the idea of a partnership. That change in language adjusted how I see allyship and how I would much rather be a partner. Also, our class discussion about disrupting, questioning, educating, and echoing spoke to me in layman's terms about how to transition from ally to co-conspirator. It was one of the first times I felt I could actually be productive in being a co-conspirator so I hold it close to me and think of how to apply it often. Specifically, in what settings I would disrupt or question and in which settings I would echo. I have been critically thinking about in which instances I would need my voice to be the dominant one and in which settings it would be more useful in being the echo or support and how differentiating that is vital to being a co-conspirator.

What is my identity?

My identity consists of pivotal moments of enlightenment and change as the photo reflects a person through small dots and broken pieces. Just like the photograph I took of someone else’s street art, my identity hinges on the things people see and believe about me. Meanwhile, the rest of it is hidden, kept close to me, away from the main population of our world. The photo is in black and white because the world likes clean lines and boxes to label ourselves, but I believe that people are far more complex and interesting than the lines we draw around ourselves.

What factors shape my identity?

The crucial factors that help to shape my identity are my family, friends, job, and interests. My family and friends provide the basis of the type of person I am and the person I wish to be moving forward. My job as a baker is a part of my identity because it the profession I am labeled under and it aids in developing my work ethic.. My interests, like cooking, watercolor, sewing, and playing music, also shape my identity because they are the points of commonality that link people to one another.

Who am I?

I am a human being who strives to do the best I can for myself and others every day. I am devoted to a life of service, kindness, and learning. I choose to see people for all the good they can bring to the world, and I try to give that same kindness to myself by learning from my mistakes and always giving my all.

How do I show up in the world?

If I were checking the boxes society provided, I am a white, English-speaking, heterosexual American woman born in the last three months of the 80s. I attended schools in the suburbs and came from a supportive family with parents who worked themselves to the bones to give me the necessities they did not have.

As to personality, I am seen as a team player. Perhaps as a middle child, I am a natural negotiator. Still, throughout growing up years to my career now, people have been happy to work with me because I can see beyond my personal desires to view the bigger picture. I have always felt that if some people are struggling, then we are all struggling, and we all have a responsibility to help one another succeed.

How does my identity inform my values, ideas, and actions?

My identity forms my values, ideas, and actions because it is the foundational lens through which I view and navigate the world. I behave and think along the lines of those identities, and personally, through music, art, food, and language, I have been able to begin to understand what the world looks like through the lens of others.
