By the second month, your baby seems to be more interactive. It will become more aware of its body and functions. For example, 2 month olds are typically sucking their thumbs. The baby is progressively getting better at detecting particular voices, tastes, objects, and people - to which they will respond with a cry or "coo". It will also begin "tracking" - which refers to the following of movements.

Your newborn will start to remember objects if they reappear in few seconds. They will begin to cry for assistance as well as begin to recognize the mother's voice and scent. The baby is certainly more alert than birth.

At 3 months, the baby is definitely making more noticable movements. For example, it will begin to study their hands and seeking out sources of noise by moving the head and neck. Crying has probably decreased and gurgles and coo's are more predominant.

When month 4 comes around, your baby is recognizing more about objects and their actions. Your baby will begin to remember responses and may repeat actions in order to get the response they want! Detail is satisfying to them, especially when it comes to characteristics of environmental objects (pets, toys, bottles, etc.) Social stimulation is extremely important at this time as they will start using their voice in attempt to speak up. Your baby can now remember and object for 5-7 seconds.

They are using their abilities to make attempts at imitating sounds, gestures, actions, and even consonants.

Month 6 is particularly interesting due to the noticeable differences in their awareness to the environment. They seem to enjoy looking and experiencing new objects. You will often see them comparing objects like their toys too! They become more aware to the connections between the environment - for example the sounds from shaking rattles. They are beginning to utter more consonants.

By month 7, your baby is able to distinguish a lot more due to how aware they are becoming. They will begin recognizing familiar faces, and be able to determine unfamiliar ones. They are able to pick up on their name when heard, and are probably babbling at this point. Words like "ma ma" or "da da" are very common.

At month 8, your baby is able to understand about 36 words. This is also a marking point because they are making attempts to reach small goals. For example, understanding and imitating actions (dancing, hand motions, posture/gestures, and so on.) They are also just starting to follow commands if gestured properly!

They make effort to seek out hidden toys, they will remember games played previously, and are following one step commands without adult gesturing. They are responding to words like no, and are again, still getting used to instructions told by adults.
