Article 4: Sheep can recognize human faces

discipline: Science
Summary:In the article, sheep, as one of the animals that live in groups, utilize different methods to communication such as recognizing faces. In order to find out whether sheep can distinguish different faces, researchers in the University of Cambridge conduct a experiment by showing the sheep black-and-white photos of four celebrities in different angles to test their understandings. After the experiment, the researchers find that the animals did a “double take” looking at the stranger first, then turn to the people the familiar with. The aim of this research is to help
understand Huntington’s disease, a irreversible disease that impairs a person’s ability to walk, talk, and think, in a fundamental level. Additionally, the ethics of the approach is being considered and debated.
Response: I'm stunning to realize how significant the animals are for the improvement in science and medical areas. By testing though the behaviors of the sheep to understand the reason for sheep to know the differences between different faces could set the fundamental research for a kind of irreversible disease, which potentially increase the possibility for the people who suffer from this disease to recover, which means save their lives! This could largely encourage the people who suffer from the irreversible disease to embrace the hope of being recovered and stay optimistic to life.

DQs

1. Is there anything new you learn about the sheep after the article
2.Do you think the experiment is ethical or not? why or why not.
3.Is the research result reliable? why or why not.

This is ethical I think, and also interesting. Because it is a breakthrough that maybe one day will solve some medical confusion.
3. It is reliable obviously, because each group will test it over and over again. We all know that repetition is the best way to keep the result precise.

1. Before I read this article, I thought sheep is just sheep, a kind of livestock. However, now I learned that sheep also could be studied in order to find out the way to rescue some human's diseases.
2. Actually, I do not think this experiment is ethical. Although, the results are really important for us human being, the whole process might be a kind of torment for the sheep.
3. I think no, because the amount of study objects(sheep) is not enough.
