After his parents divorced, at a young age Hughes was raised by his grandmother. Later when moving in with his mother in Lincoln Illinois, Hughes began writing poetry. After graduating high school, Hughes spent a year at Colombia University in New York City. New York being where most of his works were to be influenced living in Harlem many of his works played a role in the Harlem Renaissance, and held strong opinions on racial issues and injustices. Hughes condemned racism and celebrated the spirituality and culture of African Americans. May 22, 1967, Hughes, 65 years of age, died do to surgery complications and a fight with prostate cancer. The premises are the reason for accepting the conclusion. This device was used in "Park Bench" The logically related statements being, " I live on a park bench. You, Park avenue...I beg a dime for dinner- you got a butler and maid." (Hughes, "Park Bench") and the conclusion the related statements being "But I'm wakin' up!... That I maybe in a year or two, move over to Park Avenue?" ( Hughes, "Park Bench")  

Homily- A sermon or moralistic lecture. This device can be clearly seen in " I Dream a World ", the poem is full of morale, for example, " Where love will bless the earth And peace its path adorn...And every man is free." ( Hughes, " I Dream a World" )

Idealism-The practice of seeing or representing things in an ideal form rather than how they usually exist in real life. This device can especially be seen in " I Dream a World" for example "Where wretchedness will hang its head, And joy like a pearl Attends the need of man kind"(Hughes, I Dream a World") This is Hughes ideal world and is sadly, not how the world is realistically.

Contrast- The process of observing and pointing out differences. Device can be seen used in "Park Bench" When Hughes points out the differences between the two people.  " I live on a park bench. You, Park avenue...I beg a dime for dinner- you got a butler and maid." (Hughes, "Park Bench") Hughes makes sure to contrast the two people in the poem.

Avant-garde- Literature or art ahead of its time, Device can be seen in " I Dream a World", " A world I dream where black or white, Whatever race you be, Will share the bounties of the earth (Hughes," I Dream a World" ) For the time ( Circa 1930's) this was surprising to say publicly, not everyone agreed on equal rights, and Civil Rights movements didn't start becoming more prevalent and excepted until the 1960's. This in a sense was ahead of its time.

Repetition- Is a technique in which a sound  word or sentence is repeated for effect. Example in " I Dream a World" the repetition of " I dream" is used to reinforce the idea of this world he is dreaming about. " I dream a world where everyman...I dream where black or white...I dream my world!" (Hueghs, " I dream a world")

It has alot  to do with equality. Hughes, whom lived in Harlem,  in the early and mid 20th century.A time when African Americans were not treated with equality and respect. In the poem the narrotor, talks about the differences between themselves. " I live on a park bench, you Park avenue" (Hughes, "Park Bench") He is showing the privalage and difference in success and rights between these two characters. later says in his poem, " I might, in year or two move into Park Avenue"(Hughes, "Park Bench") he's showing that both of them are equal regardless of race and social status they can both achieve the same thing. is notoriously known for speaking up against racial injustice.Many of his works were important in the Harlem Rennissance in the 1920's and 30's, a cultrural explosion of the arts in Harlem. Hughes used his poetry to celebrate the culture of African Americans. Not only does he discuss racial issues, but also other issues of man " where greed no longer saps the soul" ( Hughes's, " I Dream a world"). often disscussed racial issues, and in the 1950's inspired early civil rights activists.
