I would like to introduce you to our day of school.

Lots of school in Germany start at 7:45am, but some do have other time like 8am.

We have one School Subjekt for 1h 30min. One school Subjekt consists of two school lessons, one school lesson is 45min (so that's why 1h 30min).between the school lessons we get a 5 min break. This is not a must. The 5min break was invented while corona time. We had to wear our masks, so the teachers gave us 5 min breaks, so we could take of our masks. Since we did that for almost two year, we got used to the 5min breaks, so our teachers still do give us 5min break.

Bevor we get to our next subject we have a 20min break. Our first 20min break starts at 9:15am to 9:35am and our second 20min break starts at 11:05am to 11:25am.

Usually we have 6 school lesson. From 7:45am to 12:50pm. Sometimes we have afternoon class. The afternoon class is from 1:45pm to 3:15pm. Bevor the afternoon class we have an 50 min lunch break, from 12:55pm to 1:45pm.

Students from the Oberstufe sometimes even have longer school. From 3:15pm to 4:45pm and from 4:45pm to 6:15pm.

Our school opens at 7am and closes at 5:45pm. The classes from 4:45pm to 6:15pm are only PE.

1&2 period: 7:45am - > 9:15am

20min break

3&4 period: 9:35am - > 11:05am

20min break

5&6 period: 11:25am - > 12:55am

50min lunch break

7&8 period: 1:45pm - > 3:15pm

9&10 period: 3:15pm - > 4:45pm

11&12 period: 4:45pm - > 6:15pm

The picture up there is our timetable. On Monday the first two boxes are empty, because our class doesn't have any classes on Monday morning. So on Monday the school for our class starts at 9:35am.

1st, 2nd, 3th & 4th grade is Grundschule.

5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th & 10th grade is Mittelstufe.

11th, 12th & 13th grade is Oberstufe.

Last week we were on a class trip to Belgium. we didn't stay in a hotel, we had our own houses in friend groups. on Monday we drove to Belgium and came back on Friday. It was a 7 to 9 hour drive. we went to different cities.

On Tuesday we went to a Oostende, a city beside Brenede (the city we were staying at). On Wednesday we went to Brügge, an very old city and on Thursday we went to Antwerpen, it's the biggest city in Belgium.

We mostly had free time and walk around the city in our groups. We just went to a museum together in Antwerpen. On Tuesday evening we went to the beach and stayed there for an hour.

It was so much fun! but sadly the time went by very fast😔.

I heard that we are having a Zoom meeting on November 1st. I'm really looking forward to it and can't wait!!

If you’re interested in K-pop or want to try something new, I really recommend checking out BIGBANG.

They’re one of the most legendary K-pop groups in South Korea. BIGBANG debuted in 2006 under YG Entertainment, and the group is known for their amazing stage presence, catchy songs, and cool fashion style.

Their music is a mix of hip-hop, pop, R&B, and electronic – so there’s something for everyone. Some songs you should totally try are “Bang Bang Bang,” “Fantastic Baby,” and “Haru Haru.”

Even if you’re not into K-pop yet, BIGBANG might change your mind. Give them a listen you won’t regret it!

As part of our school life in Korea, I’d love to share two things that are happening soon! Our Sports Day and a picnic at the Han River.

Sports Day is a big annual event at our school. All the students gather at the Jamsil Student’s jym and compete in various games, such as basketball, relay races, tug of war, and group jump rope. We’re divided into 3 teams, international, western, and orient. Germany and France is team Western. Last year, team Western won the 1st Place! We cheer for our teammates with several cheering songs. It’s not just about winning, it’s about teamwork and having fun together. Some parents even come to watch and support us. The energy is amazing!

After Sports Day, me and my friends planned to go to Han river. Do you have heard about Han river? Han river is the biggest river in Korea, and it’s one of the most popular spots in Seoul for picnics. We usually bring snacks like pizza, fried chicken, and ramen. People ride bikes, fly kites, or just sit on picnic mats and chat. It’s a peaceful way to unwind after all the excitement of Sports Day.

How have you all been lately? It feels like it’s been a while since we last talked, and I really wanted to catch up and hear how things are going with you!

I still remember how much fun it was last time when we talked about K-pop and exchanged song recommendations. It was such a cool experience! I also really enjoyed chatting about Korean and German slang, it was so funny and interesting to see how different and similar they can be. I was honestly surprised by how much you all know about Korean culture. It made me really happy!

As for me, I just finished my midterm exams, and now I’m busy with a bunch of school assignments. Life has been pretty hectic these days! I’m now in my second year of high school, and since university entrance exams are getting closer, the pressure during the exam period was especially intense. In Korea, we have a grading system from level 1 to 9, and our university admissions heavily depend on which grade we get. It made the exams even more stressful this time.

I’m curious how is the education and exam system in Germany? Do you also feel a lot of pressure when it comes to getting into university?

On a brighter note, now that exams are over, we’re preparing for our school sports festival. It’s one of the most exciting events of the year! One of the highlights is something called a “cheering competition,” where each team has its own cheer song. We practice our chants and performances as a group, and it really brings everyone together. Practicing with my friends has been a lot of fun, and I’m really looking forward to the event.

In German class at school, we’ve recently been learning about bicycles and the school system in Germany. I heard that bicycles are really common there. Is that true? Also, we learned about different types of schools, like Gymnasium, Realschule, and Hauptschule. In Korea, most students go to the same type of high school and prepare for university through a national exam called the “수능”. I heard you also have a major exam called the Abitur, so it feels similar in some ways but also quite different. How do you usually prepare for the Abitur? I’m really curious about how it works for you!

In Korea many students enjoy lots of school events such as Sport Day. Our school's sport day is only 2 days left! Everyone loves it because they can just enjoy whole day with friends and forget about studying.

When you guys visit Korea in Spring season I recommend you visiting 한강공원(Han River Parks) or 롯데월드(Lotte World, famous amusement park). There are lots of cherry blossom trees and things to enjoy!

How did you enjoy Spring in Germany? If you have some memories to tell us or some questions about Korea please feel free to say!

Yesterday, we had a fire evacuation drill. We practiced evacuating the school in case of a real fire. We learned how to use fire extinguishers and what to do after the whole school was evacuated to the playground. Do you have such drills? In Korea, we have a lot of drills to deal with natural disasters from elementary school. I wonder what it is like in Germany.

This Thursday we have an athletic competition. I'm in the cheerleading squad, so we've been practicing cheers for weeks. We sing cheers and cheer for our team to win. In my country, sports competitions are mainly organized by student councils and schools. There are many festivals and play-based events. I heard that the Bundesjugendspiele in Germany has many sports. Do you participate in them and if so, which ones?

Friday gives students a day off in the aftermath of Thursday's sports day. It's our school's own holiday!

Our midterm exams are finally over, and everyone seems a bit more relaxed now. These days, we’re getting ready for our school’s annual sports festival. It’s one of the biggest events of the year, and the cheer squad is busy practicing for their performance. Even though I’m not part of the cheer team, it’s fun to watch them rehearse and see the school slowly getting into the festive mood.

Another highlight recently was a musical project we did in class. We had to create our own musical. It was my first time doing something like that in a school setting, and I was surprised by how creative and enthusiastic everyone was. It was both challenging and memorable.

Also, I really wanted to say how happy I was to be part of the exchange program with you. It was such a meaningful experience, and I truly enjoyed learning about your culture and sharing mine. I still think about the conversations we had and how inspiring they were.

I wasn’t really the type to lead the conversation during the Zoom classes, but I think my German and English have definitely improved a lot thanks to communicating with you all in those languages!

I’m not sure what the weather is like in Germany right now, but here in Korea, it feels like summer has already started. What’s your favorite season? For me, I don’t really like summer because it’s too hot…

Oh! In two days, our school is having a sports day. So right now, I’m busy practicing for a performance. I’ll be performing a traditional Korean folk play called Pungmulnori during the event. If you’ve heard of it before, that would be so cool! I play the janggu, which is an hourglass-shaped drum. If you ever get the chance, I really recommend watching a video of Pungmulnori. It’s a fun and energetic performance using various traditional Korean instruments—I think you might enjoy it! :)

What’s it like living in Germany? I’d love to visit someday and see all the places I’ve only read about in textbooks. If you get the chance, please send me a DM on Instagram with some of your favorite places in Germany. I haven’t been there yet, so I’d love some recommendations. We just finished a ton of exams—haha. We had the most in Korean class, with three evaluations. Shiver. Memorizing classical poetry was definitely not easy. I also wrote a book report after reading Hermann Hesse’s 'Beneath the Wheel' in Korean translation. It was much more interesting than I expected, and it gave me a lot to think about. I even filled up my entire reading log with my thoughts! I’m not sure if you’ve read this book, but I highly recommend it, especially as students. There were many things I could relate to, but also some parts that were quite different from my own experiences.

While reading, I also looked up in Hermann Hesse’s boyhood; it sounded like a nightmare. It seems he really struggled to adapt to his strict parents and school. Honestly, I just wanted to give him a big hug. Sob sob. Of course, I believe that a certain amount of discipline is necessary, but I think it must have been especially hard for Hesse to endure.

Ines, Elisa, Yashu—whenever life gets tough, I hope you’ll lean on people you trust instead of bottling everything up inside. You know we’re always cheering you on, right? I’ll definitely contact you when I visit Germany! It was so nice meeting you guys last time.

I want to talk about nowadays korean drama ‘폭싹 속았수다‘. I think it is already popular to you now. It is story about a girl who dreams of becoming a poet in Jeju island. Despite the hardship of reality, she pursues her own path and live with happy family. The drama vividly brings to life the Jeju’s dialect and regional culture of time, capturing the texture of the era and the emotional growth of the characters. I really like this drama because it’s about korean traditional family culture. Korea’s family is community centered. In the drama, multiple generations often live under one roof and neighbors frequently step in to help each other as is they were family. I'm so happy to be doing this activity with you all. I'd like to share a bit about my recent school life.

Just yesterday, we performed a musical! It was part of our music assessment, so we had been practicing every morning. I'm really proud because I think it went quite well! It felt amazing to create a performance together with my group members, working as a team like that was such a great experience.

I'm curious about what you do in your music classes!

Also, in two days, we have our sports day! At Daeil, we don't hold the event at school, but instead we rent a huge gymnasium called Jamsil Arena. It's really big! We play basketball, dodgeball, tug-of-war, relay races, and more. The cheering competition is the most important part. It gives the most points and everyone in the team gets involved, which I love!

Our teams are divided by major languages, so the German Department (and the French Department) form the Western Language Team. We won last year, so I really hope we can win again this time. I'd love it if you could cheer for us!

guten Tag! Lange nicht gesehen. Ich heiße Dahye Yoon. Unser letztes Treffen ist ja schon einen Monat her. Nach der ersten Zwischenprüfung hatte ich viel zu tun, weil ich sehr viele Übungen aufbekommen habe. Neulich lerne ich fleißig Deutsch. Lernt ihr auch eifrig Koreanisch? Ich freue mich schon sehr auf unser nächstes Treffen. Am 4. Juni habe ich eine Probeklausur. Deshalb habe ich ein bisschen Angst, dass ich vielleicht keine ‘sehr gut’ bekomme. Ich lerne ständig, so aufgeregt bin ich! Was macht ihr denn heutzutage? Ich frage mich, wie euer Alltag nach Ostern aussieht! Vor ein paar Tagen habe ich im Deutsch-Konversationsunterricht über die Stechuhr gelernt. Das war unglaublich interessant. In unserer Schule gibt es das nicht. Beim nächsten Mal möchte ich das unbedingt mal sehen. Wenn wir uns das nächste Mal wirklich treffen, würde ich gerne etwas mit euch unternehmen! Ich bin gespannt, was euch Spaß macht. What fascinated me most in our Zoom session was just how fundamentally different our school systems are. This whole conversation really got me thinking about how much our school systems are connected to our countries' bigger social values and economic structures.

In Korea, our education system is mostly influenced by Confucian values which basically means that things like respecting authority and believing hard work gets you ahead. As we talked about in our Zoom, there's this huge idea here that getting into a top university is the way to succeed in life. This "education fever" means intense competition, super long study hours, and parents investing a ton in our education. It often feels like there's just one main path to "success" that everyone's pushed onto, and your worth almost feels tied to your grades and which university you get into. Even though it definitely makes us disciplined, it also brings a lot of pressure, which can really affect our well-being and limit time for us to just figure ourselves out. In fact, it's pretty common here for students to even give up on their dream major just to get into a higher-ranked university, because the university's name often seems to matter more than the specific field of study. It sounds like that's definitely not the case for you guys.. 

From what I understood from you guys, it just seems to have totally different vibes. It feels like you guys focus more on being practical, letting students have more autonomy, and valuing a wider range of career paths. It sounds like not everyone has to go to university, and skilled trades are much more respected. I found it especially interesting that school usually ends much earlier in the day for you, and it seems like students have more freedom to make their own choices about their time and interests. The way you have continuous assessments instead of huge exams, and generally shorter school days, also hints at a different approach to academic pressure and work-life balance from a young age.

Honestly, it was a cool experience to hear directly from people living in a different culture, instead of just reading about it online. I'm really glad we followed each other on Insta, so we can keep up with each other's lives and continue to share stories! A few months ago, Ines sent me a photo of a German train and some flowers — it was absolutely beautiful. So today, I thought I’d tell you a bit about my school and my country!

At our school, we have to be there by 7:30 in the morning and we don’t finish until 10 at night. it’s really tough 😭😭😭.
In the evening, we have four hours of self-study time, but we only get a 20-minute break! I remember the photo Ines sent me. You were all sitting together in a circle, studying in a school surrounded by nature. It looked so peaceful! Our school is also surrounded by mountains, so getting there in the morning is a real workout, haha.

Here in Korea, we don’t usually study together with friends that often. Instead, a lot of us go to something called a “study cafe” where everyone studies individually in their own little space.
The layout is very separated, which I think shows a lot about Korean people’s preference for focused, independent studying 😅.

We have school lunches here!
Every day, the school prepares a different meal for the students, planned to match our nutritional needs. The food is served on a big tray, with different sections for each dish. From what I’ve heard, some schools in countries like Canada don’t provide lunch, and students bring packed lunches instead. Is it the same for you?

Our school lunches usually include soup, meat, and sometimes even special treats!
We sometimes get things like ice cream, teppan barbecue, or even maratang!
Maratang is a super popular Chinese dish that’s become a huge trend here in Korea .Have you ever tried it? It’s really cool!

Our meals are not only delicious but also well-balanced, so we get to enjoy a variety of nutrients every day

At our school sports festival, we have a special tradition — the cheering squad! Since we’re a foreign language high school, classes are divided by language: Spanish, German, French, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian. We form three big teams: Western, Asia, and International languages, and each team prepares a unique cheer for a cheering battle. When everyone sings their chants together, it gets super loud and exciting! ( I uploaded our cheering video, It's our Western cheering!) We also play games like basketball, dodgeball, tug-of-war, and relays. One of the best parts is the Random Play Dance — where students dance to surprise K-pop songs. It’s one of the most fun events of the year!

Wie geht’s euch? Mir geht’s gut. In letzter Zeit war ich ein bisschen beschäftigt, aber trotzdem läuft alles gut. Vor Kurzem hatte ich eine Prüfung und auch ein Sportfest. Beim Sportfest hatte ich viel Spaß – wir haben zusammen gespielt und angefeuert. Es hat mir richtig viel Spaß gemacht!

Jetzt sind es nur noch ein paar Tage bis zur nächsten Prüfung, also muss ich wieder anfangen zu lernen. Aber ehrlich gesagt ist das gar nicht so einfach. Ich will zwar fleißig sein, aber mein Körper will sich einfach ausruhen. 😓

Ich frage mich in letzter Zeit oft, wie es euch wohl geht. Geht es euch gut?

We had that class together a while ago, I was thinking about it recently and just felt like reaching out. It’s been quite a while, and I honestly wonder how you’re all doing these days. Life’s probably taken us in all kinds of different directions since then😀

And actually, I wanted to share a few songs I’ve been into lately. Especially with you, Ines, I think I remember you saying you liked rock music too? If I got that wrong, my bad lol, but I was honestly so hyped back then, like “waittt, someone else here likes this stuff too??” That stuck with me, so I thought I’d send you a few tracks I’ve been really vibing with.

So here are a few songs I’ve been into lately

First one is “Kelly’s Heroes” by Black Grape. This one’s got a kind of messy, playful Britpop vibe. It reminded me a bit of Blur, which I know you liked, so I thought of you right away.

Then there’s “Shiori” by Creephyp (Sekai no Owari cover) A Japanese track with kinda mellow but deep. Even if you don’t understand the lyrics, I think the feeling really comes through.

And lastly, “Owner of a Lonely Heart” by Yes . Just a total classic. That chorus hits different. It’s kind of dramatic, kind of epic. I love it.

Anyway, hope at least one of these songs makes it onto your playlist.

Recently we had a school sports day! The team was divided into Western language, international language, and Asian language departments, and T-shirts with different colors were worn in each department. The events consisted of basketball, women's dodgeball, tug-of-war, and relay, and all grades participated. As the opening stage of the sports competition, a Pungmul club called Hwimori and a dance club called g.o performed. Also, I belong to the Pungmul club. After the performance, the women's dodgeball and basketball were alternated, and there was lunch time in the middle. I had a lunch box and it was delicious. After lunch time, the rest of the basketball and dodgeball were played, and after that, we played tug-of-war. Additionally, the teacher and student played a basketball game together. I didn't participate, but it was really fun just to watch. I ran a relay after the tug-of-war was over, and I also participated. I fell when my turn came and ran, but I was glad that our team won. Finally, my team, the Western Language Department, won, and it was thrilling because it won for two consecutive years.

Wir verbringen gerade ein paar Tage der Ruhe, nachdem wir die letzten Prüfungen des Semesters hinter uns gebracht haben.

Es ist schwer zu glauben, dass das Semester bald vorbei ist.

Vor dem Ende des ersten Semesters findet bei uns ein großes Kunstfestival statt, bei dem verschiedene Clubs ihre seit Monaten vorbereiteten Performances zeigen und verschiedene Ausstellungen veranstalten.

Das ist eine der jährlichen Veranstaltungen unserer Schule. Wir bereiten uns auf das Festival in der nächsten Woche vor, und ich werde euch wissen lassen, wie es läuft! Macht's gut!
