When I taught at the primary level, every year we began with a classroom snack. This snack had strategic pieces that we used to model the type of classroom we wanted. Life savers so we always helped our friends, teddy grahams were the students, marshmallows were the kind soft words we used when speaking to each other! We didn't want any rotten bananas! :) i included it below!

In Spanish class students can get very self conscious about speaking or answering in the target language because they just aren't too sure they have the right answer. At the beginning of the year I talk about this and let them know it is unkind and inappropriate to laugh when someone is trying. Other than just the "talk", I model applauding after students present in front of the class or after the entire class sings a song. I do believe the classroom culture is set by the teacher. Your kindness and patience with them will spread throughout the class. I did see some of my 6th grade students high five each other today after they presented in front of the class. I really liked that and might start using that.

Each day in Kindergarten we have a morning meeting. For these first few weeks, we have played a lot of name games so the kids could get to know the names of their peers sooner rather than later. These meetings don't last long...but the kids love it. It is a way to form a classroom community. They are also a great way to hear from all kids, and for all students to practice their listening skills.

In the math classroom, it can sometimes prove challenging to foster positive thinking. At the beginning of the year, I talked with students about the power of positive thinking. In groups, we discussed ways that we can learn from our mistakes and gave examples of mistakes we have made in the past that we have learned a great lesson from.

Because answering in math class can be scary when you are learning new things, I make sure to always restate a student's answer. I always try to find some part of their answer that is right, even if in the big picture, their answer is way off. This could even be something as simple as, "I like where your brain is headed, but I'm looking for a more specific answer."

I also do a lot of group work with my students. At the beginning of the year, I sat with a group and modeled what it looked like to work together in a respectful manner. It is great to see students reminding each other to stay on task or keep working in a nice way.

6th grade Math PSMS

I feel that it is difficult to get to know your students personally when you only have them for 45 minutes a day. To help with this, every Monday I ask students to share about their weekend. It is strictly voluntary, but I have found that students really enjoy sharing and I learn more about them. This really helps me make connections with them and students also get to know more about their classmates

When we started the year, I had a conversation with my students where we agreed that learning French is not inherently easy and how we will work to avoid things which do not contribute to a positive learning environment that would make learning even more difficult and scary. Additionally, every day my students start off with a scripted conversation in French which they can do with whomever they want, and I see a lot of students helping others at this time. As we get to the older levels, I also encourage students to tell each other "What's new?" where they will tell what they did over the weekend or after school and then share with me, allowing me to learn a bit about what interests them. I also use English strategically to praise my students and make them feel comfortable as learning in French can be scary, and I do not feel that praising them in French always offers them the best positive reinforcement and support!
