Kongjwi is a young girl who lived in Dusan, her mother passed away at a young age leading to new members of her family which were her stepsister named Patjwi and her stepmother. Patjwi and her stepmother horribly mistreated Kongjwi making her do labor for hours at a time. The mayor of the town invited all civilians to a ball; however, the stepmother forbids her from going until she finished a long list of chores. As she was attempting to complete this long list of chores, animals came to assist her and while they assisted her, they also provided her with a dress to go to the ball in. She goes to the ball and stuns everyone there with her beauty, when the prince sees her, he falls in love instantly. Due to seeing her stepmother and sister she abruptly leaves in fear of them seeing her leaving a shoe behind. When the sister learns it is Kongjwi she drowns her in the river then impersonates her and lives with the prince. The prince later has a dream in which Kongjwi comes to him and tells him she is an imposter, and she is dead in the river. He goes to the river to find her and brings her back to life with a kiss and they live happily ever after.

Konjwi and Cinderella although they are different stories they still have key similarities. Konjwi and Cinderella both lost their mother at a young age and their fathers brought toxic stepfamily into their lives. They both receive magical dresses and receive a pair of glass slippers and loose one of them whilst running away. The prince tries to find who she is in both stories by whose foot fits in the shoe. In the end they both have a happily ever after.

The differences between are small however still change the stories to make them their own. In Cinderella there is a evil stepmom and 2 evil stepsisters however in Kongjwi and Patjwi there is only one evil stepsister. In the original story the bird, tree and her mother are the characters that support her and give her the magical dress. In Kongjwi and Patjwi the supporting characters was the animals she came across while doing labor. In Cinderella the prince goes to Cinderella's sisters, and they mutilate their feet to try and convince the prince that their feet fit. In the Korean version the stepsister drowns Kongjwi and marries the prince for herself, the prince finds out she isn't the sister and brings the sister back to life and marries her. The ending of Cinderella the evil stepmom is made to dance in hot shoes until she dies however the destiny of the stepmother in Kongjwi and Patjwi

Reflections of Culture

Although Cinderella and Kongjwui & Patjwi have the same blueprints, the cultural differences is one thing that make this story different from Cinderella. One of the first main noticeable differences is the names of both characters. The protagonists name being Kongjwi means "wise" and "kind" of heart, however the antagonist evil stepsisters name Patjwi means "snake". The setting of this fairy tale is also significant because the ball in which the prince falls in love with Kongjwi is during New Year's which is a very important holiday for Asian cultures. Lastly, While Kongjwi is running away she loses her slipper in the Duwol stream which acts as a sewage system in Korea.

Overall, this story was made to show that good always prevails over evil and it is always better to be truthful. Patjwi treats her stepsister horrible throughout the story and proves how mean hearted she is during multiple instances. Patjwi drowns her sister in jealously for her triumphs and tries to take all of her fortunes for herself. In the end Kongjwi is back to life and living her dream displaying good always winning over evil.
