Her largest dream is of being a doctor, but in a time period when everything is against her she will try to find a way to make things work out. Everybody helps to pitch in and make that dream possible, but Walter says that it's not a good idea because of the money that she is getting from to put her through school. A quote to show her dream is, "Who the hell told you to be a doctor?" (Hansberry 38).

Beneatha is struggling to find herself. She tries horseback riding and stopped shortly after starting. Then she took guitar lessons and moved quickly from that. Now her family is questioning whether or not to support her in her dreams of becoming a doctor because of the lack of commitment. “RUTH “The horseback-riding club for which she bought that fifty-five-dollar riding habit that's been hanging in the closet ever since!” ( Hansberry 46). She hasn’t used this helmet in quite some time, leading others to believe she is not commited.

Walter: Since Walter is Beneatha’s brother, they tend to go back and forth at each other. She brushes off whatever Walter throws at her, but doesn’t realize the the family is making sacrifices to have Beneatha go to college to follow her dream of being a doctor, not a nurse. Walter and Beneatha especially show their anger toward each other in this quote, "If you so crazy 'bout messin ' round with sick people then go be a nurse like other women"(Hansberry 38). Walter thinks that she should be doing something more womanly than studying medicine.

Ruth: Ruth is Beneathas sister-in-law that seems to have given up on her dream by the acts and speaks to Walter.Ruth teases Beneatha in the story about how she tries different activities, but quits and moves on to a new one. While Beneatha says she is trying to "express" herself, Ruth and Mama just laugh.

Mama: Beneatha shares a room with Mama, meaning they are forced to get along in their small space. Although Beneatha defends Mama by saying that the insurance money coming in for their fathers death belongs to Mama and she has the the right to spend it however she wants.

Travis: So far in the story Beneatha hasn't really shown a relationship with Travis except for the fact that she is Travis's aunt.

Joseph Asagai: Joseph is a friend of Beneatha from her college that has an original origin of Nigeria. He sees something special in Beneatha, but also thinks she still needs to find who she is.

George Murchison: George is Beneathas so called boyfriend, but Beneatha says he is to shallow and much more interested in his looks and image.

Conflict to Achieve Her Goal

Benatha has multiple problems to achieve achieve her goal. Since the time period is post World War ll, colored people along with woman did not have the same rights as a white man. Beneatha was a black woman that wanted to become a doctor. This meant that the social norm at the time was that woman could not essentially work for jobs for men. The state of her family is also bringing her down. Walter, Ruth, and even Mam don't have a lot of faith in her trying to become a doctor. Overall there is not much for Beneatha to work with. "Oh I probably will... but first im going to be a doctor, and George for one, still thinks that's pretty funny. I couldn't be bothered with that. I am going to be a doctor and everybody around here better understand that!" (Hansberry 50).
