I can imagine needing to figure out how to still have effective classroom management as we transition from activities I'm more accustomed to facilitating to activities where more groups of children (or all of the children) are moving around the classroom in energetic ways. I would want to make sure students stayed safe while doing these activities and that learning is continuing to happen (and that the class is not becoming total chaos at the expense of learning [that's the fear]). It also seems like this would be a little easier if I had my own classroom and was in control of my own space, and I'm sure it can still be done in the kids' classrooms. It will just require more flexibility of me.

I try to make my class engaging. I do try to incorporate some movement (and some days are better than others and I could definitely incorporate more). I try to make my visuals bright, vibrant and interesting. Incorporating more movement seems fairly straightforward and it's something I love to do, myself, so that should make it not too much of a challenge to make this adjustment.

When studying vocabulary (as we do in each unit), it would be really easy to have laminated flashcards on the floor of the classroom and have kids move around to the different vocabulary items in different ways (hopping, tip-toeing, jumping, slow-motion/moving like a sloth, moving like any specific animal [except maybe a cheetah; no running, please]). We'll also be studying animals in the last unit of the year in Spanish and I'm sure there are lots of opportunities there to come up with fun ways for kids to move around like animals/pretend they're hiding from animals, etc. Go Noodle is also a super easy resource that I know lots of teachers are already using (and I could as a reward, too).

The thing that stood out to me the most was the video clip of students using the movement decals in the hallway. I liked how the decals incorporated literacy and math and besides just making travel more active, they could be used to facilitate active games. It was also amazing to see the kids moving quietly and under control, even though they were being given more freedom in how they moved.

These sort of active transitions and games are something I try to incorporate at school, but I use most often when I teach summer camp. These videos were a good reminder that the activities and freedom I allow in camp, also have applications to school. The sheet about attention getters and brain activities reminded me of some activities I have tried before and some new ones I’d like to try.

Some of the examples that require more physical equipment would be a challenge because of funding and the layout of my room. I think these larger gross motor tools would be beneficial, but would require lots of explicit teaching around use and expectations.

I think the resource that could be most easily implemented was the attention getter and brain activities sheet. Most of the games and greetings were simple and engaging. Even though they require some teaching and take a bit longer than a normal gonoodle, because they incorporate gross motor movements and require active participation I think they would be more beneficial for my students. I also think using tape to make simple movement floor decals could be easily implemented.

My basic area is so small and I really like having the students move and play. I do believe "Play is really the work of children." Children develop social skills and friendships through playing and learning new activities. Things get cluttered but the students do not seem to ing it if they are involved in doing. For instance making a miniature golf course on a rectangular table out of palydoh and pencils. Or playing basketball with a small ball and hoop. Or putting on a puppet show. so space is a challenge but I put on blinders and try mybest.

I was a bit overwhelmed in a great way by all the relevant resources listed. As I went through many of them, I was struck by how movement plays a big part in brain development and academic achievement, just like movement helps children who have been exposed to trauma and adverse experiences. In most of these students, movement helps them calm down and get back in control of their emotions so that they can access the cognitive learning part of their brain. I loved the B3 Labs and classrooms that offered students items to touch, sensory items to feel, opportunities to hop and jump, crossover exercises that stimulates both sides of the brain. Allowing for opportunities for children to move periodically in school throughout the day, provides active engagement in academic learning as opposed to passive learning. Movement seems to unlock the door to taking in information and performing academically.

Since I'm usually called upon to help students calm down and learn better social skills such as how to better interact with others, I was drawn to the resources around Mindfulness and playing board games. I really liked the mindfulness breathing and touching exercises that teach students how to calm themselves down. Knowing how to understand one's own emotions and how to control them with movement and breathing is empowering for all students and helps in most social settings in the classroom. Positive flowing energy and movement opens the brain to taking risks and learning. Playing board games and learning how to play successfully with others is also very empowering for students and it reinforces positive behavior in the classroom.
