Period 7 - Dwelling Discussion by Shannon Tuttle

Click the Plus button on the right bottom to submit a response. In The Giver, they refer to their house as a "dwelling" only. Explain why you think this might be. Think about why calling your "dwelling" a home would be changed for sameness in this community.

In The Giver, I think that they only call a home a dwelling because it refers to a place someone lives. If they call it a home, it also means that the person that lives there shows emotional feelings toward the place where they feel the most comfortable. If the people called their dwelling a "home", it would counter the idea in Jonas's community, where there are no strong, human-like emotions.

I think that they call their house a "dwelling" only because maybe if they call it a "home" it will mean something special to the family that lives there, and maybe they would have strong emotional feelings to their "home". They call it a "dwelling" because the family that lives there probably would not get as attached to their "dwelling" as they would to their "house" and they probably would not get such strong emotional feelings to their dwelling as they would to their home. This would let the community have the idea of sameness because there would not be any strong emotions toward a place.

I think that the people in the community call their houses dwellings because in our world, people think of a home as somewhere with people that we love, and where we have multiple emotional connections in it. In the Giver, people can't feel emotions like love. This is where sameness comes into play. Everyone feels as if their dwelling is just where they live, which it is, but when I say home, I mean a place where i have multiple memories, and where many feelings take hold, and where my family and I live. But, in the book, it mentions that there are birthmothers, and parents recieve their children. So, technically the people who are living with you in your dwelling aren't family at all, because these people aren't related to you in any way.

They're are many different ways to call a home, which could be called many different things such as abode or living space. A dwelling doesn't seem as family-related, and more standardized to me, so this relates to the topic of 'sameness'. The so-called-leaders want everyone to keep everything the same: almost nothing unique (Except for names of course), so it would only make since to make a home seem less opening to family and more of the standard protocol.

A dwelling is simply a place where people reside. It has no connections to family or anything other than a place to spend your time there. At least that's what I believe. A home is a place of family, and every family is different. The community in the Giver strive for sameness. I believe that they call the housing units 'dwellings' for the same reason they take away feelings, and basically anything that makes a person unique.

They also might not think of it as a home and more of a gift because the might have gotten it from the elders when they had kids to take care of. If they do get a house when they have kids they might get an even bigger house if they have a second child to take care of. If I called my home a dwelling for my type of reason would be for sameness so people don't get their hopes up when they say their getting a new house so they make them all the same.

In the Giver, I think the reason the community calls where the people live "dwellings" because a home has a personal connection. When you have a home you have an emotional connection with it. You live there with your family and had made lots of memories. You feel love towards the house. With the pills, the people of the community don't feel love so they just refer to the place they live as a dwelling. Without the connection with the house, it is not a home, but only a dwelling.

I believe it is only referred to as a dwelling, because a home or house has more of a sentimental meaning. A home is a place were family live together and have a fun and loving house. However dwelling is simply a place to only live, eat, and sleep, along with little conversations that each family unit they has. For these reasons, it's is only referred to as a dwelling and not a home.
