In the United Kingdom, media and advertising increasingly promote diversity in age, body type, and "real" beauty, often showing unretouched images.

In the United States, advertising balances traditional ideals of thinness, youth, etc., with a strong push for diversity and inclusion. There is a strong trend toward body positivity and "authenticity," but this coexists with the pervasive influence of social media filters and cosmetic retouching. Beauty is often linked to a high level of consumption and a highly aesthetic lifestyle, such as the fads of blonde hair, surgery, makeup, and the like.

Both the United Kingdom and the United States are seeking more diverse representation, but the United States tends to lead a large scale of this shift, driven by a diverse consumer base. The United Kingdom focuses more explicitly on "real" beauty, meaning they seek natural looks in people, and has more proactive advertising regulations. While both countries are heavily influenced by social media, the United States tends to set global trends that impact the United Kingdom.
