“Seattle housing authority.  ‘So we are living in city housing?’  She looked me in the eyes. ‘Yes Shane we are’”

“My new school, Whiteman High, began an hour before Marian’s.”

The setting is important because the context shows the result after Shane’s father committed suicide.  Shane’s family were wealthy they owned a giant house and many cars.  Now they live in a city duplex with a single vehicle. His mother and sister even have to share a small room with each other.

Shanes father committed suicide, and everything felt like everything would be done for Shane.

After that Shane and his family had to overcome much misfortune.  He started playing for a new baseball team, and after the season was awarded the best thing that could’ve happened.

He is mostly thinking about his dad in the beginning, and about his baseball career.  


What do you learn about the character?  

I was able to learn that Shane was still able to love his dad even though he killed himself and jeopardized his whole family.

I am pretty sure the coach thinks he is just skipping anything the coach has after a baseball game.  He thinks he is ignoring him


How do you know?  
He is not interested in what Shane has for excuses.  He just wants him to keep shut.




ACTIONS (How does the character act?) 

What things does the main character do that can reveal more about them?  

At the end of the book after beating shore lake, he receives a scholarship.  Instead of spending the time with his family he went to enjoy a party with all his teammates.  It reveals that he cares about unlike the beginning of the book where he brushed them onto the side

They said they killed himself for the sole reason of not being able to pay medical bills. The note they left behind is in the article.  Here is a part “Patricia and I had everything in life,” but “we both have medical issues, we just can’t afford the healthcare.”
