In scene five, Sister Aloysius states to Father Flynn "You yourself singled the boy out for special attention. You held a private meeting with him at the rectory. A week ago?" Sister Aloysius is stating that there was an opportunity for the priest to be alone with the boy. This is cause for concern because the boy came back acting differently. Sister James states, No. It was his expression. He looked frightened and...he put his head on the desk in the most peculiar way. An one other thing. I think there was alcohol on his breath. There was alcohol on his breath.(Shanely, 22) By providing both of these statements, it addresses the fundamental fact that Father Flynn had Donald alone in the rectory and that immediately after, Donald was acting strange and his breath smelled like alcohol.

Journal Article connecting Sister Aloysius

A recent journal article paints the picture of priest who perform these crude acts and what happens as a result to their parish members. "After such a profound betrayal, people are openly wondering whether the Church of 5t Peter as an institution is finished, with members drifting away to other churches and even to atheism." (Wambu, 1)This church will see a slow decline in members and other individuals will begin to leave the nearby area as well. Sister Aloysius felt that same pressure to stand up and say something. If she doesn't speak out against this priest, there is fear that the community members will not support her school or St. Nicholas any further.

A nun from a school district in St. Louis has pointed out that there should be stricter rules or staff that are charged with taking care of children. “I'd hope that everyone is learning a lot from the current situation, and that background checks would extend to everyone who has the responsibility for the safety of our children,” Sister McPhee said. “Anything less than that wouldn't be right.” She feels that priests and even nuns should be background checked to make sure they are allowed to work in the school system.
