One question about public speaking/debating: I don't actually have a question, rather an observation. I find it fascinating watching students develop critical thinking, as well as the ability to respond maturely to an "opponent" especially when there is no prepared text (for example - a retort to an objection.
However, I do like Chava's question - how does one get over one's fear of public speaking?

I am taking this course for the teaching purpose of helping my students gain competence in public debate, and for the personal purpose of getting the ideas to come out more quickly when I am engaged in the course of debating. I tried to teach debate with my classes years ago in an after school program in East Jerusalem, but I wasn't a qualified teacher back then and I shudder to think of what I put those kids through. I have some experience coaching debating in Australia, but there most of my students were native speakers of English and that was one less challenge to overcome. There I saw how public speaking could give students more confidence, and the chance to develop their thinking and analysis skills which will be valuable in many fields and environments. I am hoping that this course will give me more tools to incorporate debating and public speaking in my classes, especially for those students who don't yet feel confident in English. I teach a lot of classes of native speakers and I want to be able to give them something more than literature, reading and writing. I want them to be able to speak and express themselves in a mature fashion. I loved the movie The Great Debaters, especially when He stands on the chair and recites Langston Hughes.

I live in Rehovot and travel by train to a small school in Bat Yam because I had the opportunity to teach the Diplomacy & International Communications' major. This is going to be a year full of challenges as I am teaching something new and getting out of my "comfort zone", but the change is welcomed. I feel privileged to be paid to learn and pass on the feeling of empowerment to my students, that education and knowledge can give us. My name is Holly. I am an English teacher from Haifa.
Up until June, I was teaching in Elementary school (Hapatuach) and High school (Alliance) here in Haifa. The youngest were my 2nd graders and the oldest were my 11th graders. It has been quite challenging and interesting to finish a literature lesson for Bagrut purposes in the 11th grade, go to the other school, and start a cute A-B-C lesson for my little ones. I live in Kiryat Ono and teach in Yehud. This year is my first year teaching a "Dovrim" class, and I feel that if I am going to try any of the things I am going to learn in this course, I would want them to be my guinea pigs :)

I live in Lapid and teach in a High School in Modiin. I would like to learn the basics and more about debate. Debate is important to me because I love all tools that help get my students out of their flock mood and activate the "you- have- the- power- to- influence- the- flow- of- the- game" button. I teach Diplomacy at Mor High School in Modiin. I hope to acquire the tools needed to start teaching debate in my English and Diplomacy classes. I live in Elon Moreh. I teach at the Yeshiva Mate Benjamin in Beit El. I hope to learn how to improve students' communication skills and help them overcome the difficulty of expressing their points of view in a foreign language. Language learners usually translate from their native language into English keeping in mind the L1 sentences structure, which leads to word confusions and incomprehensible messages. When communicating orally one doesn't have enough time for translating. That makes the situation even worse because students don't feel self-confidant enough to start speaking at all. So, my question is whether debating can shorten the time for translating or debating can teach thinking in English.

I teach Diplomacy in the 12th grade amd my students participated last year in a very successful debate tournament. This year my students will lead a debate tournament in our school and I believe I have to make sure I know and practice all the techniques needed in order to be a good debater.
Since English is not my students' mother tongue, it is aleays a challenge to prepare students to use the appropriate vocabulary, pronounce it correctly and most importantly, be confident that they can do it.
