Throughout his life, Hobbes believed that the only correct form of government is absolute monarchy. This belief came from the Hobbes' idea that humans are inherently selfish beings. Hobbes' belief that humans are selfish beings stemmed from the brutal English Civil War between the King and the Parliament that took the lives of 200,000 people.

In 1651 Hobbes published the Leviathan or the Matter Forme and Power of a Commonwealth Ecclesiastical and Civil. In the Leviathan Hobbes argued his strict beliefs of total monarchy. It is arguably the most definitive and persuasive writing ever made as to why one should always and only obey the government in order to avoid chaos.

Thomas Hobbes has had a major influence on the founding fathers and the declaration of Independence. However, it is not quite the positive influence. The Founding Fathers rejected all of Thomas Hobbes's ideas about absolute monarchy. They instead sided with his political enemy John Locke. Thomas Hobbes influenced the declaration of Independence in a way where the founding fathers made sure not to include any of his philosophies.

After rejecting Thomas Hobbes's ideas of absolute monarchy, the founding fathers embraced John Lock's philosophies of the protection of unalienable rights, and limited government in the Declaration of Independence and the constitution. Thomas Hobbes has had a direct influence in making our Founding Fathers completely abolish the idea of total monarchy in our declaration of Independence.
