Same Love

Throughout my music playlist I listen to, I feel as though there are subliminal messages artist have in their music that they try to communicate to the public. From my library I decided to chose "Same Love" by Macklemore and Mary Lambert. Beside the message in this song, it has a pleasing beat but when I listened I always overlooked the lyrics and this assignment as allowed me to see the bigger picture that I was missing.

Why and how is this musical genre is “outside” of your own immediate cultural milieu?

I would first like to say that it is actually hard for me to find things that are outside of my cultural milieu in that although my family and I are African Americans, I feel as though I have done a good job myself exposing myself to other cultures but in context of the assignment, I would say that is genre that the song came from is outside of my milieu for several reasons. First, I am a big fan of Rap and Hip-hop music with my daily actions/ activities being based off that and the song Same Love is in the genre of pop. Furthermore, with me being a straight male there were certain terms and activities that I was unfamiliar with in that the song talks mentions several things about the LGBT community.

How can you understand the cultural perspectives from which this song was written? What does it mean to the performers?

For start, the person that wrote the song, Macklemore, is a straight male so for him to write about song like this can be kind of confusing but Macklemore is a strong activist for everyone having equal rights. In this song he called out all of America for caring about equal rights when it came to colored issues and emphases that this energy needed to be reciprocated to sexuality equality. I feel that since Macklemore wrote it with how big he is in the straight as well as gay communities, his music may have reached the straight communities to help understand that everyone needs to have the same equal rights. To continue, I feel that although it was hard to get everyone on board with the concept, but this song did have a impact on the vote to allow same sex marriage and in a npr.org article "States cannot keep same-sex couples from marrying and must recognize their unions, the Supreme Court says in a ruling that for months has been the focus of speculation. The decision was 5-4." (Npr.org)

Intended audience? How does this song intersect with civic, public life and the affairs of regional, national, and/or global communities?

This song was intended for the entire American community not just a song for the LGBT community. This song spoke on the issues the the LGBT have fitting into America, the so-called "Land of the Free." This song insects with global communities in that, the song intended to protest everyone being able to show their love to whoever they want, whether it be male or female. This song crosses with national issues in that during this same the song was released, the United States were voting to establish same sex marriage.

Thoughts on the song

Like I mentioned, I feel as though I really overlooked the problem that the LGBT community really had until I listened to this song. For me, I am an outsider on this issue in that I never really cared what anyone does because everyone is living their own lives so everyone can show love to whoever they what. However, America did not feel the same way I did with the laws put in place saying that same sex marriage can not happen. I felt as thought that was wrong and since I was not old enough at the time to vote I reached out to people that were, told them the situation at hand, and stated that they will make our society a better place to live.

The quotes that I found hit a note with this Padlet were the ones below:
1. "Music and politics are in essence about communication. Without over-stretching the analogy I do feel a sense of rhythm is important in getting your message across." (Charles Kennedy)
2. "The true beauty of music is that it connects people. It carries a message, and we, the musicians, are the messengers." (Roy Ayers)

Although same sex marriage is legal in the states, it is hard for these couple to be established in society. The song may be old be the message is still relevant and should still be played to remind people that equal rights to love applies to everyone
