The readers are finally shown that the lottery is an awful event when Mrs. Hutchinson is the one picked out of all the Hutchinsons and the townspeople begin to throw rocks at her. 2. Mr. Summers is insensitive because in the story he volunteers to run the lottery every time which makes readers believe that the horrific award does not bother him. Also at the end of the story when Mrs. Hutchinson is about to be stoned, he nonchalantly encourages the townspeople finish stoning her fast so that they can go back to work.
