Sylvia’s aunt and her father both try to enroll her in the nearest school, but they are repeatedly told “no” and that they must send Sylvia to the Mexican school. Sylvia and her brothers have to attend the other school, which is less visually appealing then the school for white kids. However, Sylvia’s father does not give up and creates a group called the Parents’ Association of Mexican-American children. This organization eventually led to a lawsuit and ended with Mexican-American children aging equal educational rights. This book sends a powerful message about being advocates for equal education for all students.
Description of Illustrations: The illustrations in this book use the illustrator's signature illustration style with the people having large round heads.
Rationale for Recommendation: There are no historical fiction books in your current classroom library and this picture book would make a great read aloud for your class!
