Dan is in a very difficult situation. He has been accused by the federal of killing protesters in a riot on Idaho's capital. As the tensions grow he was nearly captured by police, and almost shot. All of this has been tracked by the media nonstop and has been twisted to make him and his friends look worse. He is hated by millions of people in america which means he has to be careful, if people know where he is, he could get arrested or worse.

Gr 8 Up — Popular high school football player Daniel Wright loves his country, so the moment he turns 17, he joins the Idaho division of the Army National Guard. Daniel is looking forward to a bright future in Freedom Lake with his girlfriend JoBell at his side; he hopes to earn enough money from the Guard to help pay for auto tech classes and eventually purchase full ownership in his deceased father's garage. When his company is mobilized and sent to Boise to help maintain the peace between protestors and proponents of the Federal ID Card Act, Daniel never imagines that people would die, that he would be the cause of their deaths, or that his future-and the future of the United States-would forever be altered. Author Reedy's first book in a planned trilogy is an action-packed look at what could happen in an America where state and federal governments are at odds with each other. Set in a not-too-distant future, the book mixes patriotism with incredible realism, creating an all-too-possible pre-dystopia. Using the enactment of a controversial law as the catalyst, Reedy effectively places the audience in Daniel's shoes as he struggles with his feelings and actions in the aftermath of the riot, and it is this first-person perspective that will resonate with readers long after the thrilling final pages. Strong characters, a fast-paced narrative, and complex questions about what it means to be an American make Reedy's speculative novel a must-read.—Audrey Sumser, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Mayfield, OH --Audrey Sumser (Reviewed February 1 , 2014) (School Library Journal, vol 60, issue 2, p111)

I agree with this book review for many reasons. First it mentions that this book is very realistic. The author really describes in detail how ceartin events happen, and how I think people would react accordingly. For example he describes how some of his friends react to the news of the shooting. No one knows that he was involved, and some like Dan's girl friend are full of hatred, calling the guardsmen murderers. While others in his class argue that they were just doing their job. He also really puts you in Dan's shoes in every event. What he thinks and how he feels makes me think about what would I do in a situation like this.

America is slowly getting divided more and more due to events that have happened. The original argument was over new controversial federal ID cards. But after the national guard units fired on protesters the anger over the cards switched to anger at the violence that occurred. When the federal government demanded that the shooters be identified and turned over Idaho refused which lead to a standoff. Finally Idaho closed off it's borders to any federal law enforcement agent and military personal. This seemed to stop the escalation of the situation, and peace talks, and reforms to the ID bill were discussed. The entire time the media tracked and twisted what actually happened, and making him hated be the public. But some treat him as a hero for defiing the federal government, these two sides are both digging in for a fight, literally and figuratively. Many hoped that it wouldn't happen, and cooler heads would prevail, until the president is assassinated. This is the point of no return, and the vice president decides to invade the rebellious state of Idaho.

Dan is part of a very large and dangerous event in history. The first person view really makes it realistic to me since the character faces problems that most teenagers have. For example he is thinking about his life after high school, that's something I do. He also really goes into describing Dan's life in great detail, and then as more and more things change, those things in life change. He gets more frustrated and worried, and you can't help but put yourself in his shoes. That's what I think is the best part of this book. The way that he makes all the events seem so real by focusing it around an easy to relate character.

The conflict starts because over a law set by the Federal Government. The conflict starts because the governor refused to adhere to the law. This brings up an issue that has been brought up before in our nation before. One respond to this issue has sending federal troops into the rebellious state to enforce the federal law. This entire scenario has been replayed in the story but it is modernized, and changed to fit a story.
