This quote explains that in that current time there wasn't really anyone like her and she was different. There was no such thing as a bilingual kid and she didn't have any safety net. She was different and kids don't like that. Alvarez realizes that she is not able to go back to fluently expressing her ideas in Spanish, even though she is able to understand it.
