A child that is well above normal weight and or healthy weight when it comes to his/her weight and age becomes childhood obesity. This becomes an issue when you are consuming high calorie, low nutrient foods and drinks. Also, if you are not maintaining a healthy diet and getting involved in physical activities. Childhood obesity can cause high blood pressure, joint problems, breathing problems, type 2 diabetes, and or glucose tolerance, etc. Also, it can affect you mentally, for example, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and or being bullied, etc. The environment around a child will most likely determine a child's eating choices.

Source:
Overweight & Obesity.

We can all agree that McDonald's is one of the top fast food places in America. Right? This food place consist of selling fast food that may not be healthy for one person, but their not all unhealthy. There are some meals or sides that are considered healthy, even at other fast food restaurants. Looking back at my charts, the healthier meal would be the kids meal because you have a better choice of food, whereas for the adult meal you already have so much salt and grease in the burger itself. Nutrition plays a big role in a child's life because the diet that they choose can either affect them in a positive or negative way. Its our teachers and parents who make the decision on what children should eat. In the book, it states "Teachers and parents play an important role in shaping the health of young children...teachers must be able to recognize aspects of the changing food environment that challenge children's diets and learn about ways to to work with families and understand optimal nutrition." This just explains that we need to make sure that we are monitoring what our children and students eat so that it doesn't affect their school performance.

Source:
Sorte, J., Daeschel, I., & Amador, C.

According to the CACFP, when serving meals and or snacks, it is standard procedure to include a wide variety of veggies, fruits, more whole grain items, and less foods with saturated fats/added sugar. In the book it explains that for a snack fresh fruits and veggies should be offered over 100% fruit juice because fresh healthy foods have more of the nutrients and fibers that are needed to help children feel full longer. When preparing a menu, you need to: gather tools for menu planning, prepare to write they cycle menu, create a budget for menus, and build the menu. It is important that you follow Sample Menu Evaluation Checklist, which should be provided in your facility.

Source:
Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). (n.d.).

My thoughts on this article are not positive. I must say that it honestly makes me sad because it explained in the article that these risk factors start at at the age of two all the way up to young adulthood. Its just sad because parents don't really think about this stuff until it actually affects them or their child. The PDAY studies showed that people, children 15-34 years old had passed away due to cardiovascular issues, which I think is really sad because their deaths were accidental. Their deaths were due to the increase of fatty streaks in their body. Although, this is a wake up to actually stop on top of having a healthy diet, it also makes you want to get more engaged in healthy diet research or actually start looking at the nutrition facts on our food.

Source:
Daniels, S.

As I stated before in Step 1, yes McDonalds is fast food and contains unhealthy food, but there are also, healthy choices. We just have to be willing to make a better eating choice and choose to eat right so we don't suffer later. This chart shows a better choice of food and nutrition facts for it. For the kids meal, the yogurt is 100% Vitamin C whereas on the other chart it was apple slices which had 0% Vitamin C. For the adult chart, it was quarter pounder burger that had a total of 530 calories whereas the salad had only 320 calories. So, we have to look at the facts before we order so we know exactly what we are putting into our body.
