         <description><![CDATA[<div>~1254 - 8 January 1324<br>~born in Venice, Republic of Venice<br>~Marco Polo explored for the city-state of Venice.<br>~He explored most of his life because he was a merchant however, his longest voyage was 24 years long and he returned in 1269.<br>~His purpose for sailing was for the mercantile trade (learned this from his father).<br>~Although Marco Polo was not the first European explorer to reach China, he was the first to leave a detailed description of his experience there.<br><br>FUN FACTS:<br>~Marco Polo's book about his travels to China inspired Christopher Columbus.<br>~After returning from a 24 year voyage, Marco Polo was imprisoned.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Born- c1485<br>Died- 1528<br>Born in- Val di Greve, Italy<br>Explored for France from 1506 to 1528<br>He was sent to explore the East Coast of North America for a route to the Pacific.<br>He made landfall near Cape Fear, North Carolina and headed north to explore. Verrazzano eventually discovered New York Harbor, which now has a bridge spanning it named for the explorer. After returning to Europe, Verrazzano made two more voyages to the Americas. On the second, in 1528 , he was killed and eaten by the Natives of one of the Lower Antilles probably on Guadeloupe.<br><br>Fun Facts:<br><br>1. He was introduced to the Court of France.<br><br>2. His ship was called La Dauphine.<br><br>3. He also discovered a "beautiful" harbor naming it Angouleme- later known as Manhattan.  </div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Born in 1460 in Santervas De Campos, Spain <br><br>Died in 1521 in Havana, Cuba<br><br> He served as a page at the court of Aragon, where he learned social skills, religion and military tactics. He eventually became a soldier and fought against  the Moors in Granada.<br><br>He heard of gold in Puerto Rico and in 1508 he set to explore for 2 years and became the governor of Puerto Rico.<br><br>In 1509, Ponce De Leon lost his leadership of Puerto Rico. In 1512, he decied to continue searching for new lands, hoping to find more gold and expand the Spanish empire.  <br><br>                    Fun Facts<br><br>- He was the founder of Florida and became the governor.<br><br>-  He named the region Florida (meaning "flowery").<br><br>- He was given the right to be come governor of whatever land he comes across.</div>]]></description>
