My Spring Break

My spring break started off great. I had a swim meet at Rubidoux high school on the first day of break. We had to wake up really early because the bus left at 5:30 A.M. Even though everyone was tired, the bus ride there was really fun. We got to watch the sunrise and also a lot of the swimmers took a nap on the ride. When we arrived at Rubidoux we greeted all the schools. Lancaster was another Antelope Valley school that was there. Before the meet started a DJ set up and played music. It was really fun to watch as swimmers from all the different schools ran to the stage and started dancing. The races were really fun to swim and watch because they were all relays. Everyone was full of excitement racing and cheering. I enjoyed the bus ride back even more than the first one. We stopped to get food and it was really entertaining watching the whole team pile into one food place. We played music the way back and everyone sang along. The swim meet was a great way to start off my break.

My Favorite Poem - Mirror by Sylvia Plath - 1961

I enjoyed this poem because I think it perfectly resembles self-reflection. I think it was interesting how it was from the mirrors point of view.

I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, only truthful‚
The eye of a little god, four-cornered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.
It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long
I think it is part of my heart. But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.

Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me,
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her back, and reflect it faithfully.
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.
I am important to her. She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.

I really liked the use of literary terms in this poem. Plath uses personification, theme, a certain tone, and a unique point of view. She personifies the mirror and creates the story around its point of view. The mirror describes itself and what it sees everyday. The entire theme of the poem is self-reflection. The woman in the poem looks in the mirror everyday, searching for who she truly is. Everyday, all she finds is an increasingly older woman. The mirror only reflects her exact image.

I would not admit that anything could interfere with the union of two people who love each other. Love that alters with changing circumstances is not love, nor if it bends from its firm state when someone tries to destroy it. Oh no, it’s an eternally fixed point that watches storms but is never itself shaken by them. It is the star by which every lost ship can be guided: one can calculate it’s distance but not gauge its quality. Love doesn’t depend on Time, although the rosy lips and cheeks of youth eventually come within the compass of Time’s sickle. Love doesn’t alter as the days and weeks go by but endures until death. If I’m wrong about this then I’ve never written anything and no man has ever loved.

The Danger of a Single Story

This Ted Talk is about the idea behind single stories and how they can mislead from true stories. A small single story can have the power to create stereotypes around groups of people. This includes race, ethnicity, community, etc. The quote, "History is written by the winners." is emphasizing that the stories we hear aren't all of history. The stories we hear are the single stories that were recorded. I believe this quote is implying that there is two sides to every story. Stories are an important part of our history, but we shouldn't only accept the ones that are recorded. We need to be open-minded that there are most likely other stories that we just haven't heard yet. That is why it's important to reject the single story.
