This artwork caught my attention with its unique combination of shapes and objects that feel connected in a meaningful way. The little details, like the string and butterfly, make me think of how things in life are connected, even when they seem unrelated. This piece captured my heart because it reminded me that even small things can have a deeper significance, showing how different parts of life come together in ways we don’t always expect.

The butterflies in this piece symbolize growth and freedom, with their bright colors standing out against a dark background. The butterflies look like they’re flying free, which makes me feel hopeful. Knowing that the women in the jail dormitory made this, it feels even more inspiring – like no matter where we are, we can still find ways to grow and transform into something beautiful. This artwork touched me because it’s a hopeful message that stayed with me long after seeing it.

In “Mulat,” the woman’s eyes looking over the landscape really grab my attention. The cherry blossoms and the green fields give off a peaceful vibe, and the title “Mulat,” meaning “awakened,” made me think about seeing the world with fresh eyes, seeing things in a new way. This artwork captured my mind because it suggests awareness and a positive outlook on life, even in difficult times. It inspired me to appreciate the beauty around me and to remember that new opportunities are always possible.

"Panalangin" by Norman Blanco. (3rd Floor)

It actually piqued my interest when I stepped foot on the third level, along with the fragrance of coffee; I find it pleasant and amazing that there is a space inside the museum where you can breathe. This art can be used to describe praying gestures. For example, Norman Blanco described his work as textured art that interprets the contour of panalangin, or prayer movements. The artist has labeled his work as "TEXTURED EXPRESSIONISM," a type of painting, music, or drama in which the artist or writer expresses emotional experience rather than impressions of the outside world. "TEXTURE" varies freely between basic melodic lines and intricate contrapuntal textures. Texture can be generated using timbre (tone color), dynamics, and pitches.

"Mortal Enemy (Revision)" by Marko Bello. (2nd floor)

The artistic work of Marko Bello explores the inner wisdom of life and existence. He is well-known for his figure realism art, and he is able to accurately communicate his subjects' feelings. In this piece, we can see that they are both attempting to murder each other, but if we look at their expressions, we can see that the youngster clutching a red string is actually smiling, and the other kid with a long string shows no emotion. In his paintings, he takes delight in capturing shadows and lighting that bring life and character to them.

"Psalm 90:12" by Medissa Villaseñor. (5th floor)

As the title implies, "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." The supplication "teach us to number our days" indicates that we require God to explain to us the brevity of life. That revelation will help us become wiser, and wisdom is crucial because the decisions we make during our brief time on Earth have eternal repercussions. Numbering our days entails pausing on a regular basis to examine our days in light of God's methods — acknowledging the finite gift of our lives on earth and cultivating "a heart of wisdom".

MAG-INA SA MANILA

This artwork gives off a warm and loving feeling. The mother holding her child in the center, surrounded by bright colors and little details, creates a sense of kindness and care. The small village and tiny people in the background make it seem like the mother and child belong to a close community. It feels like the artist is celebrating the importance of family and tradition, showing how personal moments are part of a larger culture. There’s a gentle beauty in the way the artist shows everyday life and the connections between people.

ILUMINUS FOREST

I really like this artwork because it shows people thinking and connecting with each other. They're all different, but the rainbow brings them together, like a symbol of hope. The colors are pretty, and the picture feels dreamy and peaceful. It makes me think about how we fit into the world and how we can be at peace with nature.

LIFE ECHOES

This painting feels really powerful and emotional, almost like it’s showing someone dealing with a lot of struggle. The person’s face is hidden behind thick red lines, which make me think of something painful or difficult they’re trying to block out. The background is dark and cloudy, which adds to the feeling of heaviness, while the red lines are bold and intense, almost like they’re shouting out the person’s emotions. It gives a strong sense of someone fighting through something tough, and even though it looks a bit sad, it makes you want to understand what they’re going through.

ART CRITIQUE #1

Entitled "Mother's Love" in series 2: Mother and Child, using stoneware, size 9" × 9" × 14", and released in 2024 is an artwork by Maria Magdamit. The sculpture captures a mother and child inextricably woven together. It perfectly embodied the love of the mother; it has cracks, it’s firm, it’s textured, it’s complicated, but it’s secure. It precisely depicts the relationship between a mother and child. It’s not perfect, yet it evokes warmth, leaving a lasting impression and a mutual interconnectedness of understanding to my senses, that, while a mother’s love is filled with complications and intricacies, their love will always remain a solid foundation of our characters and how our love and theirs are constitutive. Additionally, the drowsiness intact in the mother’s eyes and the angle as if she is looking up depict her emotion stemming from how being a mother is diverse. It encompasses both physical effort, when they’re carrying us, and emotional effort, when they are faced with their emotions and changes during their journey of motherhood. The artwork conveys a message to exert extra effort—not solely to perceive and interact with them depthlessly, but to appreciate and cherish every moment with them as often as we can, as the time they have in our grasp is boundless and a golden privilege not everyone gets to experience.

ART CRITIQUE #2

"Tagpi-tagping Pangarap" is an artwork by R2 Tolentino, mixed media, sized 36" × 38", and issued in 2024. The artwork showcases different art materials, such as paint and various types of cloth. Tagpi-tagping Pangarap perfectly encapsulates the double struggle our aspirations endure; it showcases how our dreams were derived from a number of reasons, role models, and experiences. Therefore, it elucidates how these dreams are piled up with different types of cloth coupled with a mess of paint. On the other hand, the journey—aside from the representation of backgrounds—also showcases how, in attaining a dream, it involves more than just the foundations; it is the compromise of yourself and the help of others as well in order to achieve them. It serves as a reminder that, from the intricate places, individuals, and homes of wisdom where our dreams take root, attaining a dream is not a linear journey. What’s important is that we show compassion and offer love to ourselves as often as we can, and trust that every decision, individual, environment, and experience from where these dreams came, will arrive us to the destination we desire and aspire.

ART CRITIQUE #3

"Life in a Coastal" is a craft created by male prisoners at BJMP Lipa City Jail using wood and metal, size 15" × 8", and publicized in 2024. The craft showcases the detailed presentation of a kubo or silungan (a traditional hut); it includes the wood, the metal roof (yero), and the electric posts. Aside from the authentic presentation of coastal architecture, what stands out the most to my senses—upon reading the description of the piece—is the craftsman. The artwork depicts more than just an authentic representation of culture; it evokes an emotional message as well, emphasizing the longing of inmates to experience life beyond the four corners of their cell. It leaves a profound impression to optimize life and be grateful, as not everyone experiences a life synonymous with everyone else.

"Inang Perlas" By: Anita Del Rosario

This figure caught my attention because of how impressive each part of this artwork is. The said artwork "Inang Perlas" by Anita Del Rosario immediately captivates with its unique blend of materials and forms. The artist's skillful use of shell or mother-of-pearl (that speaks for the title itself), combined with the elegant lines of the metal framework, creates a striking visual contrast. The flowing, almost ethereal quality of the shell pieces is juxtaposed against the rigid structure of the metal, suggesting a delicate balance between fragility and strength. The inclusion of the small dish with bananas adds a touch of whimsy and unexpected detail, further enhancing the artwork's intriguing character. The overall effect is a piece that is both beautiful and thought-provoking, inviting closer examination and contemplation of its symbolic meaning.

"Mortal Enemy" By: Marko Bello

Immediately grabs my attention through its dramatic use of color and composition. The vibrant red and white paint, seemingly erupting from the figures' heads, creates a powerful visual impact. The obscured faces and the dynamic energy of the brush strokes suggest a struggle or conflict, while the contrasting colors could symbolize opposing forces or ideologies. My own interpretation about the meaning of this artwork is that, two people are trying to harm each other by setting their mortal enemy on fire. But what they do not realize is that, they'll be harming or creating damage to themselves in the process. I realized that we always have to keep in mind to think about our actions before doing it, as it may cause our own downfall.

"Working in Progress" By: Jay-R Malig

Is striking for its unconventional presentation. The torn, layered canvas immediately draws my eye, as it represents a sense of incompleteness and dynamism. The glimpse of the yellow construction vehicle within the tear suggests a process of revealing or uncovering, hinting at the layers of work and effort involved in the said creation. The use of the torn paper technique adds a textural element, making the piece feel both fragile and powerful. The overall effect is a captivating visual metaphor for the ongoing nature of artistic creation and the journey of self-discovery, and progress. This piece reminds me that even a tear or disaster doesn't always mean a bad thing. Sometimes, it is needed to make improvements and changes.

In my opinion and understanding the painting is actually saying that sometimes your mortal enemy is someone who is closer to you and they will say a lot of things behind your back. In order for you to be free or to grow, you have to let them go especially if it is not healthy for you anymore.

"Chaos"

This painting gives a deep meaning where it reminds us that chaos can be overwhelming but at the end of the day it will give you a beautiful ending.

🖌️SIPAT

I get what the artist is going for here, but as an animal lover, this painting just makes me feel a little sad. I mean, that person looks so intense, about to shoot their bow at that poor animal in the background. The colors are really striking and the way they've drawn everything is super skilled, but I just can't help but worry about that creature. I know hunting and stuff like that is part of some cultures, but my heart is just too soft for that kind of thing. Still, I can appreciate the artistry and the way it makes you think about the relationship between humans and nature. There's this complicated relationship shown, where people can have a big effect on the animals around us, whether it's helping them or hurting them. The artist seems to be exploring that balance, and it's definitely a thought-provoking piece.

🖌️WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DISASTER BY ARVIN MANUSIG

This painting shows a strong-looking woman with a crown of stars on her head. She has a serious expression on her face and is standing up tall, like she's ready to take on anything. The city buildings in the background are colorful and tall, making the whole scene feel powerful and impressive. It seems the artist is trying to show how women can be brave and determined, even when things get tough. The woman's pose and the way she's painted makes her seem like a hero or protector. Even though I don't know much about art, I can tell this painting is meant to inspire people and remind them of the strength women have.

🖌️DAYANG ASU BY HERMINIALIDO PINEDA

There's this big, red animal-looking thing that almost looks like it's made of fire. They've got this really intense, confident expression, like they're the ruler of this place. The colors are so bright and vivid. The sky is this deep, moody blue with these awesome, fluffy clouds swirling around. And the mountains in the background look so dramatic and mysterious, like they're hiding all kinds of secrets. I think the artist is trying to show how strong and brave people can be, even when facing something difficult. The person on the animal looks ready to take on anything, which is pretty inspiring.

These three meaningful portraits grabbed my attention and made me observant in what the meaning of those was.

🖼️: MULAT

This meaningful painting really grabs my attention. It is entitled "MULAT" or "Awakened." This shows that in life, we may face different challenges, but there is always a positive that will happen in the end. It also depicts a person being open to their surroundings and giving importance to what is happening by not being ignorant.

🖼️: Wall of Heroes

When I entered the museum, I saw the frame of the people who fought for the country. The heroes that sacrificed their lives in order to serve the people and protect our territory. It shows the hardships of every person who did their part with all their sweat, blood, and tears for us to have freedom and be free from the hands of colonials.

🖼️: Inang Bayan

Others may see this artwork as a mother who's carrying her son. But for me, it has a different meaning. The mother is represented by a female politician who has good intentions for the country. Who brings hope amidst the darkness and a woman who is there in the middle of chaos. While the child that is carried by a woman represents the people of the country. A woman is capable of being a leader and can uplift the lives of everyone and change the landscape of the country. She possesses a good attitude that will benefit the betterment of her fellow countrymen.

1. "Sana sa Makalawa" By R2 Tolentino

- R2 Tolentino's "Sana sa Makalawa," also known as "The Day After Tomorrow," captured my heart and mind for its beautiful representation of the Filipino people's resilience and hope for a better future despite facing challenges. This mixed-media artwork reflects the pursuit of hope and a brighter tomorrow. By using a combination of materials such as paint, recycled objects, and textured layers, it symbolizes the struggles and aspirations of the Filipino people as they navigate present difficulties while looking ahead. The use of elements like the Philippine flag, a boat, and waves adds depth and meaning, illustrating how people can rebuild and move forward despite adversity. The artwork's layers and textures bring it to life, reminding us to remain hopeful and resilient, inspiring optimism in the face of challenges.

2. Through symbols and imagery that celebrate diversity, unity, and fairness, the artwork promotes inclusivity and harmony. "Tagpi-Tagping Pangarap" By R2 Tolentino

- "Tagpi-Tagping Pangarap" by R2 Tolentino, also known as "Patchwork Dreams," captured my attention, heart, and mind with its unique and captivating patchwork style. Using layers of materials like fabric scraps, paper, and paint, it resonates deeply—not only visually but also emotionally—by conveying a powerful message of inspiration. This mixed-media artwork symbolizes resilience, hope, and perseverance. It illustrates how people piece together their dreams, showing that even small or seemingly insignificant contributions add to the bigger picture. Despite life’s challenges, experiences, and successes, these fragments shape who we are and can be reshaped into new forms of beauty. The patchwork style creates a distinctive composition that beautifully conveys the strength of the human spirit, reflecting the beauty of overcoming struggles and building a brighter future. It reminds us that even the broken or fragmented pieces of our lives can form a cohesive whole when nurtured with care and determination.

For this task, I picked three art pieces from the The Manila Clock Tower Museum we toured personally that grabbed my interest in a way and for numerous reasons. Here's why I chose each piece:

BAHURA 05 - Reef Series 02 by Patrick Naval

Its use of stainless steel, molave, and granite particularly influenced my decision, as did nature mythology portrayed By this artwork. It referenced materiality and the design made me think of the majesty and vulnerability of the ocean. That is what made me think of how art can be used to remind people to protect their environment more especially given the fact that we live in a country surrounded by water bodies.

Standing Tall II by David Rauilme

This piece surprised me because this piece looks so much like the Manila City Hall Clock Tower which represent strength and pride of our city. This made me realize how art can capture the landmarks and cultural personality of a place when I saw it done here in this artwork. It is a rather strong message to cherish and be proud of the place or origin.

Amnesia by Dan Henry Canalita

What caught my eye in this piece was the phrase "Forget Me Not" and the note beneath it: He remembers nothing except the woman he loves. It was very touching and beautiful, as it depicted how love may withstand the occasions of forgetting or losing somebody. This piece of art work is perfect in illustrating human memory and emotion and it made me to have far more questions regarding the events behind the artwork.

🖼️ "TAGPI-TAGPING PANGARAP" by R2 Tolentino

Everyone doesn’t get the same in life, and that’s why we often say, "Life is unfair," because it’s true. Some people have so much, while others have to give everything just to survive. That’s what this painting made me think of. It shows colorful patchwork houses made from all kinds of patterns, and it reminded me of how people use whatever they can find to create something meaningful. This happens in life, where so many people are struggling but still trying and trusting themselves not to lose their goal or purpose. I can relate to this artwork, titled, "Tagpi-Tagping Pangarap" (Patchwork Dreams). For me, it's about hope and perseverance. It shows the struggles and aspirations of people striving to build a better life despite the challenges. This painting presents a powerful message, reminding us that even in the face of obstacles and difficulties, people can still dream and work towards a brighter future.

🖼️ "NO POVERTY II" by Dino Blanco

In a world where wealth and progress are often celebrated, poverty remains a serious problem that affects millions of people. Poverty is not just about a lack of money; it also means missing out on basic needs, opportunities, and dignity. Despite the progress in some areas, many families still struggle every day to survive. This painting touched my heart because it shows the reality of poverty through a mother and her children. It highlights their hardships, strength, and hopes for a better life. The image speaks to the challenges faced by families who have little but still try to move forward.

For me, this artwork is more than just a picture; it carries an important message. It reminds us of the unfairness in our world and the need to help those in need. It encourages us to take action to reduce inequality and create a world where everyone has access to basic needs and the chance to live with dignity and hope.

🖼️ "SANA SA MAKALAWA (HOPE, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW)" by R2 Tolentino

This painting touches my heart because it reminds me that even if today is a bad day, tomorrow can be better. Life is unpredictable, and we never know what will happen, but this painting shows the power of hope and strength. The flowing cloth, which looks like the Philippine flag, represents the country's spirit and the strength inside each of us. The rough waves below show life's challenges, but the small paper boat teaches us to keep going, even when things are tough. The golden sun shining through the clouds gives me hope, reminding me that even if today is hard, tomorrow can be better. "Sana Sa Makalawa" reminds me how important it is to believe in hope and that after every struggle, a brighter day will come.

MENTIFACTIO by Krishnamurti

‌ As I went upstairs to the second floor and stroll around, the moment I saw this painting, it got me saying "THIS IS MY PAINTING". I didn't know its meaning yet, but the man that looks like a jester and the tower which I presumed as the Tower of Babel that is on his head were the elements that got me. But as I browse for the meaning of MENTIFACTIO, I had a more understanding of this painting and I oved that my presumption about the tower was right.

Mentifact means the shared ideas, values, and beliefs of a culture. So in relationship with the Tower of Babel on his head, the cursed that struck people there forced them to move away and this led to the development of different beliefs, culture, tradition, understanding, values and ideas. And maybe this represent the man or the "jester". Aside from their playfulness, jesters are also known to be free, socially aware, and creative; with this he can share all his ideas that he gathered through socializing and interacting to everyone he encounters and in exchange he will also get ideas and beliefs from them. And this ideas will be stacked just like the floors in the Tower of Babel.

ARTIST PLEA: Painting Series by NeMiranda

‌ As I walked into the space where these paintings are located, I didn't notice it right away because they were displayed on the floor and not hung on the wall. But as I look around, the dark and sad atmosphere in these paintings pulled me towards them and I looked closer. As I saw the artist plea saying "Stop Violence Against Mankind and Mother Earth" I knew that this will be one of my favorites. It is a series of painting that revolves around the MArawi War in our country during 2027. In the paintings, there are illustrations of mosque burning, guns, fire, explosions, victims of the war, and more.

As an advocate of children rights and the betterment of our environment, this painting moved me to do better and use my voice to inform everyone, especially now that it is relevant, there are wars in different parts of the world and we should partake in the movement to stop the violence, not just in our country but also in different nations. In addition to that, we should take care of our home and it should not be a place for war, it should not be place where we let negativity and all this chaos and anger foster. All in all, this painting series caught my attentiion and moved my heart to take actions and spread awareness about this devastating events.

BATTLE IN MACTAN

‌ This painting captured both my heart and my mind because I love the energy that this painting was giving. Even though with its dark aura, it gave me a sense of relief and pride as a Filipino. This painting shows the battle in Mactan, Cebu when Ferdinand Magellan fought with Lapu-Lapu. The reason why I chose this painting because it showed how brave Filipinos are and how brave and driven we are when we are fighting for something. It kind of give me hope and a message that I can fight too for myself, for others, and for my homeland.

“TAGPI-TAGPING PANGARAP” by R2 Tolentino

At first, this painting caught my attention because it wasn’t flat. I was drawn to the textures and how skillfully they were created. But when I saw the title, Tagpi-tagping Pangarap, that’s when it truly touched me. It felt messy and chaotic, yet in its own way, everything made sense. The chaos somehow conveyed a deeper meaning, making the piece even more powerful.

“LIWANAG SA DILIM” by BJMP Manila City Jail Female Dormitory

This part of the museum really stood out to me, especially because it showed how people weren’t as cruel as I thought. They gave those in prison an opportunity to express their feelings and thoughts. One painting that particularly captured my heart was Liwanag sa Dilim. It depicts a mother who, despite the darkness and struggles she’s faced, finds a glimmer of light. Her expression is a mix of pain and hope, symbolizing her strength. The components and details in the painting seem to reflect her journey, where even in the hardest times, there’s still room for hope and a sense of peace. It’s a powerful reminder of the strength people can find, even in the most difficult circumstances.

“CHAOS” by Sansawi.

"Each layer tells a story, revealing hidden depths within the seemingly random strokes." These words, written on a small paper beneath the painting, really spoke to me. They captured something deep and personal, as I’ve created something similar myself. Looking at the piece, I knew those strokes weren’t just random. They represented so much more—frustration, guilt, anger, and a mix of emotions that build up inside a person over time. It’s as if each layer reflects a different feeling, a different part of the journey, all tangled together but still creating something meaningful. The painting isn’t just messy or chaotic, it’s a raw expression of inner struggle, a way of showing how emotions can shape who we are.

With so many poor individuals and families, the cycle of deprivation, lack of education, malnutrition, and limited access to healthcare does not end. This painting is close to my heart because it depicts the true reality of life. If only we can solve poverty, we can create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, thus achieving "no poverty" requires effort and commitment from different sectors of society. Together, we can create a future free from poverty, marked by equality, dignity, and shared progress.

Every Color II by Norman Francis Juban Blanco

My life is like a canvas painted with countless colors, each representing experiences, heartbreak and challenges that makes me who I am today. From the bright hues of joy to the shades of pain and loss that contribute to my existence.

From bright colors, it symbolizes the moments I have in my life where I am happy, full of hope and love, and yellow reminds me of sunrise, which means a new beginning.

Of course, life is not complete without its darker sides. The pain, failure, and grief we have once experienced. The blues and greys remind me of the fragility of life and the strength and courage it took me to overcome it.

Just like the artist who uses neutral colors that represent peace and reflection. I also have moments when life slows down that allows me to reflect and pause, and by these moments I find my purpose and tranquility within myself.

Like every color, life is not always a rainbow but a blend of experiences that shaped who we are today.

Kabataan Para Sa Kinabukasan by R2 Tolentino

"Ang Kabataan ang Pag-asa ng Bayan." Indeed, youth are the heroes of today's age.

The statement above by Dr. Jose Rizal serves as a reminder of the important role of youth in shaping the future of our country. Despite the challenges of modern times, the belief remains that the youth will serve as a light and guide us towards a more prosperous society. Their strength, intelligence, and enthusiasm are the backbone of our dreams for a better future.

I remember myself campaigning for Leni Robredo in 2022 for the presidential position along with Kiko Pangilinan and the whole Tropang Angat. This is the time I feel that we will have the good governance we always yearn for. Lots of youth are encouraging everyone to vote for the leader who has compassion for Filipinos for us.

As a youth, I believe we have the power to end the cycle of corruption by being politically aware. As quoted by Leni Robredo, "Ang namulat, 'di na muling pipikit. Hindi na natin kailanman hahayaang matulog muli ang pag-asang nagising.”

“SANA SA MAKALAWA (HOPE, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW)” by R2 Tolentino

Mixed Media

16

36" × 48"

2024

This work of art presents resilience and hope in adversity. At the center is the dynamic presentation of the movingness or fluidity and textured pattern of what could be a Philippine flag representing one's national identity and pride. The presentation is reflection of a struggle and determination in a fight.

The background is full of stormy waves and subdued grey skies indicating challenges and hardships. However, the flag remains alive and well towards the horizon with hope and strength amidst uncertainty. The sunny rays in the corner, golden, give an impression that better days await ahead.

The red line cutting through the composition can perhaps symbolize a threshold or a boundary, even a division of struggles in the present moment and hope for the future. The painting well captures the resilience of a nation and its unwavering belief in better days ahead.

DAYANG ASU

Herminigildo Pineda

Oil on Canvas

24” × 24"

2023

This painting, by Herminigildo Pineda, is rich with symbolism and evokes a sense of cultural and historical narrative. The composition features a hybrid figure of a dog with human-like elements, a skeletal body, and a crowned head, suggesting themes of power, labor, and perhaps exploitation or decay. A figure riding the hybrid creature adds a layer of human involvement in this allegory. The backdrop of a serene landscape, dominated by a volcano and vibrant skies, contrasts sharply with the unsettling foreground.

The phrase "Gabun ding Pantos at Marangal" (Earth of the Wise and Honorable) connects the imagery to Filipino identity and heritage, possibly reflecting on themes of colonization, resilience, or the price of progress. Its surreal and layered imagery provokes thought about the balance of power, the relationship between nature and humanity, and the struggle for dignity amidst challenges.

This painting captures attention because of its striking visuals and the cultural narrative it evokes. It encourages deep reflection on societal values and historical truths.

Amnesia

Dan Henry Canalita

Acrylic on Canvas

18 × 24

“He remembers nothing except the woman he loves.”

This is Amnesia by Dan Henry Canalia, which seems to express a disjointed and surreal image of memory loss and love. It represents a composition using several overlapping faces and objects that symbolize disjointed fragments of memory.

The phrase "Forget me not" visible in the painting reinforces the theme of remembering, perhaps hinting at the struggle to hold onto specific memories, especially of a loved one. Traffic lights, cross, and other elements such as a window or distorted textures suggest confusion, crossroads, and fleeting clarity.

Both pain of forgetfulness and the power of love last, as the description tells him, he remembers nothing except the woman he loves. The face of a woman is there highlighted in the parts of painting, symbolizing the anchor in his fractured reality: one of the unforgettable people amidst the chaos of lost memories.

Our visit to the Clock Tower Museum felt like stepping into another dimension, surrounded by the incredible artworks that filled the space. Among all the pieces, three particular paintings stood out to me as I wandered through the gallery. Observing them, I came to realize that these paintings reminded me of the complexities of life, how every shade and blend contributes to the bigger picture, just like every moment and experience shapes our reality.

🖼️ "Balansi" by Glenn Sarrano

The first artwork that captured my attention is Glenn Sarrano's "Balansi." At first glance, the vibrant yellow hues immediately drew me in, and I initially mistook its abstract design for bubbles floating against a cracked wall. However, as I spent more time observing it, the deeper concept revealed itself—the delicate act of maintaining balance in life. In my own life, I see the bubbles as representing moments of both struggle and joy—times when I feel overwhelmed but also moments when I find unexpected delight. Balancing these experiences is like keeping the bubbles afloat: delicate yet rewarding when you succeed. Recognizing their fragility and beauty reminds me to cherish the little victories and stay grounded, no matter what life throws my way. For me, "Balansi" is a visual metaphor for the constant juggling act we all face. It reflects the struggles of balancing various aspects of existence—emotional, physical, social, and spiritual—amidst life’s inherent chaos. The background, with its mix of calm and chaotic elements, represents external forces that impact our internal equilibrium. It serves as a reminder that balance is not about eliminating challenges but about learning to navigate them with resilience and grace. This resonates deeply with my own life. As a student juggling responsibilities, like academics, extracurricular commitments, and other personal matters, the concept of balance is something I strive to achieve every day. Just like the painting illustrates opposing forces—peace and turmoil, success and failure, joy and sorrow—I’ve realized that true harmony lies in finding a middle ground between these extremes. "Balansi" tells its audience to reflect on the importance of moderation and mindfulness. It reminds me to take a step back, evaluate what matters most, and ensure that I’m not just surviving but thriving in all aspects of my life. It's a powerful reminder that even amidst chaos, balance is achievable if we remain grounded and intentional.

The next two artworks, which I believe are assemblage paintings, immediately caught my attention and filled me with excitement as I took in their entirety. The ones I always look forward to encountering, as they spark both inspiration and awe with their intricate details and creative composition. Tolentino’s works often feature a mix of realism and abstract expressionism, allowing viewers to feel both the tangible struggles and the emotional weight that surrounds us.

🖼️ "Sana sa Makalawa" by R2 Tolentino

R2 Tolentino’s masterpiece, "Sana sa Makalawa", eloquently reflects themes of hope, longing, and the anticipation of a brighter future. This artwork captivates with its profound emotional depth and masterful storytelling, brought to life through its vivid visual elements and compelling composition. In my observation, the cloth in the artwork represents the Philippine flag, fluttering against the force of turbulent waves. Dark clouds loom in the sky, symbolizing stormy times and adversity. Yet, in the midst of this chaos, the sun emerges, steadfast and radiant, serving as a beacon of light and hope. No matter how overwhelming the darkness, there is always light to guide us toward a better tomorrow. The sun, prominently featured, embodies resilience and unwavering optimism. The turbulent sea reflects the struggles and challenges we face, but the imagery assures us that, regardless of the storm’s intensity, hope remains. It’s a reminder that through trust, perseverance, and unity, we can rise above adversity and move toward a brighter future. This painting resonates deeply, not only as a personal reflection but also as a collective narrative of resilience. It inspires viewers to introspect on their aspirations and struggles while echoing a shared longing for progress and fulfillment—whether in personal endeavors, societal advancement, or the broader human experience. Tolentino’s work serves as a stirring reminder that hope and light persist, even in the darkest of times, urging us to continue striving for the promise of a better “makalawa” (day after tomorrow).

🖼️ "Tagpi-tagping Pangarap" by R2 Tolentino

Third artwork is, "Tagpi-tagping Pangarap" which also created by R2 Tolentino. The artwork features different fabrics stitched together, forming a structure resembling a humble barong-barong (shanty) in the middle of an estero (urban waterway). From my perspective, it conveys a powerful message: even in the most challenging circumstances, no matter how many obstacles life throws your way, there is always a chance to achieve your dreams. This piece resonates deeply, as it symbolizes resilience and resourcefulness. The patchwork design, which at first glance might appear like random scraps used to cover mistakes, serves as a metaphor. It reminds us that imperfections can be mended and transformed into something even better. Mistakes, like the patched sections in the artwork, can be opportunities to create new and improved ideas—proof that growth and progress are always possible, even from humble beginnings. I love the whole artwork, each details tells a message that reflects the fragmented and challenging journey of dreams, particularly in the context of Filipino culture and societal struggles. The painting likely portrays individuals or symbols representing broken or incomplete aspirations, possibly focusing on marginalized communities or individuals how dreams can be pieced together, striving to achieve their goals despite hardships. It depicts through torn or incomplete images, patchwork effects, or broken lines. The painting invites viewers to reflect on their own dreams and challenges, evoking empathy for those whose aspirations remain unfulfilled but are still pursued with unwavering determination.

Rene Tolentino's reflective piece "Sana sa Makalawa" (Hope, The Day After Tomorrow) embodies optimism and fortitude in the face of hardship. This art piece shows hope in life. The hope that the struggling Filipino’s one day over come their problems. Just like how the boat wants to overcome every waves that comes, and hopes the day after tomorrow the sea will calm. This also is the biggest impactful piece I saw in museum as the texture of the fabrics makes it more unique as a painting.

"Mortal Enemy" by Marko Bello delves into the complexities of internal conflict, duality, and the ongoing struggle between the self and external forces. The artwork depicts a profound and never-ending conflict, which is commonly interpreted as a fight between good and evil, one's own identity and society expectations, or internal conflicts within one's own mind. This painting prompts us to reflect on our own issues and how we interpret them. This painting depicts our inner battles as individuals.

The artwork "Keeping the Faith" by Franklin Dana examines themes of tenacity, spirituality, and the resilience of the human spirit. The artwork is viewed by many as a representation of perseverance and optimism, highlighting the strength of clinging to one's beliefs or inner strength in the face of adversity. Whether it is based on spirituality, individual beliefs, or universal ideas like justice and love, this faith acts as a compass. The picture invites viewers to reflect on their own faith and how it enables them to face the uncertainties of life.

Every Color

This painting titled "Every Color" caught my attention even though it looks simple. The composition has a textural quality since the colors are layered and blended, but there are still noticeable clumps or "blobs" of color. Overall, there is a sense of vitality and energy that might refer to a cosmic event, a growing flower, or a colorful undersea scene. There are several possible interpretations because the shapes are not well defined. The emotive effect of color and texture appears to be the artist's first priority over representational accuracy. It creates feelings of joy, excitement, and possibly even wonderment.

“Silent Sanctuary” by Janet Arbolleda-Baceller

This painting caught my eyes because of its color scheme and the butterflies itself. In my own perspective, this symbolises us living in our society and country. It depicts different stories and struggles. I like this painting because it's an image of a woman. She is wearing a mantle that incorporates the red, blue, and white of the Philippine flag, implying a link to Filipino identity and perhaps patriotism. She has a serious, even serious, pose. Her hands, which seem to be holding ash or dark, crumbling earth, are the most remarkable feature. This particular feature, along with the background cityscape, indicates themes of environmental destruction, social problems, or maybe the weight of a country's challenges.

This painting might look simple for others, but if you delve into it and understand it, you'll appreciate the young person in the painting with a thoughtful expression.

It seems to represent the power of knowledge and the role of youth in shaping the future. The overall composition feels both hopeful and contemplative.

Looking at this painting, I felt inspired and intrigued. The juxtaposition of colors and textures invites reflection on the importance of nurturing the younger generation, emphasizing their potential to create change and preserve cultural identity.

💫 SANDUGO "Assertionism Epilogue Exhibit" by Sherwin Paul-Gonzales

Upon walking up stairs, this painting also captured my interest as it has the combination of dark and light colors, and the people in it made me curious about them. As I look more towards the painting, it makes me realize that it is a powerful and evocative piece since it captures a historical and cultural moment with a raw, expressive style. The figures are depicted with intense expressions, suggesting a scene of negotiation or ritual.

The composition is rich with symbolism, possibly reflecting themes of unity, conflict, or cultural exchange. The detailed attire and objects hint at a blend of indigenous and colonial influences, creating a dialogue between past and present.

I felt a sense of interest because it invites contemplation on the complexities of history and identity, evoking emotions of both tension and connection.

💫 "MOTHERS LOVE" Mother and Child Series 2 by Maria Magdamit

When I saw this sculpture, I felt very connected with it given that it is a mother that looks like she is hugging her child. It made me remember the female energy that I grew up with; the warmth and support they gave me reflected on how I see the sculpture. The curves of the mother’s figure seemed to cradle not just her child but also the very essence of nurturing, embodying the unconditional love that has been a guiding force in my life.

The sculpture became a vessel for my memories, evoking images of laughter shared, tears dried, and the countless moments of reassurance that shaped my understanding of strength and resilience with the help of my mother. It was as if the artwork was inviting me to embrace my past, reminding me that the bonds of love and support are not only foundational but also transformative, illuminating the path for future generations.

Here are the 3 paintings that especially stood out to me:

📍"Amnesia"

by Dan Henry Casilla

📍"Perla"

by Rene Tolentino

📍"Life stages"

by Marko Bello

🖼️ "Amnesia" by Dan Henry Casilla

When I enter the small room on the 3rd floor, this painting is the first thing that catches my eye. It features a drawing of a man's eyes, and the longer you stare at them, the more they seem to convey a sense of loss, which is fitting considering he has amnesia. Additionally, the text in the painting reads "Forgot Me Not," and the note beneath it, along with the painter's name, states, "He remembers nothing except the woman he loves." The combination of the haunting eyes and the emotional message creates a powerful and evocative image that lingers in the mind. It makes one wonder about the story behind the man and the woman he holds dear, and how their love endures despite his memory loss. The painting serves as a reminder of the fragility of memory, the strength of the human spirit and the power of true love.

🖼️ "Perla" by Rene Tolentino

This painting truly captivated me with its innovative use of real fabric for the headwrap, adding a striking textural element that elevates the artwork beyond the canvas. The woman's eyes, full of power, strength, and bravery, like it's telling a story of resilience. She's like a warrior woman who has faced countless battles in life, yet continues to survive and thrive. These experiences haven't broken her; instead, they've forged her into the strong, independent woman she is today. The contrast between the vibrant headwrap and the darker elements on her face adds another layer of complexity, hinting at the challenges she's overcome. The painting is a testament to the enduring strength of the human spirit and a celebration of female empowerment.

🖼️ "Life stages" by Marko Bello

This artwork immediately resonated with me because of its relatable portrayal of a man, seemingly around my age, navigating life's challenging phases. He appears to be struggling, overwhelmed by whatever he's facing. His posture speaks volumes; it's a silent scream of internal conflict. The painting captures that feeling of being caught in an unstable emotional current, unsure of how to proceed. It's a powerful reminder that life inevitably presents us with moments of self-doubt and uncertainty—times when we question our path and grapple with difficult emotions. The abstract elements above his head beautifully represent the chaotic nature of these internal struggles, mirroring the internal confusion many of us experience during life's transitions. It's a piece that validates those feelings, reminding us that we're not alone in our struggles.

These are the art pieces that captivated my heart. The first two pieces of visual art by R2 Tolentino were just not beautiful, but they also offered you hope. The first piece is titled "Tagpi-Tagping Pangarap." As you can see, he used several fabrics to add color to the artwork. It appears to me of every person's different dream as they grow older. It may be diverse, but when united, it forms a lovely artwork. The second piece of art is titled "Sana sa Makalawa." To me, this depicts every Filipino who is striving to survive and yearning for a better tomorrow."Life Stages" by Marko Bello. From the title itself, you can clearly know what it is.

"Chaos" by Sansawi

• "Chaos" by Sansawi is a breathtaking explosion of color and emotion. The raw, untamed energy of the paint strokes is captivating. It feels like a visual representation of a storm, both terrifying and beautiful. The handprints around the edges add a personal touch, suggesting a struggle, a fight against the chaos itself. It's messy, unpredictable, yet strangely comforting. It speaks to the inherent beauty found in imperfection, the power of letting go and embracing the unknown. It's a piece that resonates deeply, reminding me of the times I've felt overwhelmed, yet ultimately found strength and beauty within the chaos.

"Serenity" by John Pascua

• "Serenity" by John Pascua is a stunning portrait. The cool blues and the woman's calm expression evoke a sense of peace and tranquility. Her closed eyes and soft lips suggest a deep inner calm, a stillness that's both beautiful and enviable. The contrast between the cool blues and the pop of red on her lips is striking, drawing attention to her serene face. It's a painting that speaks to a quiet strength and inner peace, a feeling that's both rare and deeply comforting. It's a reminder to find that quiet space within ourselves, amidst the chaos of life. It's a beautiful and moving piece.

"What A Beautiful Disaster" by Arvin Manusig

• This painting, "What a Beautiful Disaster," is a powerful image. A woman, draped in the colors of a flag, holds dark dust – representing destruction, perhaps. But her face is serene, almost hopeful. This contrast between the devastation she holds and her calm expression is deeply moving. It makes me think about the resilience of the human spirit, our ability to find beauty even amidst terrible events. The artist's skill in capturing this complex emotion is breathtaking. It's a reminder that even in the face of disaster, there's still hope and a strange kind of beauty to be found. It stays with you, this feeling of quiet strength and enduring hope.

𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐍 𝐂𝐈𝐓𝐘. The "Open City" hanging sign is a powerful symbol of Manila's resilience. The city's history, struggles, and triumphs. The sign, with its simplicity yet profound message, speaks volumes about the city's spirit. Indeed, a silver lining and a testament to the city's ability to overcome adversity. As a Manileño, I see this sign as a representation of our city's character. It's a symbol of our warmth, our hospitality, and our unwavering hope. Despite the challenges we face, we will always find a way to rise above. The "Open City" sign is more than just a piece of cloth; it's a piece of our soul. It's a part of our identity, a part of what makes us Manileños. It's a sign rather that we are a city of dreams, a city of possibilities.

𝐋𝐀𝐏𝐔 𝐋𝐀𝐏𝐔. Lapu-Lapu is a name that remains through a glimpse of Philippine history. He is a mark of bravery that can sacrifice oneself for the country and a true Filipino hero. His fearlessness in resisting colonization ignited a spark of patriotism in the hearts of Filipinos, inspiring generations to come. As a Filipino, I've always looked up to Lapu-Lapu. His determination and love for his homeland have always resonated with me. It's an honor to portray him in one of our activities, to embody his essence, and to share his story to inspire others, just as how he has inspired me. Lapu-Lapu's legacy brings the strength of the Filipino core. That even the smallest of nations can stand up to the mightiest of empires that also freedom is worth fighting for, and that courage can overcome any obstacle. As I continue to look more deeply at this painting of Lapu-Lapu, I am filled with a sense of pride and gratitude. I must say, I am proud to be a Filipino, and I am grateful for the sacrifices of heroes like him. His memory will forever be etched in our hearts, and the greatness that lies within us all.

𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄 𝐈𝐍 𝐀 𝐂𝐎𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐋. The breaking wood and simple construction of this house tell a story of stability and the lasting power of family. For me, it's a reminder that a home isn't just a building; it's the love and warmth that fills it. Despite its humble appearance, this house might weathered storms, both literal and figurative, but continues to stand still. It's a place where rememberings are made, where laughter echoes, and the love flourishes. This house is a symbol of the Filipino people's ability to adapt and overcome. Even in the face of adversity, we find ways to create a home, a place of belonging. Like what I experienced when I was young, this house holds a special place in my heart as this is literally what our house looks like. It's a memory of ours in our imperfect times, a time when for me family was just everything. True happiness isn't found in material possessions but in the bonds of love and the joy of shared experiences that truly build a home. Let this craftsmanship serve as an inspiration, that home is where the heart is, no matter what the circumstances are.

"Every Color III (ALAB NG PUSO)"

"Shroud of Sorrow"

"Stop the Violence"

"Every Color (Alab ng Puso)" captivates my attention because it speaks to something deep within us. It’s not just the vibrant colors or the dynamic composition, but the way it mirrors universal emotions and experiences. The fiery reds and oranges instantly draw the eye, evoking energy, passion, and life. As you look closer, the blend of contrasting hues calm blues, earthy greens, and shimmering golds creates a sense of harmony that feels both powerful and soothing. The interplay between chaos and order in the composition makes you pause and reflect. It’s a celebration of contrasts its intensity and calmness, individuality and togetherness. It’s captivating because it’s more than just art on a canvas; it’s an emotional journey that resonates with everyone in a unique, personal way.

"Shroud of Shoulder" captivates my attention because it feels personal. It invites us to step closer, to think and feel, and to discover our own connection to the story it tells without words. It’s not just a painting but also it’s an invitation to reflect on the beauty and mystery of being human. This painting speaks to everyone differently. For some, it might symbolize the weight of life’s burdens; for others, it might represent a quiet strength or a sense of peace. The shroud becomes a metaphor for protection, concealment, or even transformation.

What makes "Stop the Violence" captivating is its emotional power. It doesn’t just ask us to look at it, it demands that you feel something. It stirs anger, sadness, and empathy all at once. The painting reminds us that violence is not just an act, it’s a cycle, one we must work together to break.Through the artwork, the message is clear: violence doesn’t just harm individuals, it affects entire communities. But amid the pain, there is hope a belief that by coming together and raising our voices, we can create a world where peace prevails. This painting is not just art, it’s a call to action, asking each of us to play a part in ending violence and building a safer, kinder future.

I’ve always been captivated by them, and it's reflected in many things I own, from my phone case and wallpaper to other items around me. When I saw this piece, it evoked a deep sense of freedom, like a butterfly soaring, embarking on a journey, evolving, and discovering itself. It reminded me of my own desire for freedom and personal growth.

👭 - "Kanlungan" by BJMP Manila City Jail

Female Dormitory

Seeing this canvas painting made me think of my mom, the person I admire most and look up to. It suddenly occurred to me that perhaps the reason the painting was created is because the artist misses their child or mother. Being separated from each other can be an incredibly challenging experience, something I truly understand, as my mom works abroad, and being away from her is never easy.

☀️ - "Sunset Bird" by Jonard

I really like this painting for two reasons. First, the sunset. I’m a huge fan of both sunrises and sunsets because I feel a personal connection to them, given that my name is Sunshine. I love how they light up the world and bring a sense of joy and warmth. Second, the bird. To me, it symbolizes freedom and peace. There’s something incredibly soothing about looking up to nature when you’re tired—it's like an unpaid therapy that restores your spirit.

MORTAL ENEMY

This artwork is the first art piece that captured my attention right after setting foot on the second floor of the museum. The art shows two people using a lighter to a thing that is connected to each other’s head implying how an action of one can influence another’s thinking. Many individuals do things without thinking about the impact of it on other people. For instance is what is currently happening right now on our society which is wishing for a typhoon to occur in order for school classes to be canceled and suspended without thinking of the impact on homeless people and other lives This artwork raises awareness and promotes critical thinking making me remember it by heart.

SANTO NIÑO "ASSERTIONISM EPILOGUE EXHIBIT"

This art piece got me thinking about why did or what is the reason of the artist to produce this art, which definitely captured my mind and my time staring at it for a long time. I wonder if it shows a fully clothed woman earning more respect than the other women who only wore panties and were almost naked, which is the reason why the man gave the Santo Nino to the only woman who had full clothes on. Or if the painting tells a story about adultery. Things that make me overthink are what I grow fond of and this painting is one of them.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DISASTER

The title of this artwork got me hooked from the time I read it. The painting consists of a woman and colors from the Philippines flag. The woman possesses a halo on her head with three yellow stars and a belo with two colors, blue on the left and red on the right side, portraying the Philippine Flag in time of peace vertically. However, inside the belo of the woman is her hair with the color red on the left and blue on the right side implying the Philippine Flag in time of war vertically. The art piece depicts a woman who is pure and good on the outside but a disaster on the inside. In addition, the woman was wearing a pearl necklace symbolizing the lyrics from the Philippine national anthem "perlas ng silanganan," pertaining to Filipino people. The painting shows that Filipino kindness is not something to mess with as it can be a disaster once it reaches its limit. This painting is just a chef's kiss and is my favorite painting that I have seen inside the Manila Clock Tower Museum.

Most of us rush through the process of life, and we often forget that the process is the most important path if we want to achieve something. In this regard, we need to appreciate the process because this is where we can see different versions of ourselves. We will see that we achieve something in our lives that we often don't notice anymore.

🎨: Daddy's Girl by Dan Henry Canalita

• This artwork for me is a piece of art that I can appreciate if I will read the background story of the painter. When you look at it for the first time, you won't like it because when you see it, it looks a bit messy. But, because of a father who is an inmate that shows love and protection to his son, you'll see that this art has a deep meaning. The red hand symbolizes love, and the blue hand symbolizes protection. It just shows that even though the father is in prison, he continues to inspire his son and shows love and protection through art.

🎨: No Poverty II by Dino Blanco

• It raises awareness among everyone that no one should be hungry, struggling, and sleeping at night wondering where to get food the next day. This artwork screams a lot of meaning like the need of helping the people who is really in need and we need to focus to the people because we are the one who really need the benefit instead of the people that getting it easily and not deserving.

The three artworks that capture my heart and mind at the Manila Clock Tower Museum in Ermita, Manila, are:

“Tagpi-Tagping Pangarap” by R2 Tolentino

This painting was the first that caught my attention, and when I saw the name, it captured my heart and mind as well. It is a painting composed of patches that represent various Filipino people, including indigenous Filipino tribes, Filipino laborers who serve the country, and jeans patches of clothing, which I believe reflect ordinary Filipinos and modern society. I think this painting depicts how, despite our differences in jobs, lifestyles, and perspectives in life, we all strive for the same goal: to achieve our ambitions, which unifies us. It marks us as a true Filipino society. This is one of the most wholesome paintings I've ever seen, and the powerful message behind it only adds to its beauty.

“Sana Sa Makalawa (Hope, The Day After Tomorrow)” by R2 Tolentino

This is the first painting I saw at the museum. Personally, I found it fascinating to look at because it is a three-dimensional artwork with an incredible array of textures. I think this artwork portrays our country striving for its survival in the midst of waves of hatred, negativity, or horrible events in general that strongly foster and grow in our country, making it impossible to fly high. The colorful part of the painting additionally shows what our country might look like if it were not fostered and surrounded by terrible things. From my point of view, this artwork signifies hope for our country. That there is hope for the day after tomorrow, and that things will hopefully be better by then.

“What A Beautiful Disaster” by Arvin Manusig

Personally, I believe that this painting's central idea is highly relevant in our country now. To me, it represents our mother earth being tormented while holding a part of herself that has been wrecked by environmental problems such as pollution, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. We are so self-centered and focused on making our country attractive, aesthetically pleasing, and to our liking that we sometimes disregard that it is not ours and that we are endangering Mother Nature. And so, with this image being so relevant and current in our country today, I think it is the perfect portrayal of our mother nature, a beautiful disaster.

Standing Tall I by David Requilme - I found this piece striking to a great degree. The brushwork created a sense of motion, a moving artwork. The person— with their head as the clock tower, a bird on their hand, and their garb that seems like circles in motion, evokes as though like the wind, free and alive; the clock having all its time, the bird free of a cage, and the dress resonating with the wind. The colors give their way as well, as if they work in harmony— shades of gold, brown, green, and the use of white. This artwork notably expresses liberty, and is why it is striking to me.

Every Color I by Norman Francis & Juban Blanco - I was drawn to this piece because it expressed so much emotions, and I felt them. The color palette has such a strong sense of depth on its own, like sentiments of possibilities, all alive, like an explosion of hope and yearning, which I find captivating.

Sana sa Makalawa (Hope, the day after tomorrow) by Rene Tolentino - This artwork seemed like a portrayal of Filipinos’ resilience to me. It depicts realities— the Philippine flag swaying along with the waves of a vast ocean, like the Filipinos surrounded by wide and difficult circumstances, but are still swimming in persistency. I mostly love the colored part of the piece, a part of the ocean and the whole of the Philippine flag. It conveyed hope, that despite the extent of dullness and sorrow, a wave of hope and a sway of ambition will always be there.

As we explored the Manila Clock Tower Museum, three (3) remarkable artworks captured my heart and mind, each resonating deeply with my personal reflections and emotions.

1. “Wall of Heroes”

- As I walked into the first floor of the Manila Clock Tower Museum, I was immediately struck by the weight of history surrounding me. However, the “Wall of Heroes,” featuring portraits of those who fought bravely during the Battle of Manila, is the first piece that truly captured my heart and mind. Standing before it, surrounded by the words “Open City” written in a white flag and other historical pieces, felt like stepping into the past—a moment frozen in time. Seeing those photos of courageous individuals in the middle of the staircase made me pause and reflect. The photographs of those heroes, displayed in such a solemn and striking way, made me think about the lives they lived, the sacrifices they made, and the struggles they endured to fight for the freedom that we have today. The crumbling walls surrounding it reminded me of how fragile life and freedom are, but the images of those brave individuals brought a sense of permanence and strength. It was humbling to realize that their courage shaped the world I live in today. It truly humbled me and made me reflect on my own purpose. Seeing their faces reminded me that every challenge I face is nothing compared to the bravery and resilience they showed. It inspired me not just to live a life that honors their legacy, but also to make my own contribution to the future, no matter how small.

2. “Sana sa Makalawa (Hope, The Day After Tomorrow)” by R2 Tolentino

- When I first laid my eyes on “Sana sa Makalawa” by R2 Tolentino, I immediately felt a deep connection to its powerful symbolism. The image of a flag standing tall amidst stormy waves represents resilience—something both the Filipino spirit and every person facing challenges can relate to. The flag’s strength in the face of adversity reminded me of my own struggles, and how, even when things feel overwhelming, I must keep moving forward. The title of the painting, “Hope, the Day After Tomorrow,” is a powerful reminder that, no matter how hard today may be, the future holds the possibility of something better. It encourages me to keep fighting, to hold on to hope, and to stay strong not just for myself, but for those who depend on me. The flag teaches me that, like it, I must keep rising above life’s storms, no matter how tough the journey gets, because hope and strength are always worth holding on to.

3. “Life Stages” by Marko Bello

- When I first saw “Life Stages”, it struck me deeply because it captured how life’s struggles, no matter their size, can sometimes feel overwhelming. This painting captures something that I know all too well. The red strokes covering the face represent the challenges we all face—the moments when the weight of life, whether big or small, making us lose sight of who we are. It made me reflect on the times I’ve felt lost or uncertain, questioning my choices and wondering if I’m on the right path. The figure’s pose, hunched and deep in thought, reminded me of those moments of doubt. But what truly spoke to me was the light breaking through the chaos. Despite the struggles that cloud the figure, there’s a sense of hope shining through, showing that no matter how difficult things get, there’s always a way forward. It reminded me that life isn’t just a series of peaks and valleys, but a constant balance of both, and it’s through facing both the small and large struggles that we grow. Even in our toughest moments, there’s always hope and light guiding us through, helping us become stronger and more resilient in the end.

These three pieces resonate deeply with me because they reflect the challenges I face in my own life—whether it’s honoring the sacrifices of others, finding hope in difficult moments, or pushing through times of doubt—and they remind me that resilience, courage, and hope are what will carry me forward, just as they have for those before me.

At first, I didn't see immediately what the artwork contained because it was placed on the wall with many frames, but when I went near the wall, I noticed that it had different people, and that's when I realized that it was a wall with a portrait of heroes that fight for our country's freedom. Each portrait seemed to tell a story of bravery and sacrifice. Standing in front of it, I felt proud and thankful for these people who gave everything for our country. What I really appreciate about this portrait is how it keeps the memory of these heroes alive and inspires us to value their sacrifices. It’s a beautiful and meaningful way to honor those people who truly deserve to be called heroes.

🖼️ "Honey" by Ron Ron Del Carmen || Acrylic on Canvas || 18 x 24

As a person who loves art, I really appreciate this modern painting because, even though I'm far from it, I still noticed it quickly because of its vibrant colors and how the texture shows through the painting. I'm really amazed at how it is made because it looks so realistic and beautiful; even though it is a typical painting, it still shows how talented the artist is.

🖼️ "Redemption Cross" by Patrick Naval || Stainless, Reclaimed || 14" × 20" × 3" || 2024

This artwork captured my heart because of how unique it is. The cross is made from stainless steel. That's what makes it unique because, typically, a cross is made out of wood. As a Catholic, it really captured my heart because this artwork symbolized the sacrifice of Jesus, who died to redeem humankind from sin; it shows hope, healing, and love. The use of reclaimed or recycled stainless steel adds another layer of meaning, showing transformation, renewal, and the restoration of brokenness into something beautiful and purposeful, echoing the message of redemption itself.

Overall, every piece of art in the Manila Clock Tower is beautiful and unique in its own way, showing the incredible talent and creativity of the artists. However, these three artworks stood out to me the most, capturing both my heart and mind. They left a lasting impression on me, not just because of their beauty, but also because of the stories and emotions they conveyed. These pieces remind me of how art has the power to inspire, to make us reflect, and to connect us to something deeper. Truly, visiting this museum was a meaningful experience that I will always treasure.

These are the arts that took my attention. Although I wasn’t able to remember their names, there are common features in these art works that really took my interest. These are the innocence that showed through the pictures, the culture that somehow represented the Philippines, the art style used by their artists, and a story that made every pieces unique.

INNOCENCE

To define innocence is subjective. But to me, it’s the purity of the subject and simpleness of the art that made it look innocent. In the first photo, the simple joy of the child playing made the art seem pure and light. Even without much elements the art was able to highlight the innocence of the child through his smile. In the second picture, I was able to get a sense of innocence through the movement of the subjects. The calmness and somehow simple way of living made it seem like their environment is peaceful and quiet. Lastly, the third picture depicted innocence through the colors and symbols such as the bird in the painting. The subject was moving freely and without being cautious making the whole art seem innocent.

CULTURE

The Philippine culture was very clear to see among the art works. The traditions, ways of living, and even the symbolisms commonly used in the country. With those in mind, it was a lot easier to connect to the art given that it has something in common with the audience. In the first picture, the photo shows how Filipinos could find happiness in the simplest things. It shows how we’re able to stay positive despite the troubles we are facing. On the second picture, the culture of christianity is being depicted. It also shows the “pagkakaisa” and “sambayanihan” which showcases the unity of the country. Lastly the painting called “Standing tall II” shows resilience, bravery, and pride of Filipinos that leads us to keep standing tall no matter what we’re going through.

ART STYLE

Each art work presented different art styles in which the artists were able to utilize effectively. The use of colors, the positioning of the subjects, and the medium they used to portray their stories were well thought of.

STORY

The stories of each art truly made them unique as pieces. Even when some of them are paired with other art works they were still able to present a whole story on their own. The first picture depicted how we can find genuine happiness even in the simplest things in life. It shows how we should enjoy life as like the innocence of youth, it’s not something we can take back once gone. In the second painting it shows how peace can be maintained if everyone cooperates. In the last picture, I was able to see resilience and peace.

1st Artwork

The vibrant red in this piece immediately caught my attention, radiating a sense of passion and intensity. The contrast between the deep black and the fiery red evokes emotions of strength and empowerment. It feels almost like a dance of fire and shadows, making it unforgettable. The artwork’s boldness inspires me to embrace vibrant energy in life.

2nd Artwork

This piece stood out because of its unique creativity—a light bulb used as a head and intricate patterns and colors adorning the body. The juxtaposition of simplicity and complexity is fascinating. It feels like a representation of how ideas and imagination can illuminate the most ordinary forms, making them extraordinary. It’s a reminder of the power of innovation and art to challenge norms.

3rd Artwork: Inang Perlas by Anita Del Rosario

This sculpture brought me back to the beaches of my hometown, Romblon. The elegance of the shells, paired with the flowy brass design, mirrors the graceful dance of waves by the shore. The intricate details and natural elements reflect the beauty of nature and craftsmanship. It feels personal, almost like a homage to the serenity and artistry of coastal life.

DADDY’S GIRL

by Dan Henry Canalita

This acrylic painting stood out to me as the most unforgettable piece in the entire museum. The description highlights how “light and shadows evoke warmth and tenderness,” portraying a timeless bond between a parent and child. As someone who has yearned for a father’s affection through the ups and downs of life, this artwork sparks my curiosity about the artist’s story. I wonder if their relationship mirrors mine or if it was much stronger than what I experienced with my father. This painting resonates with me because it prompts reflection on the diverse connections people have with their parents.

STRING OF HEARTS I

by Anna De Leon

This painting drew my attention specifically because the string appeared so lifelike that I had to examine it several times to confirm it was painted. It also made me reflect on the dragonfly’s small size compared to the rocks, symbolizing the challenges it faces in seeking love. This reminded me that love is a journey filled with difficulties, and even if you feel small and fragile, you must be courageous and resilient. Although the path to love can be hard, reaching the end and finding love makes all the struggles worthwhile.

KRISTOCOPE WORLD

by Jao Mapa

This painting prompted deep reflection on life for me. While I’ve watched many films about the Bible, I never questioned their authenticity until now. It raised fears I had about exploring these thoughts. However, this artwork revealed the reality behind those films I’ve seen. It highlighted the presence of cameras, directors, actors, and crew. The artist explored the layers behind the emotional impact of these films, especially the portrayal of Jesus, which resonates with our feelings of pain and empathy.

Portrait Series on Cultural Identity:

As I stand in front of this series of portraits, I feel an overwhelming sense of admiration and curiosity. Each figure, adorned in intricate traditional attire, seems to tell a unique story. The vibrant colors and patterns remind me of the richness and diversity of cultural heritage, sparking a connection within me. The thoughtful expressions on their faces draw me in, as though they’re inviting me to learn more about their lives and traditions. It captures my heart because it’s not just art it’s a celebration of identity, history, and the beauty of human diversity. I can’t help but feel inspired by how this collection transforms cultural pride into something visually stunning and emotionally moving.

Tower of Miniature Homes:

When I first saw this towering sculpture of colorful miniature houses, I felt an unexpected wave of nostalgia and wonder. Each tiny home, with its bright colors and unique design, feels like a glimpse into a small, vibrant world. The way they’re stacked so precariously yet harmoniously reflects the realities of urban living chaotic yet full of life. It captures my heart because it reminds me of how communities thrive despite challenges, and it inspires me to appreciate the resilience and creativity that shape our environments. This piece feels alive, almost like it’s telling a thousand stories at once, and I’m captivated by its playful yet profound message.

Depiction of Human Struggle and Resilience:

As I stood before these paintings, I felt an emotional pull I couldn’t ignore. The rawness in the expressions of the subjects struck a deep chord within me. Each brushstroke, each line on their faces, tells a story of hardship, resilience, and the quiet strength of the human spirit. The choice of colors bold yellows and purples contrasts with the somber reality of the emotions depicted, making the scenes even more poignant.

What captures my heart is how the paintings seem to reflect both vulnerability and defiance. They remind me of the untold stories of ordinary people whose struggles often go unnoticed. These works don’t just appeal to my eyes; they touch my soul, evoking a deep sense of empathy and admiration for the resilience of humanity.
