The southern colonies right away picked up on slavery. The northern colonies did have slaves but not nearly the same as the southern plantations. By the revolutionary war, the new england colonies abolished slavery.

Upon the founding of the US, both the south and north practiced slavery. The north was the first to end slave labor, while the south had built it's entire economy on slavery.
