¨Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492¨ is something you probably herd as a child. I bet they told you that he discovered America, well historically its false. The truth behind it is that Vikings arrived in America nearly 500 years before Columbus. But its alright, we have plenty of rhymes and poems about Vikings discovering America. I think Vikings should be remembered as explorers because the had the most advanced boats in their time, and they traveled far discovering and founding famous countries we know and love today.

Vikings traveled to places they had never been before and met new races and discovered different cultures. I have to say they may not have done it in the most graceful way. During that time Vikings were saw as a threat and raided churches to steal goods for themselves. But did they know any better, its almost as if we were meeting a alien species that looked different from us and talked different. You do not think we would accept them right away if at all. We all judge, its a part of who we are and vikings were simply being human with their reactions to different people. For example the Irish Chronicles reported the first Viking raid in the year 795 where they attacked three monasteries because they were simply confused because their cultures were so different. So just because Vikings were not the nicest about it they were some of the first to discover new lands with new people.

Aside from the Vikings being intelligent enough to navigate their way through rough seas and discover new places, they had the most technologically advanced ships of their time. They called them longships. Longships were different than any of the boats at that time, longships were narrow and built with thin overlapping wood. Longships were rather small even though they could carry up to about 50 men at one time. The longships being compact meant the were also pretty light. Unlike the big ships during that time these ships could get as close to land as 3 feet deep where then the men could jump out and carry the boat to shore. The wood the longships were built with allowed the boat to slightly bend so if a wave hit the ship would not break or sink.

Vikings discovered and founded lands after leaving their homes in Scandinavia in 790. In there early voyages to the north sea they passed through places like Ireland, England, and Denmark. According to ¨Viking Explorers¨ in the year 840 Viking settlers founded the modern capital of Ireland, Dublin. Leif Erikson along with his father Erik the Red were vary skilled at finding land. For example in 982, Erik the Red discovered Greenland a country we know very well today. But one of their biggest family accomplishments struck in the year 1000 when Erikson headed west to Baffin island only to travel south through Laborland where he was soon to find a land we know as Newfoundland.

To conclude this essay, Vikings should be remembered as explorers because they created advanced ships, and discovered lands we know today. Vikings could be a little rough around the edges but what matters is they were smart and had a contribution towards are geography today. So maybe its time to stop seeing Vikings as strong, scary, unaccomplished men with beards and start seeing them as brave, smart, voyagers who helped discover our world
