Because writing is cerebral it is perfect for reflection. Writing helps solidify thought. After introducing new content or a new concept set a timer for 2 minutes and have students write what they know/learned. Model one ahead of time so they have a clear understanding that this is a processing task. You can collect as an exit slip or it can be for personal processing only. We are more likely to remember what we write down. If you collect look for any misconceptions or misunderstandings.

Label 4 corners of the room with signs that say strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree. Ask profound/complex/analytical questions and have students think and then move to the corner that reflects their thinking. Ask a few students to explain their reasoning.
Variation: If there are students close to an equal representation on opposing sides have them discuss in a partnership or small group sharing their viewpoint as well as their reasoning.
*This promotes active listening, speaking, reflecting, reasoning, as well as engaging in conversation with differing perspectives.

As students read they use the organizer to think about what they have read. They process the information by asking the question "Is this what the text is mostly about (box)" or "Is this a detail (bullet)?" Students place the information on the organizer.
*This helps students determine importance as well as synthesize information.

After new content students write their best thinking on sticky notes and stack them in a pile on an individual square of the conversation map. One person chooses an idea to begin talking about and puts it in the center. Everyone focuses on the idea chosen and adds their thinking. When there is nothing left to talk about the group moves on to a new idea. The goal is to discuss the idea for as long as possible in a constructive manner. If someone loses focus on the topic at play one of the following prompts can be used:
- Check the center of the board
- Does what you said match this
- I'm wondering if we need to move on to the next one

Use this literacy tool to elevate students' abilities to read, write, and communicate across the disciplines. A structure strip is a simple but powerful scaffolding tool to help kids focus on organizing their thinking and written responses to prompts. The size of a large bookmark, structure strips are glued along the edge of piece of paper or interactive notebook. Each strip has specific divisions with each area representing a paragraph of the writing response.

Each division contains information and examples of what each paragraph should contain. Some examples even suggest that the amount of space in that area represents how long that paragraph should be. A body paragraph might be longer that an introductory paragraph for example.

So with the structure strip glued or taped along the edge, your kids can now respond to your prompt with the strip as a guiding scaffold.
(adapted from History Tech)
