I think that destiny is bringing him towards his Personal Legend. When the Englishman was handing his revolver over to the leader of the caravan, Santiago was thinking about his treasure and as he got closer to Egypt, he realized, “If he pushed forward impulsively, he would fail to see the signs and omen left by God along his path. God placed them along my path” (52). - Emily

Fate because all through Santiago's journey, the omens guided him from Spain to Africa. Santiago believed in the phrase "Maktub" which means it is written. He uses this phrase a lot when he is about the make an important decision or when something happens to him. Umi Ekwueme.

I still stand by free will. At this point of the novel Santiago is going with his will and his own choices instead of something or someone making his choices. For example, it was Santiago's choice to work at the crystal shop, to make money first and then go on his journey. It was his choice to also help out the crystal merchant and help himself in the process. He also made the decision to go back to the dessert and find the treasure. All of these decisions that Santiago has been making is leading up to his personal legend and has taught his so much over the past year. So I would say free will overrides fate.

Throughout his journey, Santiago has used the crystals to help him nd the right path to nd the treasure. He trusted these crystals to take him where he needs to go without a doubt. However, as of now he hasn’t been using his free will to guide him, but using the omens. He’s not really focused on finding a path on his own and not seeing what’s going on around him, meaning he’s too focused on his journey. I wonder if this will in fact make him lose sight of his true goal.

In the novel “The Alchemist”, by Paulo Coelho, fate/ destiny is what is driving Santiago closer towards his personal legend. Throughout Santiago’s adventures, a numerous amount of unexpected events happen to him. “The boy knew what he was about to describe, though: the mysterious chain that links one thing to another, the same chain that had caused him to become a shepherd, that causes his recurring dream, that had brought him to a city near Africa, to find a king, and to be robbed in order to meet a Crystal merchant, and … The closer one gets to realizing his personal legend, the more that personal legend becomes his true reason for being, though the boy” 42. Even though Santiago has made many decisions while on his ongoing journey to the pyramids, every unexpected event that occurred has led him closer to his treasure. Yet if it were Santiago’s decision, he would never have chosen to be robbed, nor to have worked for a Crystal merchant for almost a year. However, if it weren’t for these (difficult at the time) moments, Santiago would have never been taught all the valuable life lessons he learned, nor have gotten to travel through the deserts with the Englishman. In addition, over the course of our reading, my original thoughts have changed from free will affecting Santiago’s journey, to fate/ destiny affecting his journey.
