During this time, there were many hardships and unfair situations presented following the Industrial Revolution and rise of Urbanization in America. A group known as the Progressives sought to alleviate these issues and make American life easier and better for all. Many of the Progressives called upon government reforms and the like. We can trace back a lot of the safety and well-being laws/reforms from the work they've put into these issues.

Progressives of the time saw huge issues with child labor and the working environments they were subjected to, along with their older working counterparts. Following this revelation, they called for strict child labor laws (which are still present today). These laws made a minimum wage a child could work as well as a maximum amount of hours a child could work. This also led to laws that required young children to be in school instead of working.

At the time, women had fewer rights than they do nowadays. People like Elizabeth Candy Stanton always looked towards Women's Suffrage. They advocated heavily and that didn't happen until way after the turn of the century. That being stated, other reforms did happen. Many protesters were abolitionists and advocated for anti-slavery reforms. After the Civil War, these protesters voices were met with the 14th and 15th Amendments that ended slavery.

Progressives saw alcohol as the cause for many of the things they were opposed to. Due to this, they were very against alcohol and attempted to limit/stop its consumption. Later on, it pressed for prohibition and laws that stopped the manufacturing, sale, and shipping of alcohol. Women were a very big driving factor for this, among the top being Frances Willard, the second president of the WCTU.

Most Progressives though that companies were too big and held too much power. Progressives of the time felt as though these large companies should have been broken up to restore competition. This led to the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. This led to debates on whether big businesses regulated the economy better or not. Eventually some Progressives looked to Socialism and, at one point, Socialism has a nation-wide following.

Progressives saw fault in the way the government ran and wanted to fix it. They wanted ways to make the government more efficient. Others saw the corruption among Government members and sought to trim out the corrupted individuals and replace them to keep a fair governing body. This led to people questioning whether their senators were corrupted and called for the direct-election amendment. In 1913 this was ratified and became the 17th Amendment to the US Constitution

The Progressives fought for better treatment and care for the sick and wounded. Medicine wasn't as advanced or reliable as it is now so Progressives pushed for changes in how medicine was made, distributed, and how potent it was. These beliefs spearheaded the Clean Living Movement. This led to education about disease, illness, and the various ways to combat them. Eventually medicine began to get better in quality, quantity, and potency.

Some countries were banned from sending immigrants to the United States. Life got even more difficult for immigrants with the Immigration Literacy Act. This act limited the amount of immigrants able to come from a specific country. This act also included an exam any immigrant over the age of 16 had to pass. It was a standard literacy test and aimed to limit the number of illiterate, mentally ill, and/or addicts and criminals. Later, the Quota Act of 1921 was passed, allowing more from each country and even allowing a very little amount of Chinese immigrants to the United States.
