I live in Haifa and teach in a Waldorf high school in Kiryat Tivon. I tried to teach debate with my classes years ago in an after school program in East Jerusalem, but I wasn't a qualified teacher back then and I shudder to think of what I put those kids through. So I have some notions about debate that I am eager to compare with what we're going to learn. Basically I want to become more confident in my own debating skills and in how to teach them to students because my classes (9th to 12th grade) are usually fluent by the time they get to me, everyone has to give presentations that sometimes turn into hour long discussions and it would be great if I could introduce this as part of my 10th grade program, before we have to start literature and bagrut. I also want to use this to crush my husband when we argue.
Here's the speech that allegedly made BO president

I am Rebecca. I am currently teaching in the Nissui School in Jerusalem.

I have some experience coaching debating in Australia, but there most of my students were native speakers of English and that was one less challenge to overcome. There I saw how public speaking could give students more confidence, and the chance to develop their thinking and analysis skills which will be valuable in many fields and environments. I am hoping that this course will give me more tools to incorporate debating and public speaking in my classes, especially for those students who don't yet feel confident in English. I understand that a different model is debating is used here than what I am used to, I am wondering how the points of clarification work. I also want to know if there is an interschool debating league here as well that my students can get involved with?

I would like to share two videos. The first is the King's Speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYoSQkfrjfA
The second is Emma Watson's #HeforShe speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkjW9PZBRfk&t=2s

I'm from Moshav Maor (next to Hadera). I’ve always been intrigued with the art of debating and public speaking. My expectations of this course are, first and foremost to improve my debating and public speaking skills. I’d like to be acquainted with varied tools/ideas/ tips and techniques related to this field and even to experience it and practice it myself. In addition, I’d like to study how to develop and foster these skills in my class with my students who are non-native speakers. One more thing, mostly I’d like to know what happened behind or under the veneer of a great speaker and a fine debate. My question is: What is, if any, the creative and vulnerable side of debating and what does biology have to tell us about it? Is it and innate skill and natural affinity that one possessed or can it be acquired? Thanks for the course. Looking forward and so excited!

I teach Diplomacy at Mor High School in Modiin. I hope to acquire the tools needed to start teaching debate in my English and Diplomacy classes. I would like to learn about different debate formats and techniques. I especially like debate because it invites us to learn and research topics we do not know a lot about and look at them from many different angles. I am less attracted to the element of competition but I guess it is an integral part of it. And perhaps this would be my question: how can we make debate less about winning and more about sharing? I love public speaking especially in the form of storytelling. I am a huge fan of Brené Brown and recommend her book Daring Greatly or watching any of her TED talks:

I teach at the Yeshiva Mate Benjamin in Beit El. I hope to learn how to improve students' communication skills and help them overcome the difficulty of expressing their points of view in a foreign language. Language learners usually translate from their native language into English keeping in mind the L1 sentences structure, which leads to word confusions and incomprehensible messages. When communicating orally one doesn't have enough time for translating. That makes the situation even worse because students don't feel self-confidant enough to start speaking at all. So, my question is whether debating can shorten the time for translating or debating can teach thinking in English.

Hi,My name is Zarina Zeltser, I teach in Kfar Galim in the Hof Ha Carmel district.I take the first diplomacy course this year, and hope to teach it in the future. I believe that words are the core of a language, the units which convey meaning. Words can empower, and can lead to either a feat, or defeat. The manner these words are produced and structured is sometimes even more important. I believe that the ability to debate and speak in front of a public, is an art. My expectation from this course is to deeply understand the foundations of debate. In addition, I would like to gain proper tools and use them in a classroom, in order to teach students to become fluent, confident speakers. I don't have a specific question; the whole issue is too vague for me.

I am from Hadera, working in Emek Hefer, in a regional high school, teaching English and Diplomacy.
In this course I expect to gain tools for teaching students the art of debate firstly, then public speaking in general. I would like to learn how to teach debating systematically.
My question: How does a debater become so proficient that he can tackle questions on the spot (like in the rebuttal stage). How can one stay focused and be able to answer to claims and questions that he might not expect?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9Ihs241zeg
