The melody of the Seven Steps is traced by a German song entitled Sieben schitte (also called Siebenschritt), which is a traditional Polka.
In truth the melody coincides only for the first 4 bars with the German one. This musical theme then spread to the Polesine area (which more or less coincides with the province of Rovigo) as an accompaniment to a traditional couple dance.
