In our opinion, if the man and his ex-wife were to meet in person at the cafe, they would have talked about how's life going after their divorcement. Probably, David will asked about Martha's life such as "how's your husband and family doing?" As we know, Martha's husband had passed away a year ago. Martha will tell David that her husband had passed away and she has a child with her from the new marriage. David will express his condolence towards Martha and hope that Martha will stay strong cause things will get better after this. Martha will probably ask David about his life whether he still staying there or had moved to other place. She will eventually ask about David's favorite routine which is squid jigging. "Do you still squid jigging at night?" while remembering those past days. Martha will ask David if he ever wanted to move away from the old place and build a new refreshing life as they are living in a rapid changing world. David will express his thoughts about moving away and tell Martha that he would never leave that place because squid jigging has become a part of his soul and there were many memories built by them and he would rather die with the memories apart moving to the city. "No thanks I think my life is meant to be there and i'm happy with that even though I do not own much money".Other than that Martha will tell David the main reason why she wanted to see David after 10 years of not seeing each other.Martha probably will clear everything in once and do not leave anything hanging just like she did in the short story.Besides, Martha will say sorry for what she had done to David and seek for forgiveness eventhough the chance for her to be forgiven is thin.Last but not least we think that if they were really to meet in person David will volunteer himself to take a good care of Martha and her son.He believes that there's always a second chance in life and remarried Martha is the best decision after all.Probably if they meet in person we can conclude that this short story will end with happy ending instead of leaving David hanging and clueless.

Our feeling about Martha, David's ex-wife where she abandoned her child is very irresponsible. It was a silly decision for a mother to do that. Instead, a mother should take care of her son with full of love. We thought that her action abandoning her child might be because her second husband died and her condition was very bad emotionally and physically. Secondly, she might not have the ability to take care of her son by her ownself because she might not working and don't have any sources of money. So, she thought that David was the only man capable to take of her son, Davey because David really want a child. Therefore, from our explanation, as a woman, Martha should work very hard to support her own child instead of giving him to David. Martha should have thought that maybe her son felt deeply sad if he knows that his own mother abandoned him.

Yes, we think the man, David made a wise decision, taking the little boy home with him because of his ex-wife, Martha is an irresponsible person. As a mother who gave birth of her son, Davey, she abandoned her child just to fulfill her desire. Martha is describe as an irresponsible person because although she had divorced with David almost 10 years, she is shameless to ask David to take care her son. As a person who has responsibility, David made a wise decision by taking the little boy home with him.

Secondly because David is a man that easily feel sympathy to others. As you know, the child's father was passed away and his mother had abandoned Davey, so as a man that really want a child all this years, David make a wise decision to take Davey home with him and as a human being how come David does not feel sympathy and pity to the child.

Besides that,David purchased the fishing boat from his fisherman uncle 15 years ago due to no sons to inherit the boat. His wife, Martha did not speak to him for a week when she found out that he had bought the fishing boat which he called Sandakan. David used to feel lonely whenever he went to the sea because Martha never wants to endure the fun of squid jigging at night. Martha dislikes the condition with the boat bobbing gently in the night. David ask Martha's unfortunate son, Davey whether he wants to join him for squid jigging because he has no companion and no child to accompany him at home or to the sea.

In addition, David does not have children with Martha. Thus, he felt so lonely when there is no people in his house every time he went back from fishing. Actually, need a best companion for the rest of his life. Since he get married with Martha, he really desire to have his own child. The little boy, Davey gives him a chance to be a father. Because of the existence of the boy, David gives full-hearted love towards Davey.

Last but not least, the little boy, Davey has no inheritors that want to take care of him. Furthermore, Davey father had passed away a year ago. His mother, Martha had entrusted him with David as Martha knew well that David always wanted a son. Finally, David made a decision to take the little boy home with him.

We think David agreed to meet his ex-wife again because he thought that there is important thing to discuss as the way his ex-wife, Martha talked on the phone earlier. This can be seen based on page 15. "Her voice was calm but very faint." All she said was, " Come to the island, I need to see you. Please come, as soon as you can."

We also think David agreed to meet his ex-wife again because of his curiousity towards her. David agreed to meet his ex-wife to know her condition as the last time they spoke to each other was when they were with their divorce lawyers, ten years ago. He had never heard any news from her ever since. Besides, he curious about what his ex-wife want from him after a long time they did not talk to each other. This can be seen based on line, " Could it be just another stunt, a desperate cry for help?"

Lastly, David also agreed to meet his ex-wife again because he thought that Martha has changed to a better person since ten years ago. Based on line, " He found it rather absurd that his ex-wife wanted to see him again after all those years. She had made it pretty clear that she would never want to see him again. So, ten years could really change a person?" . It shows that David really thought that Martha has already changed her mind.
