"No one person or perspective can give us the answers we need to the problems of today.Paradoxically, we can only find those answers by admitting we don’t know. We have to be willing to let go of our certainty and expect ourselves to be confused for a time."

This quote has initiated my thinking process because it is really important to think what would happen when you let go of your comforts and regularities in order to further your knowledge and be open to new perspectives and ideas. It is interesting to think about how it would feel to be in a learning situation where you are unfamiliar with what is being taught and that feeling of distress and uncomfort until you gain and understanding of those new ideas.

Wheatley writes about the idea that we are taught to think and feel a certain way about our learning and we don't take time to listen to those opinions that differ from our own. What would happen if we took the time to think about the other points of view and why a person may think or feel a certain way? Why do we have the opinions that we have?

Thinking about how diverse society is and how important it is to have a society that has so many differences is an interesting idea. What does it truly mean to have a society that has no two people who are the same? How are our lives affected by the differences in our community? We can benefit from learning from each other because we are so different. Someone you may not even know could have life changing ideas or answers to questions you never could have answered yourself.

Society is filled with different people so that we can learn from each other and gain new ideas we may have never thought of ourselves. Because we do not have the same life experiences as any other person, we are also unable to see life the way someone else may interpret it. It is important to let go of what we know and what we already think and feel so that we are open to new opinions, views, beliefs and ideas. We can learn so much from the people that live around us. Without exploring these ideas we may never truly understand why people are so different and why they think differently than we do.

There are situations in life where you may never know what you believe because you have never thought of some things. When you listen to what someone elses is proposing, you may feel shock or surprise depending on what is being said. If you feel a certain way to what someone is saying you are having beliefs and opinions about it whether or not you are aware of it.

"It’s not differences that divide us. It’s our judgments about each other that do; curiosity and good listening bring us back together."

The only reason we are afraid of the differences in our society is because we have not come to terms with our own identity and beliefs. We rely on comfort and certainty to the point that we do not allow ourselves to venture towards new ideas and beliefs. Our world is so big and so intimidating that we tend to rely closely to what we already know and hide from the unknown.
