The time progresses through Shane’s high school experience. Most of the time the story takes place at his new home in the city area or at a baseball field. Some of the evidence that shows this is

“Seattle housing authority. ‘So we are living in city housing?’ She looked me in the eyes. ‘Yes Shane we are’”

“My new school, Whiteman High, began an hour before Marian’s.”

The setting is important because the context shows the result after Shane’s father committed suicide. Shane’s family were wealthy they owned a giant house and many cars. Now they live in a city duplex with a single vehicle. His mother and sister even have to share a small room with each other.
