Description:

• Set up the skill with students by letting them know that it is often helpful to think about actions, predict what might happen, and then evaluate those predictions after you act.

• Ask students when they have anticipated something and what was the result. For example, when they met a new friend, tried a new food, and read a good book.

• Explain that similarly, scientists use these skills when they make predictions with their experiments.

• Encourage students to anticipate or predict what will happen when they combine ice, salt, and water using multiple combinations of the elements and using their knowledge of the properties of each.

• Then they evaluate whether or not their hypotheses worked out.

• Reflect on the skill and the analogy between scientists making predictions in their work and predictions you make in your daily life. Let students know, similar to how they behaved like a scientist by predicting what will happen when they combined elements and evaluating their predictions, they can approach other areas of their life in the same way. Have students reflect on other areas in which they use these skills.
